White Violet - ID conformation

Can someone confirm if I have the correct identification for this wild flower - photo attached. I think it is:

Northern White Violet (Viola macloskeyi)

Another possibility for the white one is V. striata. The website I've linked to should ID your Violas easily if you want to verify them. A weed is just a plant that's growing where you don't want it to. I love my Violas but have no problem with rouging out the extras. I wait until after they bloom, though. I wondered about Scarlet too but, as I said, I'm not really familiar with them. Pennsylvania seems fairly easy though. It does look nice when it's behaving although it's plain. The red is nice and dark and the leaves are a dark green. The blossom is just a plain star. I think there are prettier ones. MyViolet is helpful but sometimes they say single when they can really be semidouble. I usually try to hunt down some other photos. Or their notion of purple is not my notion of purple ;) Good luck. Looks like a form of Viola riviniana, which used to be known as V. labradorica. It is most often some kind of purple, often it also has purplish leaves. There is also a white form, I think yours is a cross of the purple and white form. I have the same one. They are very common if you want to get them, in nurseries and at private plant sales. Once you have a few, they spread via short runners and especially seed, till you have the carpet from your picture.

Yes, this forum does allow posting of photos. You just have to have the proper "string" to get the picture into the post.

Or, you can put the URL to wherever you may have the photo (TinyPic, Photobucket, etc.) in the little slot provided for it (doesn't show up when you start a new thread -- you have to preview your message, and then you'll see the little slot right above the button to "preview").

JemDandy.....I have white violets growing in my garden. I can identify it for you. They are VERY invasive!!!

When I moved to my house, many years ago, there were white violets growing half a block away, in the curb plot. Now, I've got them all over my back yard. They're just beautiful. I love that they've migrated to my property, and will be transplanting some to my new home when we move.

They're mostly white, with a bit of violet in the center. Same leaves as regular violets.

This is what I have growing in my yard. I mostly have the purple viola's, but see a white one once in a while. Sometimes I even see one with some yellow.

They are everywhere, lol! If you look at the seed head - you will see why they become so prolific. It looks like pepper! So many seeds.

I have those...and purple...and a majetta(sp?)...and a yellow.

There are not many yellow ones...When I find them I transplant them.

The area on the other side of our dry creek was covered with violets. But since Denny started mowing over there I don't think there are as many.

I have little violet vases. I have picked several bunches this year.

I'll go see if I can find a yellow one this year, but doubt it..he just mowed a day ago.

I have the wild purple ones and I love the smell. DH wants to get rid of them because they are invasive so I just transplant them elsewhere.

The "one" potted plant I bought around 10 years ago stated "RARE" white voilet... it's not rare in my garden now....it took a good 8 years for it to grab hold and take control and now it's OUTTA CONTROL... and I CAN'T SEEM TO STOP IT....it's like an alien taking over my garden....I pull it out...it reappears..... AND it is ALL WHITE...no other color in it....RARE WHITE VIOLET....INVASIVE CONTROL FREAKAZOID.....ALIEN INVADER......WHITE VOILET INTRUDER..........AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh RUN..........................................before it takes over your life.......................and yard...............and garden...........RUN RUN RUN........unless, of course...you have an area where you want it to take over....and it WILL TAKE OVER AND TAKE CONTROL OF WHEREVER YOU PLANT IT>>>>>>AND THEN SOME.......ALIEN INVADER........INTRUDER...........but then some people think it's pretty...(and it is)...........but...WATCH OUT........IT WILL TAKE OVER AND CONTROL YOUR YARD AND GARDEN AND YOU WILL HAVE A HARD TIME CONTAINING THE CREATURE FROM BEYOND.........
