Any joy or misery in my future if I switch the DW/trash pullouts

Currently, there are several drawers in the island that have been tagged as "dish systems." There are the same nunmber of dreawers in the "peninsula," but all four locations ssem the same to me; that is, interchangeable.

Sink under center of windows, DW to right of window, trashpullouts next to sink on other side - makes sense, right?

But now turn your attention to the placement of the DW next to the end of that run, making it very difficult to emtpty the diswhaster over there to its right. My rental house has precisely this scenario, and it really kind of annnoying. Not earth-shattering awful, but I would like to ty to avoid this corner disphwasher problem in our new house.

If we swapped the DW and trash pullouts, the DW would be more easily loaded/unoaded from both sides. And I could then use the peinsula drawers for the dishes from the dishwasher. They're are handy for both of the adjacent rooms next door - DR and "nook."

Can anyone run their lynx eyes trough this and see if swapping DW and Trash Pullouts will instantly uncover oodles more layout nightmares!!!

I agree it makes sense to move the DW. However, your garbage pull-out trash should be where ever you do your prep work. Where ever you have that planned your pull-out trash should be right beside it. I know that some people put the garbage into a bowl and then carry it to the garbage but if it can be beside where you are going to work it makes it easier than carrying dripping garbage around the kitchen.

I like the idea of the swap. I'm guessing most prep will be on the island, but some will probably also be near the range. Trash nearer the stove would be good.
I have my everyday dishes in drawers near the table and near the dishwasher like you propose -works great!
A cleanup thing that I see is that you have to teach the table-clearers to take the dirty plates to the far side of the sink to start the scrape-rinse-load process.
Also, the recycling and trash is deeper in the work area and creates a little bit of a bottleneck.
IMHO, worth switching.

Thanks everyone. I was so nervous about requesting a second trash at the cabinet design meeting, but no one looked at me like I had two heads. The only thing I was disappointed to learn was that the 15" trash pull-out can only fit one bin. I was hoping to have trash and recycle at both places. Oh well. After posting a question about my desk area in the mudroom, I think I'll put a giant recycling bin in there. If we didn't have so many diapers in this house, our recycling would always be twice our trash. Right now it's about equal. (And no, I just can't go back to using cloth dipes right now. I can barely keep up on laundry as it is.) Thanks for all your feedback! And laughable- thank you for your floorplan feedback. I actually like the "maze-like" design because I like having a bit of separation between the disastrous mess of our mudroom (I know it will be), the bathoom (privacy), and the kitchen. However, I'll be sure to remember your comment, as well as several others, if I get tired of lugging groceries and such into the house in a few years. LOL!!! ;-)

Lots of great replies. Thanks! Yes, I do most of my prep work at the island with my back to the cooktop. If the trash were in the #2 position I'd still need to use a temporary bag or bowl and then empty it into the trash later. I do see where having the recycle bin there is actually more convenient though. Yes, the fridge is directly across from the sink. Aside from moving the dishwasher I'm actually keeping the same layout I already have. There's really no other good place for the fridge. The cabinet right next to it is the tall oven/microwave center so it leaves me with lots of contiguous counter space. Unfortunately there's really no place to set a free standing trash bin. Right now I have a small bin under the desk in the upper left area but that's going to be built out with pantry units instead. I have considered that I could place a small pail under the sink later if the single pullout at #2 doesn't work out. I'm okay with small trash bins because it means I have to empty them more frequently, before they start smelling. In my current kitchen I can't fit any trash under the sink because it's jam packed with an R/O unit, disposal, and plumbing. My new sink will be a single bowl which eliminates some of the plumbing and I'm not sure if I'll add an R/O or not. Right now the island has a drawer unit that opens toward the cooktop and a regular lower unit that opens toward the outside. It all works well because the two cabinets are placed back to back to form a 3'x4' island. Rotating some or all of the cabinets so they open toward the sink and fridge wouldn't work as well and space would be lost. That is something I put some though into already. FWIW I only have 36" aisles so having the trash bin pull out into the sink aisle directly behind the sink wouldn't work so well either. I am considering making the island 6" narrower so I'd have 39" aisles instead. It's especially a problem on the fridge side now because it's a full size. I'll be replacing it with CD though. FWIW, here's the before kitchen Here's the desk and pantry closet in the upper left of the drawing. You can see where the trash currently sits. I'm going to knock out the closet so it's all one space and install two 24" pantry cabinets with pullouts flanking a 36" upper/lower cabinet. There won't be any space there for a trash bin. (yea!)

