I forgot to add that I found the pattern at the AZ Blankets 4 Kids website and the pattern is called "Patchwork Squares Quilt, Child to Teen".

Brad, congrats on the new hobby! I hope you enjoy making your first quilt. I know it's tough if you don't have local places to purchase fabric, but if you tell us where you are located there might be someone here that can help you find someplace within reasonable driving distance; there may be more fabric options than you know!

Thank you for welcoming me! I live in Central PA (Altoona, State College and Lewistown all within driving distance although Altoona is where I often go). There are Jo-Ann fabrics around and I think maybe at least one local place where I could find fabric. Does Michaels sell fabric? I also crochet too.

Thank you for the websites! I'll look at those too! I posted over on the fiber arts exchange forum to see if anyone had spare blocks. If I choose all rainbow colors, I'll need 10 blocks of each color for 70 squares. I have thread it's just material I need to get started.

Welcome to the forum, always glad to have new quilters. I usually use a natural or beige thread unless I'm using white or black fabric. White thread is a bit bright next to colored fabric to me.

Some Michaels still sell fabric, the ones near me do not. If you go to JoAnns be sure to print a coupon.

I sent you an e-mail, I have some fabric you are welcome to. It isn't in squares, but you are welcome to it.

Another place to look would be on ebay - just type in 'quilting fabric' and you will pull up a lot of sellers that are selling fabric pre-cut into different sized squares and the colors are coordinating. Welcome!

Brad, you didn't say how big you want the squares to be. With the dimensions you've given I guess you are looking for 6" squares? If you get fat quarters - those are the little pre-folded pieces of fabric you'll see stacked up in racks at Joann's or other fabric stores - you should be able to get 9 six inch squares from each one, if you cut carefully. The fat quarters are typically 18"x22". Or you can have the clerk cut 1/4th of a yard from a bolt and you can cut 7 six inch squares from that or get 3/8th of a yard so you'll be able to get 2 rows of 6" blocks.

Rainbow colors are a fun idea, but don't hesitate to mix in some prints, especially small prints that look like solid colors when you step away from them.

For brights and rainbow colors I would use gray or beige thread, like grammyp suggested. Those colors seem to disappear into the fabric; white and black are more noticeable. There are some great variegated threads that might be fun for you to use when you get to the quilting part.

Don't be discouraged because you haven't gotten many offers of free fabric. We tend to buy what we need and then save the small scraps for scrappy quilts or the monthly lotto blocks. Or for exchanges where everyone sends in material for sharing and gets different fabrics back. For the cost of shipping, if you were going to reimburse the sender for that, you can go to Joann's and purchase several fat quarters especially when they have their 99 cent sale. And you can use the Joann's coupon for one of the fat quarter bundles that include 5 or 10 fat quarters in coordinating colors. That would be great for your project!

Solstice, I went into Michael's for the first time in my life today and I was very impressed at what they had. They had fat quarters for sale but none in solid colors. Lots of neat printed quarters though. The one I was looking at had music notes on it. I was looking at thread too. No varigated but they had a natural color (similar to tan or beige).

Yes, 6-inch squares are what is stated in the project.
Beverly (grammyp) has offered me some fabric that she doesn't want anymore so I'm happy!
