It would really help if you could post a pic of your layout or your current kitchen. I would love to help you but I'm very visual and the layout helps us all better visualize. You may want to check through the FKB to see if you find something similar to your setup.

I don't like a closed-in cooktop - I need room on each side for cooking prep and landing, etc. Also, when you take something out of the oven, where will it go?

Yeah, the first design for our kitchen had the micro-above-wall oven thing, and it looked fabulous, but in our case it left us with not enough landing space for hot pans from the ovens and too little counterspace, so we're doing either a range or wall-oven-under counter instead.

I agree that it would really help to see your plan. Also, what kind of cooktop? If it's high output gas, for example, I'm not sure that would meet clearance requirements.

This would be far from optimal, but I respect your desire and reasons for wanting a wall oven. The 4 inches of counter improves things over having it right up against the side, which I have seen. In our last house I did all the prep on one side of my range, because there was only 11 or 12 inches on the other side between it and the fridge. I didn't use that counter for anything, really (it did collect stuff, which was a negative)...So I'm not sure if it was 4" instead of 11 or 12", it would have been any worse.

Make sure with whatever burner configuration you have, there'll be room for pan handles, and that you'll have a handy location for setting hot things (landing space) when you get them out of the oven. I do worry a bit that with no elbow room you may be putting yourself at higher risk for burns when dealing with things on that crowded side of the cooktop. It's all about trade-offs and adjustments, though.

My wall oven is 2 or 3" to the left of my cooktop and one of my reasons for remodeling. I hate it! I feel closed in and have no room , and have to take hot things out of the oven and past the cooktop for landing. The wall oven is also right next to the garage door and I feel like it closes in the door we use the most.

I am going with an old fashioned stove or a drop in top and wall oven below it. I guess you can't go that route because of you knees, but maybe you can figure out another place for that wall oven.

I don't know why, but I don't like the look of appliances right next to each other. JMHO!!

I like landing/prep zones for both burners and ovens. I lived in a kitchen without adequete places to put down that hot pan of cookies, and very little prep room next to the cook top, and it was a constant hassle.

Cleaning up took much longer too, since the frige had no natural spot to park leftovers pending saran wrap and the like.

I am thinking of doing the same arrangement -- wall ovens in a stack next to cooktop. My landing place would be the island, which would be right behind the wall ovens and cooktop. I use the island/worktable I have now in this way and it seems to work. But I don't know if I like the aesthetics of the ovens so close to the cooktop. Anyway, the above posts are helpful, thanks

I had one that way and hated it because some of the larger pots wouldn't fit centered on the burner well AND I was always bumping against the wall while stirring things. I'm right handed and the wall oven was to the right so it might not have bothered me so much if it had been on the left side.

If nothing else works, you might try just raising the base cabinet for the wall oven on the side of the cooktop so that it is up about 6" and then have a countertop on top of that (kind of like the raised dishwashers so that the height of the wall oven is up off the ground a little. That way the closed in feeling and bumping into the wall cabinet while stirring is eliminated.

It is considered a fire hazard to put a cooktop next to any tall cabinet. If you install it that way and have a fire you may have trouble with your insurance claim. If you are determined do it, use an induction cooktop or at the very least a cooktop with the controls on the side where the oven is. Keep steam away from the side of the cabinet too as it will deteriorate the finish on the cabinet. A convection/ microwave unit might take the place of your oven for many everyday tasks. Then you could just use your range for holidays or major entertaining. That works for me and my bad back but there are only 2 in my everyday family.

Below is another plan, getting rid of the wall oven and including a 36" gas range. Unfortunately, I don't think I can really afford one in a self-cleaning (the knees again) model. They seem to start around $5,500, whereas I could get a reasonably nice 36" gas cooktop and a standard self-cleaning oven for $2,500-$3,000. (The budget is tight, so this is a big deal.) I could just keep my 30" range, but then I'm back to having a cooktop that's often too small.

