I too like the bed best with the canopy, although I would prefer a bit lighter scale on the canopy itself - it seems a little chunky. What I really like about the bed is that the footboard is low, so it will not overwhelm your space.

Since this may be your forever home, is there any possibility to do minor remodeling that would allow you to place bed on a wall without the windows? For example, could entrance to your master bath be relocated?

Your idea to find other pieces from other than the Vintage Patina collection sounds good. I think maybe even some light colored pieces might work in the room.

It would bug me if the posts were in front of the windows, like I was trying to fit my size 8 foot in a size 7 shoe. Looks good until you get it on, ha!
You could run the drapes all the way across the wall behind the bed to disguise the overlap.

It's a neat bed, but will look pretty massive in there with the standard ceiling height. Canopy beds really look better when the ceilings are higher for some breathing space. I think you'll just have to convince him to compromise about the canopy.

I agree with you about not buying the matching furniture and buying separate pieces over time. It would be much more custom to your tastes that way.

The above was before coffee... (Never spend money before coffee.) It's possible that your bedposts will essentially frame one side of the window, and look just fine. Would be particularly true if top of bed post aligns with top of window. Another alternative would be to drape the entire wall behind the bed.

I found this inspiration photo (love the casual elegance of this room and the cool colors) and it appears the bed might overlap the windows.... and I do not think it looks bad at all. I do also understand the ceiling height is much higher than what I am working with....

No way to move doorways... we do plan on remodeling our bathroom, but there is no way to put the door in a different space. The bed will have to go between the windows.
Hubby like the dark molasses color of the bed... so I am thinking I will find lighter night stands, dresser etc.

I may be able to get him to take down the canopy (which I do not care for.) How would it look as just a four poster bed? Doable in our room?

gwbr54- wouldn't you know- the bed is 1 1/2" shorter than the windows. So might look okay... and I'm thinking of hanging the drapes very close to the ceiling, maybe like this:

I like the bed and the set in general. I agree, the posters will probably not work. I think you really need a grand room to carry that off.

The bed is beautiful and for me it's hard to say if it will or not from the photo.

However, if I can just say that when I read possible "forever" bed in your possible "forever" house as well as "I'm just not sure it will work", it gives me pause. My DH likes things large and over sized as well. I believe in compromise and gave in on several decisions. BUT EVERY SINGLE time I did, I experienced the hesitation you are feeling for the same reason's you're feeling it. In the end, it turned out to be a huge mistake. Not only was I miserable living with the mistakes knowing I should have listened to my instincts to begin with, but it wasn't cheap to eventually replace everything, even things that wouldn't have needed to be replaced if they had fit well in the room(s). I say that as I wait for our new "smaller" sectional sofa to be delivered. :c)

Please do yourself a favor, listen to that little voice, be patient and keep looking. Forever is a very long time so you should find something that makes both your hearts sing even if it takes a while to find it; you know what they say, all good things are worth waiting for.

I don't know how determined you are to talk him out of this, but by using cardboard boxes and PVC pipe or pieces of lumber purchased and then returned to Home Depot, you could replicate the outline of that bed in your room. You could probably do it just with cardboard and duct tape.

I know how frustrating it is to try to explain size and proportion to someone who is viewing the furniture in a store with 30 foot ceilings.

I think your husband is showing his romantic side, (how wonderful!), and I'd go along. He just may have a vision in his head of you and him having this close, loving life in this new bed, (Not to imply you don't already!) and, to me, that trumps anything else. So it looks a little big? Like you said, you can alter it down the road, and who's going to see it to criticize other than you and him?

I like it a lot. I do think it looks best with the canopy, and my second choice would be just the 4 tall posts - I don't like the low post footboard version at all. I think with the right accessories, it could look fine in your room. Our mbr is about 11 x 15 with normal 8 foot ceilings and we have a queen size 4 poster bed, also in black. It has a canopy option and we've tried it both ways. I actually prefer my bed without the canopy but then again, our canopy was a little more complicated -- it had horizontal pieces the whole way down instead of just the frame connection the 4 posts. And it looked OK with the canopy, but I felt a little closed in/claustrophobic with those horizontal bars over my head.

I think there are definitely options you can do as far as clever drapes and such to disguise the fact that the bed is in front of the windows if it's bugging you once you get it in there. And I will say that I would really consider the queen over the king given your space and the size of your room -- I think it will make the difference between a room where the bed looks perfect and one where it pretty much overwhelms the room -- but again, you can work around it if you absolutely must have the king. To my eye, the proprortions of a king bed always look kind of squatty, but I think that's because I've never seen them growing up and never had one -- my parents had a full and we had a full for a long time then upgraded to a queen (so to us, a queen feels huge, LOL!)

