Ideas for a Newbie in Northern NJ

Hi there! I just heard of this forum and am in the process of getting quotes. I want a vinyl, maybe a kidney shape or something similiar.

What advice do y'all have for me? I want to get a salt chlorinator. How easy is it to get a variance to get the pool closer to the property line? My town requires 20'. Any ideas about a propane heater? How much more use does the pool get? I am thinking four extra weeks?

And how about negotiating a price? I am afraid of hidden costs like my neighbor got - $4k for excavation - he says his house was built on backfull so they needed to put gravel in for their gunite pool, plus he had to pay $4K just to get them to build a road in to get the trucks in???

My house is built on granite and I suspect my pool will be too.

Money is a big issue, my DH will be doing the decking himself.

Hello,

We are in North Western NJ and just completed our vinyl pool project. We are very happy with our PB and would definitely recommend them. About the additional excavation costs, we were told up front that if they were to encounter anything unusual it would be additional. Best of luck. I am sure you will find incredible information on this forum. We certainly did.

Crown vetch is an invasive plant. I hope you might choice something else. But no - you would have to clear the bramble, etc out first, including the roots. The plants you mention will just grow back. Here is a link that might be useful: Google search

Hey I grew up in north Jersey, Garfield as a matter of fact. Known now as the festering boil on the butt of America. LOL Cmon baymee, maybe airsome hasn't been around long enough in the forum but who is it I'm warning this poster about??? He hasn't been on for a while as a matter of fact. Probably got booted for trying to drum up work here again.

Many things are considered deer-resistant until they're hungry enough. I'd say the guaranteed ones would be the thorny plants (likely why your holly was fine, if it was an Ilex opaca) and plants with scented leaves--Salvias, Lavender, Rosemary. I have a Caryopteris "Dark Knight" in clay soil and it's doing amazingly well, has scented leaves, and you can control how big you let it get by how much you prune in the spring. Cut it back to 12 or 18" if you want a smaller shrub or just give it a trim if you want something big and blowsy. I have found that I need to stake them if I want them big--they tend to splay out in some of the brutal storms we get so my plan is to trim them further back this year to keep them a bit more "tight."

I get that deer might browse anything, but some things are safer than others. For example, sedum are supposed to be deer-resistant, but I've had them chomped on. Grasses and strong-smelling plants are safer. I'm not supposed to say 100%, but catmint and things in the onion family, as well as ornamental grasses are usually a pretty good bet. The thing about grasses is that most that I know of are very drought tolerant and come in colors from purples to silvery to variegated, so there's lots of 'color' there. And there's nothing like those plumes in the autumn! PS - I am also in north Jersey.
