terrible day at work yesterday

yesterday my best friend from work was taken away in an ambulance. She seemed to be fine during the day, we were laughing and joking around. We work together in a large garden center, it was a slow day, I was trying to keep busy in giftware and clothing, Marg and her daughter Rach were checking in merchandise at the register area. I went up to the registers about 2 to see if any more goods had come in to be checked in and unpacked and we joked that it was so slow we were losing the will to live. I went back to the clothing dept to clean (look busy) when I went back up to the checkout around 2:45 (I was scheduled on the registers at 3) Marg was sitting in a chair with Rach beside her holding her hand and the first aid lady (Karen) on the other side and the bosses wife sitting in front of her. She looked very pale and I found out she was having a "spell" with chest pains and an ambulance had been called. I went over to see if there was anything I could do to help and her arms went really stiff, about that time the ambulance arrived and Karen told me to tell them to hurry so I ran out the front door to get them. As I was coming back inside I saw Marg's whole body go stiff. The EMT came stolling in like he was walking in the park which really pi$$ed me off. We went back to serving customers as they took her to the ambulance and Rach to the office. They worked on Marg for about 15 min in the ambulance (we could see it "shaking" so we figured they were doing CPR or using the paddles on her. They finally let Rach come out and ride to the hosp with her. I'm certain they took her to the hosp where her husband died of cancer 4 years ago and she hates that hosp. We hadn't heard anything about her condition when I got off work at 6. I'm off today and I told the boss I will call in to see if they have heard anything. I'm scared to make that call in an hour. She is such a sweet lady, 6 months younger than me and due to be a first time grandma in a few weeks. Please keep Marg in your thoughts and prayers. I just don't have a good feeling that I'll hear positive news. We lost another co worker that we were both close to 2 years ago to cancer. I just feel sick and havn't been able to sleep dreading this call.

not good news, she made it through the night but is on life support and it's not looking like she will survive. I feel so bad for Rach having to watch all this as it happened but I'm sure she's glad to have been with her as well. It's hard to believe that less than 20 hours ago we were joking around and laughing together. Work won't be the same without her.

((((((((((((Diane and Rach))))))))))))) Hoping you will hear good news about Marg soon and that she will surprise you, come off life support and do well. It never is easy to lose a co-worker or someone really special to you.

Good numbers. OK, the "thing" what "pops up" is known correctly as the Starter Drive Gear Assembly. Starter Drive will suffice. It is nearly universally accepted to refer to this component as the "Bendix". The "rubbing noise" you hear is the combined sounds of the starter armature "growling" because it is stalled, and the slow motion sounds of compression changes (which normally happen so fast you can't pick them out) in the cylinders. And remember....it did not go kaput "all of a sudden", it gradually became reluctant to start. It has only just now crossed the line from "reluctant to crank" to "I will not crank no matter how much profanity you heap on me". If the weather has turned cooler in your area over the past few weeks, that is likely why it SEEMS as if the problem "just occurred". Cooler temps will further reduce critical valve clearance to the point that the "compression release feature" of the engine cannot automatically lower combustion chamber pressures during the cranking phase of starting the engine. Get Walt's instructions, study them carefully, and decide if you want to adjust them yourself, or if you feel like "farming it out" to a shop. Good luck.

Any item with electronic controls can have a hicup and reset -- that's why I suggested you try it. Could have been a power surge, bugs crawling in places they shouldn't -- who knows? There's really no way of knowing if something like that happened or if a aprt is shorting out or about to die unless you give it a chance to see if it happens again. You've got another thread going with doubts about the LG, so why not cancel that and give it some tim to make your answer onthe KA DW apparent? In the meantime, you can take a little time to see what you'd chocse given a little more time and a little less frayed nerves. I had a KA of similar vintage to yours that I loved. They changed the racking when I had to pick in this house and I went with Bosch. I went next to the top of the line for nearly the least sound and the best features/value combination. I've had to adjust my loading, but I'm very happy with them. Yep -- I have a matched pair and love it.

I knew when I decided to post this I would be setting myself up to be attacked. Thankfully it didn't happen. I don't feel a need to defend how I handled this, but I do want to share my reasons for doing so. Maybe it will help someone else. My DD and I had talked about the possibility of kidney failure. I have a Living Will in which I make it clear that I don't want any "heroic measures" taken when I get to a similar point in my life. No machines, no tubes, etc. Please just let me go. I felt the same for Lottiecat. I wasn't sure of her age, but it was obvious that her time was running out. I would not subject her to anything like that. Doing so would have been trying to keep her alive for my sake. I could not do that. (And, no, I did not overlook the part about taking her to the vet. I did not take her to the vet.) She is gone now. I still expect her to jump up on my lap when I sit in the recliner and turn on the TV. She knew then she could hold me hostage! Thank all of you for offering me such warm, caring thoughts. They are very much appreciated, even though I still tear up reading them. Sue

C'mon, you can tell us. No way did you buy that beautiful chair for $25! Oh...you DID? Wow! I may have to start going to sales. DH had a pinprick while trimming a shrub one summer. He never saw the spider, but a few hours later he had a large red swelling on his arm. I called our doc and described the 'bulls-eye' bite. He said to ignore it -- just a spider bite, blah, blah, blah. I called the poison hotline and THEY said he should be seen. I called the entomology department at the Field Museum and that man said not to wait a minute, to GO and get started on antibiotics. Even with antibiotics the tissue around the bite turned black and died -- about the size of a fifty cent piece. Finally it sloughed off and new tissue grew to fill in the cavity. In about six weeks it was healing nicely. We don't live in 'brown recluse' territory, but bugs can hitch rides and turn up anywhere! Spiders may be small, but they can make you darn sick.

Oh Diane, I am so sorry. She will go be with her husband soon. We lose a loved one here and on the other side there is rejoicing.

thanks everyone, I haven't heard anymore news. I'm still saying prayers but if living means no quality of life I know she wouldn't want that. I'll report back as I'm informed of any updates.
Again thanks, this is the first time I've dealt with a best friend being so ill and I'm finding tears very close to the surface when I can't keep my mind busy.

oh my goodness how tragic, but it was really good that she had people with her and that someone could quickly call 911 for her.

Oh, how sad and scary, I'm sorry for all her family and friends. I too will hope that she pulls thru this and gets her life back to normal. It can happen! Think positively.

My thoughts are with you, too.

It's a shocking thing to see that happen to someone who's basically part of your second family (spending hours at work with the same group of folks will do that to you).

Her daughter Rach will need your hugs and love, too, whichever way this turns.

thank you all for the thoughts and prayers. I'm a little more hopeful today since she has defied what the Dr's predicted (that she wouldn't survive the first night). No one from work has called so I'm thinking no news is good news. Please keep her in your prayers. She deserves to see her new grandson and her daughter getting married.
