Help with expansion joint?

Hi,

We're getting close to finishing our pool(owner build)and have the concrete guy coming Monday to pour the decks. We live in the northwest with cold winters and hot summers as well as expansive soils.

He and the guy helping us say they can just pour the concrete and it will shrink away from the coping then we can fill it with some type of expansion filler? deck o seal? My question is-is this the way you're suppose to do an expansion joint between coping and deck? I've been researching it and thought that some type of expansive material like foam needs to go in between then you use the seal filler on top. Where do you get this foam and can I substitute some other type of foam or anything else? Any other ideas? Please help, we're less than 2 days away from concrete. Thanks much?

the material we use is made by stegmeier, and its called poli-void.

You should be able to get this from any pool builder/supplier.

after the deck is poured you use a self leveling expansion joint caulk to fill the void left by the foam.

Pouring the concrete right into the coping is just plain stupid.

where are you at in the "nortwest"?

The polyfoam is a closed cell polyethelene foam backer rod. it available from any caulking or waterproofing supply. the self leveling caulk is available from the same source. Make sure it is UV resistant. Tell me where you live and I will suggest a source.

These control joints should not be effected by putting the polymeric sand in them. Their sole purpose is to create a weakened plane in the concrete to control the cracking. I have never seen the polymeric sand used in this manner. Maybe someone else will chime in. I would think silicone or some other crack sealant would be more appropriate. Have you checked whats available at the local home improvement store? Riles

For control joints to break up the expanse of a large slab pour, it's fine. But as the others wrote, for a pool deck-to-coping joint, A self-leveling caulk is the better option. I use Vulkem 45, a self-leveling polyurethane sealant.

i can tell by the palm tree that you're somewhere between South Carolina and Florida (or maye west coast, i.e. California) Assuming I'm correct to think that - I'd say you're going to be fine. You probably are not in a freeze-thaw area. I agree with the previous poster though - at least in my climate, I would definitely have an expansion joint Nice pool, btw!

Assuming that 18' is the run length, Red's (implied) question about burial depth is still relevant. In much of the country, expansion fittings are not necessary for relatively short direct-burial runs because the temperature 18" below ground (the usual minimum depth for burying conduit) is fairly constant. However, in very cold areas, it may be necessary to bury the conduit below the frost line. If you make the run above the frost line, you can get buckling in the conduit even with an expansion fitting. I'd imagine that the frost line is pretty darn deep in your area of Minnesota, no? As an aside, you might want to check with your AHJ to determine whether they'll require Schedule 80 conduit for the segment running from the meter pan to grade. I believe that this depends on whether your area interprets that part of the run as being subject to physical damage (crushing or impact) of the sort that requires Schedule 80. Thanks for the responses. I live in Wenatchee, WA about 2-3 hours from Seattle. I checked with pool supply stores here but they have to order and it would take over a week. I can't think of any caulking or waterproofing supply around here other than Lowes or Home Depot and I don't think they carry this(Deck-o-Foam, Poli-Void) however I will be checking today. Problem is nothing else is open today so I may have to reschedule the concrete. Would anything else work?

I am in Seattle, and could have it UPS'ed to you by Tuesday, The pool supply stores were just being lazy. To ship a roll of foam it would cost a whopping $15 from Kent, or Auburn.
