I know that several of us as well as spouses are having health issues to deal with and I wanted to share an interesting and informative thread from the FL Gardening forum here at GW.

I know most of the folks and on Veronika's recommdation I am switching to coconut oil. The post from Tony (who's DW is a pharmacist) was very enlightening.

I have several friends who are Type 2 diabetic that I have forwarded this thread to.

My DD has been reading up on this and has started using Coconut oil in her cooking.

Mydaughter was using that till I eard something bad about it.i dont remember exactly what anymore.You can take cinnimon tablets to ward off diabetes.

In my native country - India, the Southerners use a lot of coconut oil in their cooking and yet obesity or cholesterol is not a renowned diet related problem there from what I know. Yet, my family has never really used it for cooking and I also never did. Thanks to grainlady's periodic insistence on the use of coconut oil in so many recipes, I decided to a little research on my own. Oh and by the way, I just bought my first bottle also, may not use it every day but will surely use it in baking. I wonder if anyone has ever used a few drops in homemade insecticidal sprays for plants? (did not find it in the list) A question for grainlady or anyone with experience - I have this honey wholewheat oat banana bread recipe (to be made next week) that uses apple sauce instead of oil, I wonder if adding a teaspoon of coconut oil will help the bread last a week or more? I usually make banana bread and store in the refrigerator on the second day itself (that does affect the taste) in order to make it last a week or more(and I don't like it cold so need to defrost before having). Coconut oil ...hhhuuummmm, I have never heard of that. I am a firm believer in "why take a drug if a food can do the same thing". My Akita has allergies too, she used to dig blody holes in her face and chew raw patches on her tummy and under her legs. She cant tolerate steroids at all they make her crazy and anxious. I started her on my Mangosteen juice mainly for her joint pain but it seems to have really helped her allergies too (it sure helped mine). She is still itching a lot but no where near as badly. I will look into the Coconut oil and see if that helps her even more. Thanks for the tip! Lisa

Nicole --- We use two different brands of organic coconut oil -- Tropical Traditions Gold Label and Nutiva Organic Virgin Coconut Oil. I always order the Tropical Traditions directly from their website, and order the Nutiva from Amazon.com. I always put a tablespoon of it in my coffee, and I use coconut oil as a moisturizer. I also drink coconut milk, not dairy milk, and eat coconut milk ice cream and coconut milk yogurt. The "regular" coconut milk yogurt is "runnier" than dairy yogurt (and really creamy) but the coconut milk greek yogurt is thick and creamy like dairy greek yogurt.

That's how some of the commenters found out. For me, one of my fat-processing issues was obvious from childhood because of digestive issues. The other is the one I shared with my father; saturated fats build up in our arteries very quickly after they're eaten (or, in the case of coconut oil, rubbed on my skin). My dad was in bad shape heartwise in his forties, but turned his health around by giving up saturated fats. This was before anyone heard of cholesterol, etc.; he had a doctor who was ahead of his time. The few times he ate the wrong fats in a restaurant meal, he ended up in the hospital. Still, until fairly recently the medical authorities insisted fat build-up was a slow process, and no one could possibly get chest pains that way. I remember my cardiologist's shock when he drew my blood for a test and found so much fat floating in it. (Sorry--that sounds gross.)

I have read alot about Coconut Oil while on Low Carb sites. Apparently it helps while trying to lose weight by boosting the metabalism and aiding digestion.
I am going to try it I think. And alot have said it does wonderful things for your skin.
I am going to look for it tomorrow when I'm out.

I did a lot of research on this last year when I read good things about it on a fibromyalgia message board. Apparently there's a good way of processing coconut oil and a not-so-good way. It's a saturated fat, but because of the medium-chain whatevertheycallit, it's not considered unhealthy. In fact, quite the opposite.

I loved the taste! But I had to stop using it because it gave me chest pains. Butter and other saturated fats will do the same thing. So I question those claims.

We're all different, though, so it might work out just fine for the rest of you. Just to be sure, though, I'd have a cholesterol test after a couple of months.

I dunno a thing about it. Except on Dh wonderful new diet (because of high cholesterol)it says avoid coconut oil!
I hope someone has good luck with it but we don't dare try it.

Does one pour the oil on one's coconut? On sore joints?

How much? How often?

And rub it in?

How does one know when there's improvement?

The "good" or "bad" for you difference is in the way it is processed.Some cheaper grades are hydrogenated because of the way it is processed.It is my understanding that the cold pressed,or virgin is the one to use for the benefits.
I got interested in it about 4 years ago and bought some online,can't remember the company.I never really "got into it" and it is still sitting in my pantry.I opened it the other day and it is still good! I hadn't thought of it again until I read this post.DH and I both have high blood sugar and I think I will start using it and see if it helps.We don't take medication,just control it with diet.
Anyone else just take it by a spoon full and swallow it? I tried that a few times before and it kind of strangled me.Anyone else have that kind of experience? The one I have looks kinda like Crisco but not as firm and it melts at body temperature.
At the time I bought it my mom was living with me and she had really,really dry skin,especially on her arms and legs.Nothing seemed to help so I mixed an equal amount of coconut oil and her regular cocoa butter body lotion together.Within 2 weeks time her skin was so much better and eventually got 90% better than it had been.She used it faithfully several times a day.I used it on my face out of the jar and it makes your skin really smooth and moist.

DH cannot eat anything with Coconut Oil--really upsets his stomach and he says the after taste is like soap bubbles. We stick with Canola oil. Also if you are diabetic/heart problems, PLEASE check with your Dr../

Several of the country's leading cardiologists have told DH not to eat ANYTHING containing palm oil no matter how it's processed. (He's battled high cholesterol for years...runs in his family.)
