Do you think black shutters and a bright red door would work here

I need to repaint my shutters and porch in the next two week, and I want to buy a new door with some window element in it. It currently has a dark reddish/brown door and shutters and porch. The lights are now new fixtures in black.

I know, the yard needs landscaping too, but ugh, 1 thing at a time!

I should probably shut up because I like it just the way it is. Of course, white goes with anything except some off-whites, so you dould do pretty much whatever you wanted there. So yes the black shutters and bright red door would look fine. I like the deep red, though. It's a cute house.

I'd love to see some hanging flower baskets and an old fashioned porch swing on your porch this summer.

Absolutely. White house, black shutters, red door: a classic.

You could also go with dark green shutters and a lighter green door. I almost used BM's "Creekside Green" on our door--our shutters are "Essex Green"--but ended up going with "Cottage Red."

I've been looking and looking, and what I think may be ridiculous based on the amount of natural light your kitchen gets and in which direction its window is facing. (for example, ours is true north facing and gets no direct sun -- it casts a v. "cold," grey feeling on everything in there) However, with that big fat caveat out of the way: I now think painting the living and dining rooms the Herbal Green, the arch (all of it, both sides) the Hazelnut and the kitchen the Blue Spruce could be great. And this is why: the Herbal Green is soothing and subtle but still has a presence. I also think it will frame your gorgeous windows and views and totally set-off your fireplace. The Hazelnut I like because I just really like it! It is so warm, such a happy (but not in-your-face happy, if you know what I mean) color and its tone totally makes sense with the Herbal Green (neither are jarring, both appear to have similar dusky undercurrents), plus I think it'll subtly highlight your new arch. The Blue Spruce I like because, again, I think it "makes sense" with the Herbal Green and the Hazelnut (because of its tone) and it helps set the kitchen apart somewhat -- somewhat, because you don't want anything too crazy when all the spaces are open to one another. I don't think you'll actually have lots of room for the Blue Spruce, right? Because it's a darker, bolder color I think that can work to your benefit in the kitchen: it will highlight the blue-ish feeling in your basalt slate countertop and echo the earthy feeling of your cork and hardwood floors, all without overpowering / darkening the space. At least, in my mind's eye of your house that's what I'm seeing. My youngest is now up so off I go! Take care of yourself, -Brooke

Thanks squirrelheaven for all the visuals. Thanks everyone for the great suggestions. I can't make a lot of changes at this point as I just was wanting to change the shutter color and add/remove shutters but when I saw the lamp post, I fell in love with the character it gave the house. I had the one plant stand that I keep filled with flowers beside my front door. I guess I can put it in the back yard so I don't have window boxes and planters....maybe too much going on. I think I'm going to take the advice and not put shutters around bay window. And I love the lamp post so I want to add that and of course I love the flower boxes but who knows if I could keep them looking pretty all year. I may just start out with one on the bay and the one on front rail and add more later on the bay if I decide to or I may just do all by the bay. Ack! It all looks cute. Since I don't have but one set of shutters on the house and one front door, why would it look better to have each different colors? Why does having the door and shutters the same color not work? I'm just curious and interested. I've always liked black shutters/trim on a white house, but I really dont' have much trim on the house. I figured too that I wouldn't be so limited to feel like I had to plant red flowers each year to kind of blend in. I added the shutters to the bay window when I was considering making the shutters all black and thought the black bay window shutters would balance out so I'd have a set of shutters on each side of the red door. That's why I did that. But after seeing all the visuals, keeping it red looks good with all the added character but still curious why most say to make door different that shutter color. Hi again.. Thank you for your comments... natesgram..The screen door I have is at least 20 yrs old..It is bent and tweaked so it needs to be replaced...so I'm leaning towards a black screen door. If it was in good shape I would try painting it black..that's a really good suggestion that maybe someone else will benefit from. meowzer..I really like having a screen door to let a breeze in. I live in Southern Calif. and it's pretty warm all year round...so eliminating the screen door is not an option for me. (Sigh) I really love a pretty front door and I think the screen isn't very attractive, but it's all about function here. Coco and RM...Thank you for posting pictures of your doors..Absolutely LOVE the look of both! I think that seals it for me. gilly...thanks for the vote of confidence. As to the suggestions of purple...I think my 84 year old neighbor would call City Hall on me for sure. She's the neighborhood police, if you know what I mean. KA:)

Most 'greys' have an undertone and if you choose one with a blue undertone it will perfectly complement your red bricks. Don't think colour, think temperature. If everything is red or brown (which is essentially orange) then some cool will really balance it. This is Indian grey sandstone with red brick.

Ohhh, that could be pretty too. I'm in Alabama and just tired of the Crimson Red everywhere! I really love green -- but would it look Christmasy?

You could use Charleston Green, which is so dark it appears black at times and dark, dark green at other times. It is usually 7 parts black to one part green. Sherwin Williams has it in the Historic Charleston collection.

Ohhh, off to check out Charleston Green. I really love the house and am terrified to paint then hate it, but I'm just tired of the all red/brown look, kwim?

And thanks Oceanna. I loved the colors when we moved in, but now I'm just tired of it. Though, a fresh coat of paint may help, even in the dark red! :-)

Love that front porch!
My neighbors have a somewhat similar style house and theirs is white with black shutters and red door (a deep rich red), it's a very classy look!

Thank you all very, very much! I love the charleston green! And the mock up Oceanna did in black and red is great. I think I need to buy a practice shutter now and try to get moving on it!

My house looks so much like yours except that it has two dormers. It has been white with dark green shutters and trim with a mahogany front door with a large oval glass and sidelights for 15 years since we built it. The roof has been green also. We love it but are ready for a change.It needs a new roof(after tennis ball size hail) so we are thinking of black trim/black shutters and a grey roof. My husband wants grey trim/black shutters but the pictures online of houses all have white trim/black shutters.I would love a red door but he likes the mahogany door. Could we paint the wood around the door and sidelights red?
