Black front door? What do you think? Pics..

Hi all...

First of all, my screen doors need to be replaced. They are a dark brown, as you may or may not be able to see in this photo that was taken at dusk. I would like to replace them with black screen doors.

Secondly, I was thinking of painting my front doors on the outside,black. Right now, they are white, both outside and inside.

I know it's difficult to see in this photo the actual color of my house. It's light gray, with red brick.

There are some black elements already...I have black window awnings on some of the windows, that I really like...and there are black grids on the windows, as you can see in this photo.

Also, if I do paint them black, would it be strange to leave them white on the opposite sides, or the inside that faces into my house??

What do you think? Any other suggestions?

Disclaimer: I love a black front door, so I'm not particularly objective ....

I think your doors black would look terrific, esp. because they would pick up on the black grids in your windows. We often see doors where the exterior and interior colors are different, so I don't think keeping the inside white would be a problem.

That being said, looking at your house the color purple jumps out at me for your front doors: a deep, gorgeous, vibrant purple. Or plum.

I too love a "black" front door, although mine is actually technically dark browny-grey (Behr Stealth Jet). It's white on the inside, and I just used painter's tape to make a nice line down each side (near the outside of the edge, so most of the edge is interior colour)

You can always plant some pansies and/or violas, ornamental kale and even seed some lettuce to fill in (and to eat - Red Sails and Black-Seeded Simpson) in those areas with cool season color this winter. It looks really nice and I can't wait to see it when your daylilies are blooming next spring. (your pics posted here at Garden Web, of course;-)

The door is fiberglass so staining is an option, too. Although stained fiberglass doors always look to me like... stained fiberglass. :) Cream is interesting. I'd not thought of carrying something like the trim color to the door. I really need to take better pics, but our camera battery is dead and we apparently (oops) packed the charger. I had thought of green, though more of a muted sagey green. Had not thought of eggplant but that's interesting as well! The porch faces south, so it will only get indirect light. And it's about 11 feet back from the steps, so it never be well lit other than the electric lights (decorative one by the door, two recessed). The stone has hues of ruddy browns, oranges... but no real cream. It's more of a gray-beige (when I held a SW Macadamia swatch up, considering it as the main color, it all but disappeared).

No, kids are gone (YEAH! Love them, but I've done my job)No grandkids that will visit anytime soon, no pets, only a man that can behave like a kid (you know that one). I really don't think the door would be an issue, it's not like we would fling it open and I could put one of those stoppers where it won't fling open all the way - we had that on our front door in our old house. Had a console table right behind it, and it never hit it, so that could be an option. I have so much wall space in this house I will NEVER be able to fill it with pictures. I have a corner of my living room that will be a gallery, and a really long and wide hallway that needs lots of "stuff" on the walls - they're empty! As for what I'd be putting on there, more than likey it's going to be breakables, but what about using the sticky stuff they use in museums so if it gets bumped it stays? Never used it, don't know the name of it, but know it exsists. The opening from the kitchen is 48", the unit is 50"w, so basically, you'd see the entire piece, so I thought it would be nice visually. The piece will come out the exact depth that the floor vent that's next to the bathroom (seen in 2nd pic). The door to the bathroom when fully opened is right in line with that same vent. I wanted to make sure if someone was coming out of that bathroom that we've yet to use would knock in to the piece. They wouldn't, unless they're a very large wide person (if I don't stop eating, that person may be ME!) I want to say THANK YOU ONE AND ALL for all your insights, thoughts and ideas, I appreciate everyone taking the time to reply. I'm a bit torn, I see what some of the problems could be, but I really like the look of this and think it could work. Here's a few more pictures I just took, so this is as it stands now. What do you think of black gutters?

If you had painted your trim black, you could pull it off. I would advise going with the closest match to your trim & siding color. My house is White Dove siding, trinisic black trim. My gutters are black but my down spouts are a shade of white to match the siding (& copper colored on 2 of them that are against cedar posts). I nearly went black for the downspouts but after seeing it all done, I'm glad that I did not. I like them blending in with the house design & not standing out or trying to compete with the rest of the exterior design.

I wouldn't do black and for the same reason you're thinking of doing black - you already have many black elements. I think a front door should stand out and a black door on your house would just blend in, though I really like black doors. I won't suggest another color because I don't know your preference, but I like rmkitchen's idea of a purple, but leaning more toward navy.

I have a similar color scheme as you on the exterior of my home (minus the brick) and we have a black painted door. The inside is painted white.. I think it will look classic on your home.. Maybe I am impartial.. but I think it would like nice!!

I think you should get your screen doors first and then decide. Your current screen doors are covering nearly 1/4 of your front door. If you actually do get black screen doors, then black for the front door is the only option in my opinion. However, if you eliminate the screen doors, your options for color open up, like a dark forest green.

It is possible to spray paint your screen doors black? Anyone ever do that? I think it would go better with whatever color you finally decide for the front door.

My neighbors have a burgandy door and thier screen/glass door is trimmed in the same color. You really don't notice the screen/glass door since it blends so well with their main door.
I had my door painted a very dark brown/black and I love it...it's not black it's not brown, but it's dark and rich...I do not have a screen door.

natesgram..The screen door I have is at least 20 yrs old..It is bent and tweaked so it needs to be replaced...so I'm leaning towards a black screen door. If it was in good shape I would try painting it black..that's a really good suggestion that maybe someone else will benefit from.

meowzer..I really like having a screen door to let a breeze in. I live in Southern Calif. and it's pretty warm all year round...so eliminating the screen door is not an option for me. (Sigh) I really love a pretty front door and I think the screen isn't very attractive, but it's all about function here.

Coco and RM...Thank you for posting pictures of your doors..Absolutely LOVE the look of both! I think that seals it for me.

gilly...thanks for the vote of confidence.

As to the suggestions of purple...I think my 84 year old neighbor would call City Hall on me for sure. She's the neighborhood police, if you know what I mean.

Hard to tell from the pix as to what color your house is, but with the doors set back so far (it appears), I would rather see something interesting. I liked the idea of the plum (very elegant with the black and grey), but I could also see a really deep yellow like fall mums, or teal.

Good luck OP... at least in SoCal you'll have nice painting weather. My goal of doing the trim around my front door was thwarted this week with 7C (~45F) temps! Brrr!

I lived in a townhouse that had a black front door that I absolutely loved! If you like the look you'll love it too.