As I'm sitting here, I just thought that I might be able to use this second plan, substituting a 36" gas cooktop with drawers underneath for the range and moving the wall oven to the right of the refrigerator, where there are currently drawers. How would that be? It doesn't solve the problem of getting the oven up higher, but maybe I can't do that.

By the way, I thought of putting a tall oven cabinet to the right of the fridge, but then it feels really closed in when you enter the room from the back door or the bathroom and laundry. (I tried mocking it up with newspaper.)

In case anyone gets this far, here's a drawing with measurements, if someone has other ideas. My main wishes for this remodel are to put the sink and cooktop near each other (they're currently on opposite walls), move the oven up higher, and still save space for a very small eating area. I would appreciate any and all help!

This is a little far fetched but... Would it be possible to recess an oven into the wall you want to keep clear? Problems with that is no landing space & have to consider the cab doors swing & handle clearances.

Just a couple of thoughts as I am going through a similar challenge -- would you consider a 30 inch cooktop rather than a 36? This would give you more margin and may-be you could tile or use stainless steel on all three sides around the cooktop arch area. I do think there is some benefit to keeping the ovens near the cooktop because that's where the ventilation hood is. I personally am sensitive to smells and would probably be using ventilation much of the time when I am cooking something in oven.

Ci lantro, I love the idea of recessing the wall ovens, but I can't because it would interfere with a decorative arch in the dining room.

Sayde, if I go with a 30" cooktop, it still doesn't get me enough room for the wall oven. And I'm not concerned about having the fan near the oven, as I never use them together.

So, if you had to choose between (1) the second picture with a 30" range instead of 36", or (2) a 36" cooktop where the range is and a separate oven to the right of the fridge, which do you prefer? I think my dream of a raised oven isn't going to come true.:(

What is to the left of the refrigerator? Could you fit a 27 (or maybe even a 24") wall oven in there? You might have to reduce the size of the cab to the right of the fridge to make it fit.

Yes, I can fit an oven cabinet there by shrinking the size of the cabinet to the right of the fridge, but there's no landing zone. (That's where I originally wanted the oven.)

I see you are using the ikea planner. If that means you are planning on ikea cabinets, I would strongly suggest you post this over at ikeafans, too. They're awfully clever about figuring out how to make things like this work out.

Don't put the wall oven next to the cook top. My boyfriend has this and it is awful. I hate it. No down space. In an effort to "stop" any spills, etc., from his electric cooktop, the former owners tiled the wood cabinet the oven was in, next to the cooktop. Awful, awful, awful.

He has a 27 inch wall oven rather than a 30 inch. You cannot fit a cookie sheet in the thing. Awful, awful, awful. He doesn't cook so it doesn't bother him. I think his kitchen is very poorly designed, but I won't go there.

Options--could you move the sink to the corner? It would involve some plumbing moves, but shouldn't (unless there is some unseen thing) be too bad. Move the dishwasher to the left of the sink. Place the cooktop where you have the dishwasher. It won't be centered under the window but it should give you some downloading space on each side of the cooktop and the sink. Leave wall oven and fridge where they are.

It still gives you a work triangle. I am not fond of sinks in the corner nor the dishwasher next to them. Had that once and didn't like it. When the door for the dishwasher is open, it really hems you in. However, that was a teeny tiny little apartment kitchen and I am sure yours is bigger than that.

The layout I described pretty much cuts up your prep area but it gives you what you want with the cooktop and the wall oven.

There are 30 inch ranges that have five burners if you decide to go with the range instead. That might help you get more cookspace.

Corner sink at 36" put a 9" tray base to the left of that for clearance next the DW (24") 30 " cooktop base and you should have room for a small cab 9"(spice cab) at end of run

You may want to change window if possible to fit cooktop

Yes ,you can install a wall oven under your induction cooktop. It's a good idea to talk to a knowledgeable sales person at a good local appliance store. Most cooktop manufacturers will only warranty it if you install the same brand of oven. And even then, you need to be very careful about the spacing between cooktop and oven.
