Organic Donna, how are you doing with your animal volunteer work? Are you feeling more upbeat these days?

Rita, how's your DH doing? Oh, yeahÂand you, too. :-)

I've been wondering about both of you too and I am so glad Susan posted her query. It's been awhile since we've heard from you. I hope you are doing well.

Hi, Susan (and all)! Thanks for asking!

I've just been extremely busy here working on a lengthy project for the Air Force. It's very cool but very detailed - and I have a Monday morning deadline.
:( Worked all weekend but I'm hoping to get some time off next week. It will be nice to take a breather, as my sis is here visiting from Maine, and May is shaping up to be a wicked month with graduations, weddings, etc...plus gearing up for our vacation in Maine. (We're still contemplating whether this is a good time to take a two-week driving trip, considering the price of gas!)

DH is - well, DH. Still has the mystery pain in his left abdomen. *sigh* I dunno what's up with that. ??

I was checking in here reading once a day until I got so busy (read: behind). In fact, I'd have missed this thread if you hadn't emailed me. Thanks again for asking. Hope all is well with the KT family.

Oh wow! Now that *does* sound like it was a good day! That's fantastic Judith. Now go forth and empower thyself! But just one thing - if he is enjoying his job, I do hope you can work out a situation that will be mutually satisfying whereby he can *still* enjoy his job. Upon re-reading your other posts, I realized that your DH has a consultant's job or a consultant-like job. I'm so sorry, my dear, but work-fixation, being on-call and frequently being away *is* the life of a consultant. You still do NOT need to be running interference for him with his kids or stalled out/in a holding pattern until "the time is right" (euphemism for: I'll do it later which is a euphemism for: never). You've already articulated well that your personal development needs to factor in as well - obviously since your own personal goals are not being realized and that is making you chafe. But I do so hope you can manage something where he doesn't have to give up what he likes about his new job. Say, a question for you: Does his job lie in New York and does he only return to Boston for the family or does his job extend here too? If it is the former, would you consider moving to New York? It may be easier all told - for both of you. Your children are not so old that it would be difficult to move not to mention, there is something quite culturally and intellectually enriching and exciting to move to a different city, state, country ... I also liked what geogirl wrote - not just in evaluation of your scenario, Judith, but it was eye-opening for me too. Perhaps it will seem less contentious if one realizes that it is not just good advice for a marriage, but good for any relationship at all. Work relationships, friendships, as well as marriage often respond similarly to the same actuation ... no surprise there since the same people are involved, only the pairings are different. Matter of fact, geogirl's advice made a few things click for me regarding a great friendship I had once had that soured - and soured spectacularly and rapidly. Interestingly, there are shades of the same issues that Judith summarized about the path of her life with her husband that are common to me with this friend of mine. (Aside: this was a perfectly platonic friendship, no hanky-panky to cloud issues or muddy waters). We were probably both to blame that our friendship became quite cancerous (well, almost certainly, although I like to think that I was a really good friend to him and he - well, not so much) but the bottom line is that it was wrong for me to simply assume that because I'd tolerated my friend's moody, temperamental, cross-patch phase when he was going through a tough time, that at a much later point in time, when he was back on even-keel and when life-things became burdensome for me that it was alright for me not to bother to hold my own temper and irritability in check with him. And I can be quite temperamental and very quick to temper. So it isn't exactly what geogirl was talking about but metaphorically and euphemistically - I did see a parallel and it was quite clarifying for me. In the meanwhile, good for you, Judith. Good for you for taking some time for yourself. You need to put some vim and vigor back in your life! Glad you went to the gym. I'm heading out for a run myself. Say, I'm right in the Boston area myself. Maybe I'll be running past your place! :-)

Perimenopause/Menopause Question

Gardenspice, the doc told me hormone levels wouldn't be conclusive because I still get my periods regularly? I am kind of skeptical about that, but he usually knows his stuff, so he is probably right. The thyroid test was in conjunction with my annual blood tests and he said all of those were normal, except for anemia. For the anemia, he sent me to have a colonoscopy and endoscopy to rule out anything sinister going on. I believe he ordered the cardiology tests because my father had his first heart attack at age 51, and died of his third age 58. I am glad I was checked because those palps scared the heck out of me. It's easier to deal with them now that I know they are nothing to worry about.

Giving up Facebook games
Q
Comments (27)
Good for you Kathleen. I play the games still but don't really spend a lot of time on them like some of my FB friends do. My brother has been keeping my Farm Town going for me since with my old computer I was unable to play it any more. I have been back lately now I have this laptop but only to plant crops and send my brother fuel. I have joined some of the games because my friends needed neighbours but I don't play them. I'm almost ready to give up Farmville because of the glitches and the same for the new Treasure Isle. I don't know why I started it to begin with. I do like Treasure Madness though because you don't have to put too much time into it. If I am on the computer I spend my time researching genealogy for myself and do look ups for my friends. Even if I am on the computer I don't sit. I am up and down doing the things around the house that need doing. I don't usually turn my computer on until after 7 pm, then turn it off and then back on after 11 pm. Sometimes I will check in during the day and then forget to shut FB down until I noticed the computer shut down because the battery needed charging. I guess I should keep it plugged in. Most of my friends that play the games like Farmville and Farmtown are at a much higher game level than I am because I just don't spend that kind of time playing. LOL With my old computer that was slow it would take me much longer to do anything compared to how fast my friends got things done. LOL Accepting gift requests on FB was very time consuming and took a long time so when I got this laptop I started to go through all of the gifts and accepted some and got rid of the others and most had expired. Every time I got rid of 100 there was another 100 that had been stored and when I got rid of them there was another 100. There was over 1000 gifts that had been sent to me for the games. I couldn't believe it. LOL That is the reason I don't send out very many game gifts to my friends unless they ask for them. Anne

