This is an IFFI (pic)

Since we're all aching for pictures during these slow times, I'll just show you an "Iffy" I finished yesterday. In our guild, an IFFI stands for "I FINALLY FINISHED IT!"

These are hand dyes and you can see I missed the mark on a few colors but gave up and said "what the heck" since it's only going on my own wall for reference.

Now on to other old things that need to by Iffys.

Pretty! and I love the colors. Did you use a reference book for your dying? And did you soak all your fabrics first to remove sizing?

Hi Kate,
I dye by the seat of my pants after taking a class once. I had to do lots of batches to get these colors and have piles of dyed rejected fabric here for other uses. I'm thinking of doing a quilt all in greens and calling it "Rejects".

I don't prewash as I use fabric prepared for dying. I've posted this before but for newbies, this is the best site for supplies if you want to try it yourself.

I Googled coffee cup tablecloth and this came up. You could search further for curtains, sheets, pillowcases, comforter covers, etc., anything made of fabric. This one is vinyl. Linda Here is a link that might be useful: Coffee tablecloth

I think the bed is beautiful eitehr way and don't think it's the bed itself, but the size your hubby wants, king, that might be the problem your having with it. If that's so you might try explaining to him that you'll have less than three feet on either side of a king size bed. Loosing just short of ten square feet of space when you replace your queen bed with a king bed can make a big difference. Not knowing the exact placement of your windows or any of the doors I didn't add them to the floor plan, but here's an example of floor space with both the queen (in red) and king beds centered on the window wall. Of course this is assuming the walls with the windows in thirteen feet wide. I visually measured that wall assuming your current bed is a queen. I hope this info and drawing helps you both decide what would work best for your room. Oh and if one of you is a bed hog the extra space may be just what you need.

Anita, thread sort of depends on the machine and what it runs best with. My FMQ machine is really fussy and I still struggle to find what to use. I use all cotton as a rule. But, on this one I used Bottomline by Superior in the bobbin. It is finer than most and you get more on the bobbin. I think it's polyester. On top I used plain cotton, cone says Signature 40wt on it but often I use King Tut because my machine likes it best. I probably was out of the off white color that day. I really want my machine to use heavier cotton threads like 12 or 20 weight but still can't seem to get the settings right to keep it from breaking. I'll figure it out one day.

This is one of the prettiest ones I have seen! I was watching a show on TV and the lady said the centers are normally made with yellow, but you can use any color(s) you want. I didn't know the traditional center color was yellow.

Great !! Like the color wheel concept for a wall hanging, even better with fabrics that you dyed. Have done some myself but have to becareful that I get all the dye out. Not always sucessful. Have a UFO that I am using them with black in my sisters pattern. Your colors are so true. Very nice. TFS Jayne

Are you able to reproduce the color if you decide you want it again? I would think just with commercial dyes - the dye lot would vary slightly. I know my formulas would be different each time. ( I'm a great cook, but I'm a add alittle bit more of that kinda cook - needless to say I do not bake.)

Marsha, I keep recipe cards on each color with a snippet glued on it. I seldom use a color right out of the bottle and mix them up so cards are necessary for me to keep track. If I run out of a color, I can pull that card and make another batch. So far, it works for me.

Our retreat girls made up their own cards as they worked last October in NC. We even shared the recipes and snippets to add to our own personal libraries so got five times as many samples that way. It's really fun.

I love this because it reminds me of the Amish quilts I so much admire, especially the ones that use black backgrounds.

Beautiful! Hand dyed- that makes it so much more special!

I love a nice color wheel quilt. I recently finished a ticker tape/color wheel and I adore it, it's so happy looking.

I'm thinking about using the 'clear yellow' in my front loader using the instructions at Dharma for front loaders. I'm after a soft-ish butter yellow. Does that sound good?

Yes, Marsha, use it any way you like.

I love the one you posted Flamingo and wished I'd seen it sooner. I'd have done that instead. It's easier to make a grouping than me trying to get a color exact.

I don't use a washing machine so can't comment, Patsy. I do a piece in a zip lock bag. The washer holds such a lot of water and I can do several yards in a bag easier. I rinse in the washer.

I don't dye yellow much. It doesn't seem to show the mottling like on the other colors. If you notice that bright orange one, it has lots of marks you just can't get with yellow. But, try it and let us know how you do. We learn from each other.
