QOTD 1/2/21 Which quilt do you love the most?

Do you have a quilt that gives you pleasure just to look at it? I'm not a prolific quilter, but I have a favorite. I call it my "Aunt Shorty" quilt. It was a mess to make. I bought it half finished at an estate sale early in my quilting journey. I took it apart and put it back together multiple times, trying to fix it. It wasn't straight. It was too long, or not wide enough. The colors weren't balanced - just about everything was wrong with it. I kept working on it for a couple of months. When I finally gave up and said, "This is the best I can do", I decided to quilt it myself, as spending money to have it quilted didn't make sense. So, it was my first quilting project.

It reminded me of my Aunt Shorty. She was my favorite Aunt. She loved red and all things "flashy". She was actually buried in a red dress. She wanted me to be one of her pall bearers. I wore a red dress to her funeral.

She wasn't perfect, but everyone loved her. She lived large. I was talking to one of my older cousins and mentioned that Aunt Shorty had been my favorite Aunt. He said, "She was everybody's favorite Aunt".

Bkay, what a wonderful and inspiring story! You really made me think about which one could possibly be my favorite. I guess I would have to say my mariner's compass quilt with my little fussy cut whales and turtles. It's called "Stars of Avalon '15 " inspired by our scuba trip to the Bahamas aboard SV Avalon.

I've been trying to think which quilt is my favorite, and I'm having a hard time. With almost 90 projects so far, I'm having trouble coming up with just one. So... here are four.

Winter Snow from Not Your Grandmother's Log Cabin. I cut all 600 pieces wrong and had to improvise. A total scrappy except for the blue borders. I made it for my step-daughter.

Baby Honu, which I made for myself, but gave to my sister when I saw her face when she looked at it. The turtles legs, head and tail are floppy, i.e., not sewn down.

Bonnie Hunter's Star Struck, another total scrappy but for the tan border. There must be 100 different fabrics in this one. I kept it for myself. I love it.

Maybe the favorite of all - Blushing Aspens. It's all curved piecing, not appliqué. I really enjoyed the quilting on this one, but it was tedious. Made for my sis. She has four of my quilts now.

Karlene - Very good thoughtful question. Even funnier on the UFO's ~lol. Not exactly the same thing, but here's my story: Saturday we had unseasonably high temps and decided to grill outside at the last minute. I had purchased a Porkloin for something else & DH loves grilled thick porkchops. He always complains about the thickness to the point that I have him buy them from the butcher and let him decide how thick to have them cut. So, I say, how thick do you want me to cut them? He says 1/4". Me - no, that's not thick enough. He says, okay 1/2". Me - No - you aren't going to like them. He gets out the tape measure & shows me & says - This is 1/4". I say "Don't show me what a 1/4" looks like!" I cut them 1 1/2" thick and they were perfect. Between sewing most of my life, and office planning professionally where I still do 1/4" scale line drawings by hand, sometimes I dream in 1/4" -- literally.

I seem to be falling farther behind instead of catching up! But by the looks of some of the other posts, I'm not alone in the room!:) I'd like to get a few queen-sized quilts done that were started back when I had the shop - I have all the fabric except for one top - didn't know for the longest time how to assemble/complete it w/the limited amount of fabrics I had. (the fabric line was discontinued before I was half into it, d___!) And now the group I quilt w/once a week (if I'm lucky to have a day w/out kids! lol) want to do a block of the month type that was featured in a magazine recently. It's pretty neat, & I'd love to do it, but don't have a clue who it would go to when it's done! I prefer to know the 'who' before I start -- it helps w/fabric choices! But first I have to get past strep throat - my 1st bout ever! This is the first I've been off the couch since my trip to the Dr's for a shot of penicillin. Poor DH had to fix his own dinner - & even made me an egg & toast - what a dear! (Guess I'll keep him LOL) Not the best way to begin a new year, but hopefully tomorrow I'll feel well enough to sew - right now I'm about ready to crawl back to the couch - vertical isn't that fun:) Hope everyone is healthy!! & all geared up for a year of great quilting!!

I don't have any new innovative things, but I did have to replace my rotary cutter yesterday. The bolt that went through the blade got damaged somehow (ok, ok, Ill confess...by me pressing too hard and using a cheaper brand of blade)... The new one is so much smoother, but throwing the other one away was like saying goodbye to an old friend. Beu, I have a Fiskars rail riding rotary ruler cutter thingy, but mine is clumsy and I prefer the control of separate cutter and ruler.... I'm glad yours works for you! Glad you've also never cut yourself... of course they do make a rotary cutting glove for protection if you ever want to check it out! I've dropped my cutter on my foot and had my pointer finger resting right on the blade when I went to take a cut one time... I noticed a commercial for the Guidelines 4 quilters ruler that has a sliding guide on it and I think it needs to go on the list... it would be so nice if I could just slide that where I wanted it and not have to manually visually find my line again with each cut. Marsha, I'm glad you like the table.... that will be my next quilting purchase.... I need to write or call and ask them a few questions and it will give me a taste of their customer service before I order the extension table.... Has anyone tried those Superior Titanium top stitch needles yet? They are supposed to last 8 times longer than regular s/m needles and I'm just about ready to pull the trigger on ordering my first package to try... Awesome question (I'm glad we resurrected this idea!)... Can't wait to see what things I didn't even know existed that I can't live without!

I haven't made enough quilts to have a favorite...still very inexperienced. I have done STID, 1/4 from seam, and echo. Even with my Janome 6600, getting a quilt of any size to move through the harp is hard! Simply don't know how anyone does it. I am always impressed with anyone's machine quilting. Plus I don't "relax" enough to get the stippling or meandering even enough to look right. Big ole stitches to little tiny ones....just looks like a mess. Last time I tried it, I just ripped/unsewed it all out. Simply have to take more time to practice practice practice. Or maybe I'll try the hand quilting method next time....

Like Lois, I am having a hard time coming up with an answer.

i think when I am working on a quilt for someone special, that is my favourite. Then on to the next one. I do really like the Crayon quilts I did, but there is one little quilt that makes me smile when I look at it. It is a Depression Block done all in darkish colours and varied light neutrals and the HSTs are about 3 in. It was never a planned quilt. I had made up the HSTs for some other project, which just didn’t work. They sat in a bag for a long time until I decided to just sew them together. And voila a winner. It is on a spare bed and every time I pass the door, I smile. No picture, sorry.

Having a difficult time coming up with a favorite, but the story behind this quilt is by far my favorite. When my nieces and nephews started their families, their babies got quilts, too, so after my sister passed away, the next year I was wondering what to make for the grandbaby she would never see. I started talking to her for guidance as I sewed, not knowing or asking what the kids had planned for a theme or even if they were going to. This was way off my normal color for a baby quilt but I sent it anyway. They were surprised and I definitely was surprised! Thanks for the guidance, Brenda. :-)
