Isn't it amazing how a relatively simple pattern becomes extraordinary because of the quilting? Fabulous!!

No, I didn't just make this up as I went. Donna and Lafonda, you get a stencil you like and that fits the block just right and then mark the lines with a water washable marker. You do that before you pin baste. Then it's just a matter of following your own lines. You throw it in the washing machine or spritz it with water when you're done to remove the markings. If you miss or go outside of a line, no one knows because the lines are gone by then!! LOL

You'll see the crosshatch grid in the middle of the motif which is from a second stencil. You can start with simple designs if you are just learning but it isn't all that hard.

Yes, I like the frame, Jen, but have only experimented with it so far and didn't do this on the frame.

Jayne, I did the main straight stitching through the blue chain parts to anchor it, then did the SID on both sides of green inner border and then started motifs. I didn't start in middle as it's pretty much anchored by then. But, I usually try to anchor it with something first or start in middle and work out.

Thank you for the instructions!! I'm working on a carpenter's wheel for my dh and it has big 6" blocks. I was "thinking" I might attempt something like that, but it looks very scary (especially to someone that isn't very good at that sort of thing!). I'm always up for a challenge, though :-)

Now....tell us what kind of water soluble marker you use - please! The last time I used one the blue color kept migrating out to other spots on the block.

Teresa, I just assumed all blue markers are the same. I've never had a problem. This one says "Mark-B-Gone" on it. Don't know where I bought it.

I love to use the purple disappearing ink markers for applique and sometimes use them for FMQ. But, the ink disappears in a few hours so you just mark the bit you are about to do. No washing out later. The blue marker lets me mark it all and quilt as the mood strikes.

What a great job you did! What color thread did you use and what kind--cotton or polyester? For some reason, when it comes to the quilting part--I always have a hard time deciding on thread.

Anita, thread sort of depends on the machine and what it runs best with. My FMQ machine is really fussy and I still struggle to find what to use. I use all cotton as a rule. But, on this one I used Bottomline by Superior in the bobbin. It is finer than most and you get more on the bobbin. I think it's polyester. On top I used plain cotton, cone says Signature 40wt on it but often I use King Tut because my machine likes it best. I probably was out of the off white color that day.

I really want my machine to use heavier cotton threads like 12 or 20 weight but still can't seem to get the settings right to keep it from breaking. I'll figure it out one day.
