First I've heard about it I have heard over the years that children from those restrictive Communist countries had extreme emotional problems .
Howevr if the return of the child was correct the sendee should receive some kind of punishment IMHO

I'm not sure what to believe. I think there is probably a lot more to this story. The child was not just dropped on the street. He had someone looking after him for the entire trip.

I read that the child did have someone take him to the authorites when the plane landed. The adoptive parent said that the child threatened to burn down the house and kill the family.

As for the "last straw" for the Russina government... 3 adopted Russian children were killed within the past year by parents or caretakers. I couldn't find the story again, but here's a link that shows many other disturbing stories about children adopted from Russia.

I think she was very, very ignorant not to realize she was adopting a child that might very well be a big challenge for two parents let alone a single parent.

I think it's ridiculous to adopt a child and then discard him because he's difficult. I wouldn't even do that with my pets let alone children. If the story is as it appears I wouldn't blame the country for starting to think Americans are not suitable to adopt children from their country.

We're becoming a country with too many people who are "all about me" and who lack a sense of accountability and responsibility.

It's an awful situation all around. On the one hand, you want to just say, "She adopted him, she's his mom, and that's that." In a perfect world, it would be.

But having recently watched friends of mine deal with a Russian boy they adopted (their third Russian adoption), I see how truly awful life can be with a child with such severe problems (and ones they weren't told about, either). My friends were unable to keep their son at home, because he was physically harming his brothers, sisters and mother, and he had to be hospitalized for months. He's on medication now that helps, but he is a constant disruption in their family.

Part of me thinks, well, any adoptive parent should realize that things aren't likely to go easily, but the woman in this story claims that she was lied to and misled by the Russian adoption agency, and maybe that's true. Maybe things were way, way worse than she had been led to believe when she made the decision to adopt.

To add to this, she may not have bonded to the child yet, because of his problems. Not that she couldn't have bonded at some point, but without that bond, she may not have had the overwhelming drive to keep him and work through things.

When my friends adopted, they had very little time to see the children before the adoption was finalized. They saw each child for an hour or so a day for a few days in a row, in a supervised setting in a room in the orphanage. Not really time to get to know the child in depth.

I can easily imagine a situation where a prospective adoptive parent is told that the child has "some developmental delays," and after the adoption, the parents discover that the child suffers from fetal alcohol syndrome with associated disabilities, often including severe mood swings, poor impulse control, tendency toward violence - and attachment disorders.

So, you get a child you want to bond to, but aren't yet bonded to, who is disruptive, violent, and not interested in bonding with you. Through no fault of his or her own, but still.

I do realize that most parents in this situation manage to make the best of it, and I don't advocate giving up the child you've adopted. I just see what might lead someone to do this.

I think it is disgusting. A child should never be considered a throw-away child. If he has problems, then he should be getting some emotional treatment. That boy loses his birth mother at 6 years old and is sent to another country, probably doesn't know the language or traditions well and acts out in response to all the trauma he has been through in his short life. So instead of getting the help he is obviously in need of, he gets dumped back where he will feel even more unwanted and be more traumatized in the end. My heart goes out to this lad. Some people just shouldn't be parents.

Glenda, I'm not sure which you're asking about. When you say "What do you think about this! Right or Wrong" are you asking about the adoptive mother's action or about Russia's move to freeze the adoptions?

If the former, I think it's absolutely wrong. I can understand the issue and that she wanted him gone, but that's not the way to do it.

If the latter, I don't blame them at all.

I blame the Russian government for this travesty they call adoption. You are telling me some caregiver of this child didn't know how psychologically damaged this child was? C'mon, those kind of problems don't manifest themselves just because the boy was placed in a foreign country. There was money to be made by adopting that boy out, and now that he is back in Russia do you think the government with return that money? I highly doubt it.

Do I think it's awful for the boy? Of course. No child should be subject to whatever it was that made him violent and caused that woman to send him back. But I think this is one of those situations that until you walk in those shoes, you shouldn't judge. Would I attempt to adopt a child as a single parent? No, especially a psychologically damaged one. But that is just me. I know I need to partner in parenting.

A child isn't like a piece of clothing. You don't get your money back if you return it.

I agree that there should've been more information - complete information - given about the child's emotional situation (everything about him). Absolutely; if Russian adoptions don't give that info, that is a huge flag. However, that doesn't change the fact that children have been killed (murdered) and "returned".

I don't even disagree with the adoptive mother's decision to "return" him (I hate referring to it as that). But she should've gone thru proper channels. Maybe she did and we're not hearing that; but you still don't stick a kid on a plane (whether he was being picked up or not) and have someone drop him at the orphanage door.

I think Madonna or Brad and Angie should come forward and take this kid. Or maybe Rosie O'Donnell?

What do you do with a CHILD that wants to burn down a house and kill the family? Sleeping with one eye open is impossible. Locking him in a padded room, doesn't sound right either. He has psyc problems to the max. Most people don't know how to handle that. Most people can't even imagine how bad that really is. A kid throwing a tantrum 20 times a day would be easy compared to a psyco.
I don't see how this mom could forsee that. Sending him back was better than what happened to the kids in Lydias link. The Russian government can get him the help he desperately needs and possibly find a foster home later. Love doesn't cure everything.

I wonder if there are similar incidents involving adoptions of children from other countries?

As some others have noted, I've read about the severe emotional problems some of these kids have, to the extent that therapy doesn't help and the children are actually dangerous to themselves and others. I don't know what the answer is other than not adopting from Russia at this time. Very sad situation for all.

You mean to tell me that there isn't that kind of help available for the child in the USA? I doubt Russia is as good at giving the child the help he needs as he would get in the States. The adopted mother didn't love him or she would have tried to do everything possible at this end to help him. Love grows over time....having a child for such a short time didn't give either of them a chance to really bond. Did she know that she was adopting a child with Fetal Alcohol problems? If I was adopting a child and I was told that there were developmental delays, I would be asking the simple question "why?" and wanting a complete medical history BEFORE I agreed to adopt.

She took on the responsibility for that child when she adopted him, just as she would have if she had given birth to him. If she was having problems, she should have sought out help where she lived.

I'm not making any judgments about the adoptive mother or the Russians, but I saw one news report that said that the boy had a hit list of people he wanted to kill. About a month ago there was a 20/20 or Dateline report on families with one or more Schizophrenic child, their lives are horrendous, there's very little help to be had. One family had to get a 2nd dwelling and take turns staying with the sick little girl because she couldn't be trusted with the baby brother in the same house while they slept.
