Kitchen: repair, replace or sell as is?

Our relatives are in a bind, having exhausted their HELOC, and needing to sell in this difficult environment.

They are the original owners of a 10-year old house. Everything but the kitchen is in good condition: new carpet and fresh paint throughout, and a full, finished basement that has a bedroom, full bathroom, etc.

It has a basic builder's kitchen with laminate doors and countertops. 2 cabinet doors broke and need replacing; the range hood is a terrible eyesore, the laminate is warped below the base cabinets, on the countertop, the backsplash and along the sink.

How much, if anything, to spend on this kitchen is a hard decision for the following reasons. They are seniors, tapped out, and struggling with the bills. The money would come from my husband and me, and we wouldn't expect to recover our "investment" once they sell. We'd be more than happy if they come out even after the sale.

Is this worth to spend approx 8K to replace them with real wood cabinets? Or does it not matter since prices are falling anyway?
