Removing Etch Marks from Marble
Comments (15)my3apples, I've honed a carrara top using the powder, made into a paste. Now when I want to remove an etch, I use a sanding sponge--an old one that has most of the 'grit' worn off, with a bit of water. Make sure you start with a high grit sponge, or better yet, get two, and rub them together until they are fairly smooth. ***Warning, first use this method on a sample piece, or in an out-of-the-way area.*** My top has a slight, hand-polished sheen, so I rub until it blends. In my experience, the longer the sanding time, the higher the sheen. I've also wet-sanded with 600 grit paper. Again, try it on a sample first. Now, if anyone has a hint about how to get rid of star dings, please let me know. My younger daughter (24yrs old) was playing with three of those hematite-type chatter magnets, and dropped them on the island counter. The marks look just like Orion's belt. Comments (118)I love the way the marble looks in my kitchen and island but want to rip it out. Life if way to short to worry about etching staining cooking having friends put their wine on the counter. I hate the upkeep and maintenance of it. I cook every night and hate worrying about a counter. I picked out a beautiful granite and when they came to take the template, the guy said are you crazy changing this beautiful kitchen. i caved in and kept them, it's two months now and I hate having them more each day. Will wait until Christmas and they are gone, found a beautiful white granite. The fabricator said . don't do it, I was warned and hard headed and now it will cost me between 4-5000 to replace it. Crazy me...See Morereally helpful pix of marble etchings and stain
Comments (6)Agree with sayde. Marble works well in warm modern, rustic, industrial, old-world, pseudo-Victorian, or pseudo-Craftsman interiors. It does not work at all in a lot of the inspiration pics I've seen here, where it stands as the sleek and shiny centerpiece of a clean-lined, utterly impeccable space. Because it is not going to stay impeccable. If you want marble, you have to want the etches. Because you're going to get them. Maybe your lighting will somewhat obscure them, or maybe it will make them stand out like a pee stain on a wedding dress. You won't know until it happens, and you have to be comfortable either way....See MoreMarble: they're not kidding about the etching!
Comments (69)Momto4kids - Hopefully you're still following this thread. I remember way back when you got your counters rehoned on site. A couple of years ago, DD made a batch of "lemonade" on our island, squeezing an entire bottle of lemon juice on it in the process. I have lived with it, but I had a marble restoration company come out to give us a quote - we are replacing the mantle on the fireplace in our DR and need to have the slate refinished - so I figured while we were at it, we'd do the counter. I recall you saying it was fairly inexpensive to do - the first company, who apparently does a lot of work for an Ivy League college, came out and quoted us $2000 for the job (and told us it was a 2 day job). My jaw hit the floor. The next company quoted us $450 for both the fireplace and the counter and said it would take 3 hours or so. Do you mind telling me how much it cost you? I want the job done right, but I don't want to get taken, either. TIA!...See More2LittleFishies
