Cooks, please help...

I want to make scalloped potatoes on Sunday - the box says use a 4 quart dish. Does anyone know what that relates to in a pan size e.g. is it a 9 x 13 or anything similar? Or how do I know what size casserole dish to use?

Also, I want to buy a ham and cook it in the slow cooker with some brown sugar, sweet and sour sauce and garlic. How long would I cook it, do you think?

Not sure about putting ham in a slow cooker, oven might be better then make a glaze with brown sugar etc. Depends on the ham.

Take 4 quarts of water and pour in a dish to see which size is best. Then pour the water on a bush, OK?!

As for the ham, I don't think hams need long slow cooking. Maybe if you look at the wrapper there will be directions. Sorry, I don't have much experience with ham except for Honey Baked, which is pre-sliced, and they recommend serving without heating.

Laurajane- Is your sink centered on that wall...or not? It looks like it is in some pictures, but not on the floor plan. I like the idea of the oven, either under the cooktop or on the island...but then you might rethink moving the dishwasher :)

Have you considered an induction range? There is a lot written on this forum if you use the search at top. Adding a third element (Euro or True convection) does not guarantee even heating. If you have an all convection mode contrary to marketing it can make a hot spot. Dual fans can be good. Variable fan speed is good. A slow fan is less likely to create a hot spot than a fast fan. It is hard to sort out all of this because these things are not always I the use and care guide. The platinum has a back burner in the oven but no bottom element/burner. The convection fan runs every time the burner comes on. It is never off all the way even if turned off.

Kelly, you said you can make changes? Can you extend the pantry wall toward the exterior? I used the original plan for this variation, but it puts both the clean-up zone and the cooktop on the back wall, similar to darbuka's kitchen. A kitchen that size can support the addition of a prep sink, so I centered one on the island. The fridge is recessed into the pantry, making it possible to have a full-depth model without taking up as much aisle space. Dish storage is to the right of the DW, extending into the pantry if necessary. On the other side I put counter beside the oven, for landing space, but it could double as a coffee station. The *box* says to use a 4 quart dish? OK, is this something like a Betty Crocker box potatoes? Whenever I've made the box potatoes I use either a 9"x9" or 8"x10" pan. A Pyrex 9"x13" pan is 3 quarts, others will vary a bit depending on the depth and putting a box into a larger pan would have them almost in a single layer I would think. I've made 2 boxes in a 9x13 pan before. When you think about it, many slow cookers are 4 quarts and there's no way a single box would fill that up.

For the ham, it really depends on the type of ham. If it's pre-cooked, all you need to do is warm it up and try to keep it from drying out from too much heat. I doubt a conventional butt or shank portion ham wouldn't fit in a slow cooker so I'm guessing you're thinking of something like a Cure81 type? I wouldn't cook it on low for a long time.

Scalloped potatoes and ham *does* sound good. Haven't had that in a long time.

Also, most glass baking dishes have the "size" on the bottom, ie 2 quarts, 4 quarts, etc.

About the ham, it does matter what kind of ham it is and also the weight. If you are going to be in the store where you bought it ask the Meat Manager how to cook it.

When I make scalloped potatoes, I just pull out a casserole, slice as many potatoes and onions as I want, using the food processor.
Assemble it using milk, and mushroom soup.
My scalloped potatoes always grow, I don't follow a set recipe, just slice potatoes till I think I have enough.

A cottage roll is nice in a slow cooker, but I'm sure other hams would work as well.

Well thanks everyone! I think you are all right, the slow cooker is not a place for ham...the recipe looks great and the pan conversion told me that 4 quarts = a dish that is 14x10x2.
I think I'll just put the ham in the oven to warm it up and make a glaze to put over it for the last 1/2 hour plus more to pour on top when it's served.

My favorite ham glaze is red jam (strawberry,raspberry) and some powdered clove, maybe some pineapple rings and maraschino cerries for looks. DH scrapes the glaze off and applies a liberal coating of mustard.

I get slow-cooker recipes in my inbox, and this was here today.
It looks good, with the poster's verdict.

Honey-Glazed Ham
5-7 pound bone-in ham
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 teaspoon gluten free Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 teaspoons ground thyme

Use a 6-quart slow cooker. Unwrap ham, and discard flavor packet. Put ham into slow cooker.

In a small bowl, combine vinegar, honey, butter, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, and thyme. Pour mixture evenly over the ham. Cover and cook on low for 6 hours, or until heated through.

The Verdict.

Oh yum. Slow-cooked ham is so super easy and always comes out fantastic. The meat stays perfectly moist without needing to baste, and tastes wonderful. My family really likes this glaze--it's sweet but not over the top.

Jasdip...thanks for sharing..I will be trying this on Easter.. I also do the scalloped potatoes, I just slice my potatoes, with lots of thinly sliced onion, some chopped bacon, then make my cheese sauce, just white sauce then add lots of shredded chedder, and velveta..bake for about 45 mins yum... making myself hungry.
