expansion joint question for builders

i understand how expansion joints work and how they help stop tiles from cracking... i was wondering if there is another way intergrated steps are poured. it seems like in the areas next to the steps, the coping is still directly attached to a pretty big chunk of concrete... is my pour fairly standard or would these areas normally be separated?

I try to have an expansion joint to help relieve stress, but I know several builders that shoot the steps with gunite without expansion joint on steps. They don't seem to have any more problems than I do. I would try and find out what standard practices are in your area.

i can tell by the palm tree that you're somewhere between South Carolina and Florida (or maye west coast, i.e. California)

Assuming I'm correct to think that - I'd say you're going to be fine. You probably are not in a freeze-thaw area.

I agree with the previous poster though - at least in my climate, I would definitely have an expansion joint

Your guy is right. Every 15 feet, ad if it's in direct sunlight or subject to extreme temperature change, that drops down to every 12 feet. As for what brand has the best matching caulk, I'd like to say Laticrete, but truth is all three of those would be good choices.

you need to adhere to their specs or the warrenty is voided. they go through much research and development to create those specifications to ensure against failure. any deviations from them, you can expect a failure. in short, its a roll of the dice. It may work out well for you, and it may fail. Personally, I would not want that liability, especially considering the top of the line cost of Forbo Products. It may be best for you to make another flooring selection if the isntallation requirements conflict with your aesthetic requirements.

You are going to have to be more specific about your retaining walls. Are you talking about a raised bond beam wall on the pool or what? Expansion joints are usually a matter of personal preference with your pool builder. I don't ever use the plastic type because sometimes they don't look too good after a year or 2 in the sun. We deep score the joints in the deck.

KristiR, It is a very sloppy job. Call them to clean up and fix it. It takes a little more effort to apply the seal to irregular surfaces, It's common to tape the edges of the joint.

thanks, yup... southern cali. i guess i wouldn't worry too much except that our old tile (this is a re-model) was cracked all the way around because there was never any expansion joint. i just didn't know if having one over 95% of the coping and then not having one for the 5% near the steps would be an issue...

btw, the old pool was 50 years old...
