I have hunted through old files in vain for the company that made the screen door pictured below. I have also written to MPBN for information on the company, a small one in mid-coast Maine. My quick Google did not turn up the company I was looking for, however, but there were some interesting hits.

The door below was made in "mahogany" (grade quality for rot resistance) and it mortise and tenon construction. It came with screens and storm glass. I painted it myself. It's in the neighborhood of 10 yrs. old and its quality construction has allowed it to function perfectly all year 'round. I recall the company did a lot of special order work, as well.

Hey newhomebuilder...great links! Chelone, love your green door.....so pretty. Thank you both so much! I was in hopes some of you Southerners and Yankees could provide pics. I have seen beautiful screendoors in the Hamptons, mansions along the Gold Coast, and surely on beautiful old homes ( or new!)in the south. Hmmm, wonder if there's one in the movie Somethings Gotta Give? Do appreciate the nice replies and will hope someone else will see this and have a real home pic.

Leahcate, we live in the deep south and I can't think of a single "new build" where screen doors have been used. Most people around here run the a/c, even during those few weeks a year of pleasant weather. They also build decks instead of screened porches. Doesn't make sense to me. But each to his own.

I wonder if it's possible to get a screen door that looks like wood, but isn't. I ask because we've got 3 wooden screen doors on this house, and all summer long it's an adventure. It rains - the door swells and sticks. It gets humid - the door swells and sticks. It gets dry, the door shrinks and binds. I'd say at least twice a year, we've get out the power sander and are planing down the screen doors. I always prime and paint right after planing and as far as I know, the doors are painted on all surfaces, so theoretically moisture shouldn't be having this much effect on the doors....but it does. Oh, and at least once a year on our most used door, the screen molding works it's way loose and has to be renailed. I love the look though of the wood screen doors (and that oh-so-satisfying bang when they slam shut) so I'm willing to put up with it for now, but if they ever wear out, I'm going to look for some kind of wood-like-but-not-quite-wood replacement because these things have been a royal pain.

1) Coppa Woodworking has some STUNNING screen doors. Get a towel to mop up the drool before checking out their site. :-)

2) Screen doors can be custom built from cellular PVC boards to avoid the swelling/shrinking/warping issue. Azek is one brand of this material. It saws, screws, drills, and paints like real wood, but does not rot, warp, or split.

I too love that comforting "sproing" and "bang" of an old-fashioned screen door - it just says summer to me. The hiss and clank of a metal screen door just isn't the same at all. My grandmother lived on a small island off the coast of Maine and when I think of the sound of a wooden screen door I remember the smell of seaweed in the sunshine and the screeching gulls. Our back door IS going to have a proper screen door within the next couple of years!

On the photo posted by newhomebuider there appears to be just a pull (with a little hook lock above). I think this would be great since it would be easy for my kids to open. But then how does the door shut properly without a latch? Are there certain hinges that are used with a plain pull?

There's a spring-loaded hinge that closes the door automatically when the door is released. Here are a couple of examples: plain, fancy, in-between. When I was a kid most people just used a long, skinny spring that was attached to the door at one end and to the jamb at the other with screw-hooks, which created that distinctively nostalgic "sproing" noise. It had to be replaced every few years because it stretched out, but that was a thirty-second job and the steel can be recycled.

We ordered our screen door hardware from Antique Hardware. Have the simple latch set (like in the banner pic) and the half surface hinges.

Chelone, I've had that screen door company in the back of my mind for years now, and just never could justify the cost and now I can't think of it for the life of me. Google didn't help. I hope they're not out of business, they had some awesome doors. I knew someday I'd bite the bullet and just get one, and this year might have been it as our home depot door had fallen apart.....just my luck.

Wow elenkao! Even if it's not yours and Chelone's I do believe it is mine! There are some really wonderful doors on here! So glad you remembered it. Now I must go look some more and then...shudder...check the prices. Even if do not see one on a house I do believe one of these would look very nice here on mine.
california dreamer....Here in Calif.:>) I ordered a Coppa screened door via my local lumber store. Felt better having a local source ( in case of problems) as was custom size. Believe it saved on shipping, too. It's on a side door and is not fancy, but just fine.

It's a different company from the one you linked, Elenkao.

The door in the pictures I posted was available in natural wood or primed. I bought the primed version and applied the final color myself (sucked painting the curly parts!).

Our's has the hinges that slow the return of the door and the latch mechanism is not dependent on turning a knob, there's a roller mechanism that clicks shut when the weight of the door returns to the jamb.

I don't like it! the dog and the cats learned how to push against the door to open it and "let themselves" out. That's fine during the day, but when we want them to remain indoors on a warm evening, it's not that great.

Next move to is mortise the door for a latch that is secure against industrious and intellient pets.
