Cabinetry hinge input now, pretty please1

I just posted about my choice of a cabinetry line. My other pressing decision is the cabinetry hardware. Our architect recommended using exposed butt hinges for aesthetic reasons in our 1920's kitchen and he also said they would hold up better over time than the inside hinges. The cabinet lines we're looking at (through Bell Cabinetry in Atlanta) come standard with the Blum BLUMOTION soft-close hinges. I was told we could do exposed butt hinges for an additional charge. But my builder is now telling me that, if we do the butt hinges, they wouldn't actually be attached to the cabinetry -- something about them only being attached to the cabinet door and not the frame? -- and that the inside hinges would be the functional hinges. It was clear that he was trying to steer me away from the butt hinges. Thoughts??
