Some good thoughts for Jan, please

I have a friend who is having brain surgery tomorrow and could use all the Kt's special thoughts and prayers . She has an inoperable brain tumor that is causing loss of vision in her good eye. Her other eye has been gone for a number of years due to a macular whole. The tumor is causing fluid build up and while the surgeons cannot remove the tumor because of its location, they are hoping to successfully drain the fluid. This amazing woman also has MS. I say amazing, because up till now she has continued to play 18 holes of golf (and she's a pretty good golfer), she's a great cook and always, always has a smile and is up beat. People wonder how she manages to play golf because the MS has thrown her equilibrium off and makes it difficult for her to walk at any great length. Apparently, it hasn't thrown off the golf swing. In any event, if you could manage to put in a good word for Jan tomorrow it would be much appreciated.

Thanks guys :) really appreciate the good thoughts. Actually Maggie, I'm in radio, and we do talk about it a little on the air, the guy I do the morning show with is a big animal lover, so we do a lot of dog and cat stories etc..What I really want to do is get with my primary vet, I haven't really talked to him since the initial rupture...I know that he is inclined to reccomend euthanasia for these type cancers :( as they are so aggressive. I just want to show him Bob, and offer my number to anyone contemplating what direction they want to go in. I have no regrets on what we did with Bob. He really suffered no ill effects to speak of from the treatment...His quality of life is excellent at the moment...I am also thinking about starting up a message board for this type of thing. I joined a cancer group on yahoo, but they were sooooo restrictive, and moderated everything, drove me nuts. Anyway I may have to look into that. Thanks again for all the well wishes, I can't tell you how grateful I am that he is doing so well, everyday when we go for our walks in the pasture, I see him galloping ahead of me:) I raise my head and say a little thank you :).

Lorax, Did you get rain last night? Finally some sprinkles here on Merritt Island. Not nearly enough to make my plants perk up though. I'm getting tired of dragging the hose or homer buckets all over the yard to water everything. I feel like we live in the dust(sand) bowl. For the last 4 weeks, on my way home from work in Orlando it rains on me until I get to the 528/520 exit and mysteriously it stops. So frustrating! I'm leaving my car windows down and getting in the pool so I can bring on the rain JuJu. Hopefully today it will work. The clouds look promising.

Isn't that in the "growth" area? A few years ago my oldest grandson broke his leg about 3 inches from the hip socket. They said it was in the growth area. Evidently the growth area is not as strong. They did surgery on him and put two plates in which they later had to go in again and remove because the bone was growing out around it. But he is now 21 and has no problem with it. Good luck to your grandson... I think we worry even more about these grandkids than we did their parents....lol patti

Kudos to your friend for getting on with her life in spite of formidable challenges. I will pray that her surgery is successful and she can get some relief.

Jan came through the surgery fine. The doctors were able to remove part of the tumor....a very small part and confirmed that it wasn't malignant but it's in an area causing a lot of havoc for her. Her recovery will be about 4 - 6 months. Knowing Jan, I'm sure it will be less. Thanks for all the good thoughts and prayers. I'm sure they helped. (They certainly helped me.)

That's wonderful, g'smom. So nice to have confirmation that the tumor is benign and it's great that they were able to take a little of it out. Can they use some of the targeted therapies to shrink it further?

The mission yesterday was to relieve the pressure the tumor was causing on Jan's left optic nerve. The surgeons removed some of the bone in her skull and a very small part of the tumor. After the healing process, the next step will be to use the "Gamma Knife" to attack the tumor and ensure it does not grow. The surgery provided enough space around the optic nerve to safely and effectively use the Gamma Knife.

It just amazes me what medical science can do today.