And as far as buying the other furniture elsewhere, I vote yes. That bed has such a distinctive style and I think having all the other matching pieces will take away from its focal point status. Our bed is the only black piece (and the only "modern" piece) we have in the room - the rest of the furniture is antique dressers and an armoire that all have the same general wood tone and styling, but are all different enough that you know they aren't a matching set. It took us 8 years to find all the pieces though, and we lived with random hand-me-down stuff in the meantime while we were looking for the perfect antique pieces-- that's the disadvantage of not buying everything up front, LOL!

I know you said you shopped for a long time to find one you both like, but in both your inspiration pics posted above the bedposts are a little lighter in scale - more delicate and taper more toward the top. Do you think you might find a bed with a canopy that is a bit less chunky? It might not feel so massive and he can have his canopy bed (I thought that was only a girl's dream!) and you might be happier with it. Maybe more like this? Might not be massive enough for him.

I like the bed best with the canopy but I'm having a hard time picturing it in the room. I'd seriously do a mock up. At the very least, bust out some painters tape and tape on the walls where the posts will come to (even though it will overlap the windows). I'd do what you can do to help visualize it better. I did this when I considered the four post bed and it help put things into perspective for me.

After a few days of thinking about this, if you're still trying to convince yourself, I'd keep looking until you find something that works best for you both.

I looked up your other post so I could see the rest of the room, which actually looks bigger than I thought it would. I think the bed could work, but I'm worried that it doesn't work for you. If you're already feeling it's too big for your room, I'm afraid you're going to have regrets once you get the bed. I'm not sure what to tell you though if DH loves it. I do have to say that I think the Lexington Blakeney bed in your other post is such a gorgeous bed and was wondering why you decided against it?

I don't know if this helps at all, but I measured my bedroom and it 12' wide by 14' deep, so it's smaller than yours. I don't have a canopy, but I do have a 4-poster although I don't have two windows to work between. Having a 4-poster in a small room doesn't bother me, but I do have tall ceilings. I also have a queen instead of a king.

I think the bed is beautiful eitehr way and don't think it's the bed itself, but the size your hubby wants, king, that might be the problem your having with it. If that's so you might try explaining to him that you'll have less than three feet on either side of a king size bed. Loosing just short of ten square feet of space when you replace your queen bed with a king bed can make a big difference.

Not knowing the exact placement of your windows or any of the doors I didn't add them to the floor plan, but here's an example of floor space with both the queen (in red) and king beds centered on the window wall. Of course this is assuming the walls with the windows in thirteen feet wide. I visually measured that wall assuming your current bed is a queen.

I hope this info and drawing helps you both decide what would work best for your room. Oh and if one of you is a bed hog the extra space may be just what you need.

I think you should trust your feelings. I think the king size bed with canopy is going to be too big for your space. A queen size with canopy might be more doable. Are you absolutely certain you want or need a king size?

Deeinohio, I had to chuckle when I read your post about a close, loving life in a king size bed. I have a sister who divorced after 20 years of marriage. Once, when we were having a few glasses of wine and the jokes were flying, she told me that she blames the king sized bed she and her ex got!

Too funny, Barb. I was talking about the canopy rather than the size, but that could easily be true - too much bed space equals too much "personal space".:)

How about this idea: buy the mattress set now and use it with a standard metal frame, no headboard, while you continue looking for furniture.

I think it's romantic, but has he promised to vacuum the top of that canopy? Because it's going to get dusty in a heartbeat, and then there's sneezy instead of sexy time.

Your inspiration photo has an airier feel to the room, with light walls, and I think your room will look a lot more spacious and open if you paint it a lighter color and don't have an accent color on the wall with the windows, thus it won't feel so crowded with the large bed.

Stepping down from high to less high, to less high etc. is a GOOD thing, so if you have your curtains hung high, then top of your window, then the top of the canopy bed, I think it will look good.

The only other thing is that the bed in your inspiration pic is way less chunky, and is more streamlined. There are a lot of turns and "knots" in the new bed, and it will be much smaller visually if it's not such a chunky bed.

Use a very gauzy canopy, with light walls and draperies and it will look lighter weight.

Buy the bed and add other pieces as you find them.

Thank you so much for all your thoughts. I talked to my husband and he thinks we should get a king size. So there goes that idea.... I'm going to still strongly consider this bed and maybe try and "lighten" the room up with some more dainty night stands. I LOVE these by Lexington (link below.) In fact, I love this whole bedroom set. But DH does NOT. At all.
I know they do not really match the Bernhardt bed so maybe I can find something w/ a similar look. Something not so massive.... and no wider than 28"

I love that canopy bed and wanted one almost like that for our bedroom. Our room is large - 18 x 30 but our ceiling is only 7 1/2 feet - what were they thinking? I couldn't find any quality wood bed and canopy that would look OK in that room. But then one day I happened to go in the Charles Rogers showroom in NYC. They had a couple of iron canopy beds - this is just one of them. Maybe something like this would work for you. But it would be hard to give up the one you like.