I see your point, marcolo. I've been reading the recent thread about the calm white finished kitchen, and it reminds me that I've got a really good look going on already. So this is the option you like, assuming the range doesn't get moved: It would be so easy to do, and I'm thinking I could improve the function of the pantry alcove even by switching the cleanup sink and the dishwasher, so the DW is in the corner, and the entry doorway leads you right to the sink. I'll have to check how that would work with a dishwasher door. lavender, I agree that one could dress up the over-sink area #wherever it ends up# with vintage detailing. Any sink placement that is not on the peninsula involves looking right at a wall, but I do think there are ways to make that more attractive. And yes, I've not let go of your favorite fridge/sink swap plan. I'm glad you think it would be good to keep the partition walls up; the fridge+ pantry would fit perfectly in the right side of the alcove, and it does preserve that vintage pantry feel if we keep the partition. The other partition, on the left, is actually a bigger problem because that wall uses more space to allow for the recessed fridge. There's a lot of wasted space in that small area, so it would be a good wall to remove, or adjust in some way, if we can do it without destroying the architectural balance. We actually are getting an offer on our house today #!!!!# so I can get serious about taking the next steps with the overall remodel plan, which will help us know about the plumbing options, and the bigger issue of moving the range #still don't think I can talk DH into that one, but it's still in the mix.#

I think maybe your issue is that you have a bad plumber who isn't very helpful. I went through an extensive remodel and dealt with the Title 24 issues in detail. If you take the time to figure out what's needed up front, then it's mostly straightforward. Not completely, but mostly. It's when you do shopping first and then learn about the Title 24 rules afterwards that it will get difficult and very frustrating. Most quality plumbing fixtures have a version with restricted flow that will work with Title 24. I didn't have to make one plumbing choice in either the kitchen or bathrooms that was compromised due to Title 24. But I did have to make sure to buy the version that was Title 24 compliant. Lighting is the most difficult one to figure out. The issue is that the 2013 Title 24 regulations went one way and forced all the lighting manufacturers to use GU24 socket connectors. That really limits choice. With the 2016 code, they've gone the other way and now let you use regular socket connectors but you need to use fixtures that are LED certified.. Recessed lighting isn't a problem because all the best lights (Cree, DMF) are already compliant. It's all the other lights that are a problem. Many of the nice lights you see at the store are LED but not 90+ CRI and not certified -- so they are not allowed in CA under 2016. On the flip side, I think these regulations really do make a difference. There's no reason people should be putting in old wasteful lights and water fixtures in their houses, simply because they haven't been educated or informed about higher-efficiency products. On a large scale it massively reduces our energy footprint, and the inconvenience to learn about what's required isn't really that much.

It would put the trash bin closer to the stove too - so would be convenient for clean up, prep and cooking. that is if you plan to prep on the island.

I'd suggest putting dish drawers in the island but then it'd be in your way while prepping - possibly.

it 'd probably work out ok to have dirty dishes plopped over the dw. Then the cleanup person could just scrap all onto 1 plate and empty that 1 into the trash bin.

I'm one who will most likely (as I do now) use a bowl for prep scraps. I won't be dripping it all over the kitchen tho as my trash bin will be w/in reach. I just don't plan to be opening / shutting it for every bit of scrap. Will open it once and dump all the scraps into it. easy.

Definitely switch the DW & trash! Does your island have a prep sink? If not, you will most likely end up prepping next to your sink on the perimeter on the side that's closest to the range/cooktop, regardless of your "plans"...and that's the right side of the sink. Getting the DW out of that area and putting the trash there will make it so much easier to work there!

Are you aware that your island is a "barrier island" b/w the sink and the refrigerator? If you plan to use the island for prepping on the sink side, the island becomes an even bigger barrier.

Could you swap the ovens and refrigerator? You probably use the refrigerator more than you do the ovens, so having it closer to the Prep & Cooking Zones would be a big help. Plus, switching them puts the landing zone for the refrigerator either near the range or on the island. In it's current location, the island is the only real option. For ovens, I think the island is fine b/c you won't use them as often plus I, at least, find that landing space across from the ovens is more useful than on the side. If you stand in front of the ovens, the island is closer and if you stand on the side (like I often do), the island is handier/easier to use.

The issue that caught my eye faster than DW placement is the barrier island issue like Buehl just mentioned. I second her reco to switch ovens and fridge. Then you won't have to walk so far around the island from sink to fridge when prepping/cooking.

I would also switch the DW and trash to help separate the cleanup zone from the prepping and cooking zones. It gives you the option of someone unloading/loading the DW while another works in the prep zone between the sink and range.

I have also had a "barrier island" blocking access to a fridge that I hated. However, I can see why you would want your range where it is. How about swapping the fridge and the pantry? It would still not be real close, but at least you wouldn't have to go AROUND the island, AND, it would be closer to the eating area for access to beverages, condiments, putting away left-overs, etc.
