Displaying collections

I have collections of china-plate, tea pots, etc., and antique laces-collars, runners, etc. I need a way to display these items and I just cannot come up with anything. Any ideas?

The fabrics would look nice in a large shadowbox frame.

I have many collections and display them in varying ways.

I've hung plates on walls in groupings or in a row above my kitchen cabinets.

Tea pots can be displayed nicely in a china cabinet.

I sometimes use vintage lace runners on furniture under vignettes.

Here's a pic of a wall cabinet my DH made with an old picture frame which I've used to display vintage bone china teacups here. I've also used it at other times to display a collection of small pieces of pottery or my collection of vintage glass fishing floats, shells, and other natural items.

If he's willing to do some work in cardboard (Bainbridge board would be my vote) or in balsa wood or bass wood (available in precut strips from a craft store), he could use those acrylic box frames. Box frames come in lots of sizes, and are available at most Wal-mart-type places or at Bed Bath & Beyond. For a larger size (this one is 11x14) he might have to mail-order. He'd have to make a frame for it to slide around, and then make shelves for them to stand on--how thick are they? That might shoot the box-frame idea down. (or it might mean that he should check w/ a custom plastics fabricator, and see how much they'd charge for making a deeper version of it). To cut bass wood, you use a fine-toothed saw by X-acto (a razor saw), which you can usually buy wherever the wood itself is sold. Another idea is to buy a drawer box or some other wooden box and stand it on its side, then screw plexiglas to the top.

Unless it's pairs - things usually look best displayed in odd numbers--it gives them more interest. Since it looks like you have a more trad room - For part of your collection I would suggest putting them on wall brackets to display. On the table, I wouldn't use more than 3 and put at least two on some kind of higher riser, be it a few hardcover books, a marble/plexi riser, small pedestal cake plate, candleholer--I've even used old brass lamp bases too. Tallest in back, lowest in front. For the lowest one - maybe put that on a mirror, small tray, plate that coordinates with color of figurine. Also, there's a product called Museum Wax, you take a bead or several and "glue" the object to whatever it's sitting on to give them a little more protection from GS. I use it because I have cats - it's also used where earthquakes are can occur. BTW - Its not permanent, Jim

After reading everyone's comments it is obvious that it would be best to put the room together and live with the furniture as is for a while. It is such a shame that I don't have a larger house so it can be a room on our main floor living space. There is nothing like walking past a room, pausing at the door, and loving how it turned out. I know that this will be one of those rooms once it is done. Unfortunately it will be tucked into a basement bdrm. Thankfuly we have 9 ft ceilings down there so I'm hoping it turns out as I see it. There are so many responses and I appreciate all of them. Your opinions are really important as alot of you have homes that I drool over and only wish to perfect my home. I'm sure I will be posting as I work on it over the next few months. magnaverde: I reread your post and thank you for the detailed description of the bed. It is so interesting to know more about a piece and then appreciate it even more. I also read some of your other responses to other threads and instantly realized you are very knowledgeable when it comes to decorating. Are you trained professionally in design? I know many of you have asked where I live to find all the treasures/great deals I've posted. I can't disclose that or I might have some major competition lol. I live in Canada, somewhere on the Prairies. I have an aunt who lives in BC and she said the market for this kind of thing is crazy and expensive. We have dealers around here that tend to scoop things like this up quickly, but I'm pretty certain that they're everywhere. Squirrel: the bed is downstairs where my dear children don't venture by themselves often. If you saw it you'd know why. The bed is pretty safe for now. (I am going to get around to posting on the other thread in abit...not to sure what you mean about the depth?) I looked at 100's of photos last night on the internet instead of marking assignments (bad, bad!) and still haven't found the "look". Anyone have any favorites? Pam

I have been collecting tea cups since Japan was occupied, and I have a narrow shelf, about 6-8 inches around the entire perimeter of my breakfast room and kitchen to the point where it intersects with the cabinets. My mother was keen on knitting, crocheting, tatting, applique and embroider, so I have a lot of "doily" cloths which I can display on tables, on the shelving, etc. I have cabinets with glass/chicken wire doors where I put cloths on the shelving and let it lap over the edge and display teapots there as well as special glassware, depression glass, etc. I take this in and out, and display my blue plate Sunday dinner style for a period of time, moving them back and forth from my house to the storage house so when I tire of one, I have another. If I displayed all I have, I would have to move out and let the hoarder show take over, but I keep what I am not using in storage.

One way to display your table linen is to hang them from a narrow, decorative ladder.

At one time I had my linens displayed on an old drying rack in the utility room, but the cat kept knocking it down, so I put it up. :)

The best thing for your lace collars, IMO, is to have someone frame them...one per frame, then hang them in a grouping on a wall. I bet you could do it yourself.

Patricia43- Are you collecting Japanese lusterware? I collect vases, teapots, cups and sauces and 7 inch plates. I use the dishes for dessert when I have company. My mother received a set when she married in 1939. I always loved it. There was one plate left when I moved out. I took it and I still have it 49 years later. Here is just a bit of my obsession.