What is with the Cable Company?
Q
Comments (12)
Something doesn't smell right about this. I assume you didn't give any credit card or bank info out. I'm not sure what it's going to do either. Telemarketing is far cheaper for them than door knocking so while it's certainly possible, it's just a red flag to me. I'd definitely call the cable company and ask about it. Did they leave a copy of the paperwork? If it's legit, they can tell you quickly at the cable company and I'd find out the purpose of the box. Seems like cable doesn't require the boxes these days so that's another flag. And to not charge a deposit or something and say toss it in a closet? Seems strange. If it's not legit, it's easy to make a badge and paperwork on the computer. County records will give homeowner names and they could make a list of them from the records to look more credible. Also, if it's legit, don't throw the box away, turn it in and get your account credited for it. Had I not gotten a receipt when I turned my cable box in years ago they'd have charged me something like $500 for it. Were they driving a car marked with the company name/logo? I asked if it goes up later and he said if it does just give him a call and he will fix it. This one waved a flag for me. Sales people seldom can do this. They might be given parameters they can give at the sales pitch but I've never seen them have the power to change company pricing down the road. There's no price guarantees on cable like this that I know of! Adding channels isn't a big issue. It's possible that the converter box would be needed for noncable-ready TVs but yours I'm sure is cable-ready. They usually don't spend money on equipment that's not needed. They usually don't like to give a longer cord than needed to barely reach the set in my experience. I'd definitely advise caution. Again, it could be legit and a lack of info making it look suspicious. But then again it could also be a very big scam. Just a few things that they could be looing for: -Alarm systems -Dogs -Age/physical condition of occupants -Level of apparent income -Valuables out? -Security cameras etc. Judy, please, run, don't walk to the phone. Check this one out.

Good to hear from you, Rita! I guess you're allowed to be busy. :-)

On the subject of left abdomen, I learned in my genealogy quest that it's not uncommon for Stahl family members to have their appendix on the left side! One of my grandmothers was a Stahl. I have no idea where my appendix is, but I just thought I'd pass that along.

Come back soon!

Organic Donna posted either here or in the kitchens forum that she doesn't have a computer anymore. Too bad. I'm sure she'd love to know people are thinking of her so hopefully she'll check in occasionally.

WOW,
I'm so touched to know someone is thinking about me. I don't have a computer yet but will be getting one in a couple of months. I prematurely sent back my broken Acer and now I am waiting for Apple's new Macbook, (rumored to be out sometime between July-Sept). I rarely check in at the KT and today decided to do a search under my user name.

I just love volunteering at PAWS. I fall in love with each and every dog and miss them when they get adopted. My heart just sings when I hold a lonely dog on my lap. I've learned to stay away from the cat section. It's too hard not to take them home.

I'm feeling better with my thyroid situation. I've still not lost the weight I gained but just today I started counting my daily calories again. I used to do that everyday and never had a weight problem. It's much harder to do when I'm flying though.
My bathroom remodeling is finally over and I'm so happy that's done. It's going to be featured in Chicago Home Magazine's July/August issue.

I'm still trying to get motivated to ride my bike. Currently it's collecting dust while sitting in my condo. I have been walking a lot though. I want to learn to kayak but haven't done that yet.

It's hard to post on KT because I can't reply very often.

I hope you are all doing well and I miss you all.

If you're still on, Donna, were you able to post pictures of your new bathroom before your computer died? Would love to see them! Your kitchen remains my all-time favorite; I adore blue and your granite is just IT.

Hey Donna - it's good to hear from you again. What a change in your bathroom, especially the squared sink and toilet. I remember the photos of your fantastic kitchen from the Kitchen forum. I loved your blue granite (especially with the kitties sitting on the counter!).
Looking forward to seeing you here more regularly when you new computer arrives.

I just saw the posted bathroom pics and they are gorgeous, of course! Before I scrolled down I thought the first one was your new bathroom and it surprised me, as it seemed more "ordinary," and I have seen what you can do with a room. Love the bathroom! I've never seen a squared-off toilet and think it and the sink look sooo good. What are the cabinets made from? I like them too.
Glad to know your work with animals gives you great satisfaction and that you're feeling somewhat better regarding the thyroid. I know it can be difficult to get the med just right sometimes. Thanks for posting the pictures, Donna!

Hi everyone,
I still don't have a computer, I'm in Japan again and can't sleep.
Thanks for the compliments on the bathroom.
sjerin, tha vanity is a kitchen cabinet from Scavolini. I have a 4" toekick instead of a 6". I also made a pocket in the wall and recessed it about 2". It's a zebrawood laminate. There is a lot of storage space inside.

Ok, we just finished a kitchen remodel, now that I have the plans (your photos! :-) I want to start on our guest bath (which is laid out just like yours) remodel. Wow, it looks great! I would love to talk to you offline about it. Do you have more photos, perhaps up on Photobucket or Flikr?
