I would like to join but I have one reservation -- we've talked on here before about "crayon" quilts and how permanent that is/is not.

I don't recall the conclusion of that conversation but I did see one on Simply Quilts once and the creator said it was for a wall hanging and not really to be washed.

I would love to do this if you folks say it will keep the color through washings. But I would definitely want to be able to throw the quilt in the wash.

Crayon quilts can be washed in cold water.I recommend that you color a sample square and wash it multiple times to determine how well it will retain the color.You can also use fabric pens............Hope this helps Laura.

What would anyone think about being assigned a month and making it a quilt that there would be one for each month i.e. if I had June, I might have the cat at the beach? I saw a cute quilt on this forum that was a crayon quilt and each block appeared to be for each month of the year. I don't think it said June on it but it was obvious for each month or season.

Guess I'd better get some crayons! I've got a landscape wall hanging I'd like to do in mind and I was thinking crayons might be a good way to add some shading for some depth so I can use them for that too.

I was thinking Doris,
perhaps for the strips a mixture like 2 FQ's cut into strips 2.5 wide example say you colored your kitties peach color then your strips would be peach color or say you colored your kitties purple your strips would be purple.
that would be 12 strips for 12 blocks........I thought perhaps we could use strips with them in the quilt.

OOOH-I hope we get enough for this swap. Is the starting size of the block 12 inches? Would the fabric strips be enough to surround a complete block? so would it be a total of 58 inches for each block?

I think this will be a lot of fun. I just finished a crayon quilt for my nephews wedding with verses and designs that are about him and his fiance. Deanna

I have found that if I find clip art, color book pictures, or google cats on line, and if I use a fine pigmee pen, that is makes it a lot easier. I also put freezer paper on the back of my square to firm it up and make it easier to draw or color. We would love to have you. deanna

Islay -- I have no intention of DRAWING either. I would never do that to my sister quilters! My plan is to find a cat with good clean lines -- like Deanna suggested, say from clip art, online images, etc. Print it out the size I want (may take two pieces of paper) and then make the lines really dark -- and TRACE over them!

If I can't see through the fabric, I"ll cut them out and trace around onto the fabric.

If anyone wants to do this swap but doesn't know how to get their kitty pic a traceable size I could do it for you and email it to you.

For the swap I want everyone to know the block is a 12" finished block so the block size will be 12.5 and we will be using muslin.

I usually buy my muslin from Fabric .com it is also on sale if anyone needs to buy some.$1.53 per Yard it's 58" wide.

WOW! I paid WAYYYYYYY more than that for my muslin at the LQS. Planning on someday starting a Cathedral Windows, but I know I bought a ton extra, I always do.

I started mine last night -- so far, it's working pretty well. I'm using crayola crayons.

RED - QUESTION:
I noticed a couple people mentioned using fabric markers. I used a black fabric marker to draw the picture and am filling in with crayon. Is it ok to use fabric markers more than that for embellishing them?
