Painting Cabinets: Paint Color/Type and Technique Questions. THAN

So my husband is almost finished making the cabinetry in my new laundry room. YIPPPEE

I am going to paint them a nice cream/ivory (still have not picked out the color). Any suggestions?

Anyways I am not sure what type of paint to use. I have painted cabinets in the past but used a melamine based paint which I found to be simply to hard to use (very thick and sticky). I do however need it to be durable as it is a big job I hope to not do again anytime soon. Do you have a suggestion? What Sheen should I get?

I was thinking aura so that I would not have to prime them but it is so darn expensive and I am wondering if I even need to prime at all?

So thanks for any tips and tricks you can give me for this project.

Don't skip the priming. Priming seals the pores of the wood so that the finish paint stays on the surface and doesn't soak into the wood. Use a water based primer.

After priming, sand lightly with fine sandpaper or sanding sponge. Clean off the grit very thoroughly.

I recommend either SW ProClassic paint or BM Impervo. They are both intended for woodwork/cabinetry and leave a nice, smooth finish. I've used the ProClassic, but not the Impervo, but have read that the Impervo is comparable.

Choose either a satin or semi-gloss, whatever you prefer. Paint two coats, sanding very lightly between coats.

A Chinex brush works well. Use a high quality brush.

A technique that works well for me is to roll on the paint with a mini roller, the stroke through with a brush. Don't overwork the ProClassic or Impervo. They are waterborne paints and dry very quickly. Just brush a couple of times to smooth, then move on always keeping a wet edge. The brush marks will flatten out as the paint dries.

As far as the color, I like SW Alabaster, West Highland White and Dover White. They are all "warm" whites. I'm not familiar with the BM whites, but I'm sure someone else will chime in.

Ditto on Randita's advice. I used the oil based BM Satin Impervo and it went on very smoothly. The only drawback is that oil based paints, while very hard, yellows a bit. Next time I'll use the waterborne Satin Impervo.

I used BM Cloud White--a nice creamy white.

If the panels are not fixed, they will move as soon as the humidity/temp changes. Use a brush edge to wick away the paint that fills the gap. A definitive line is much better than a cracked paint line. Roll and tip? Do you mean, roll and backbrushing? Stipple is most likely to occur on hard, smooth surfaces like wood. Personally, I would brush the entire job. However, if you choose to roll, backbrush (ever so lightly) to remove any stipple. Hand sanding is adequate. The most important thing is to make sure the wax is totally removed from the existing finish. A #180 grit is fine. Sanding between coats is to remove any airborne debris that has landed on the wet coat; provide an ultra smooth finish and open the paint if the second coat is delayed (more than 24 hours). Michael

I just painted my bathroom and kitchen cabinets and I'm happy with the results. They were honey oak in terrible shape. In the bathroom I painted an off white color, then glazed them in a greyish/tan color, then covered with polycrilic with Minwax poly in Satin finish. As of right now the kitchen cabs are painted off white though not yet glazed. I don't like how the poly I put on top of the glazing on the bathroom cabs makes the cabinets so shiny so I may not add the glazing in the kitchen. The painted off white in the kitchen looks ok - certainly better than the oak IMO. I wanted to cover a lot of the grain which is my case was raised and in poor condition so I sanded a lot but not down to bare wood. I primed and put on 2 coats of BM White Sand. Then I glazed (that was tough to get right and VERY aggravating) then I applied 2 coats of poly. I have a guide for it and if you email me I'll send it to you electronically. About to embark on cabinet finish selection as yourself, I've read some about PCV (post catalytic conversion colorant varnish) which many fine cabinetry manufacturers are now using, a switch typically from a pre-catalytic (and other technique) lacquered varnish finish (non-conversion coating film). The advantage of PCV is a far more durable, UV inhibiting finish (no yellowing) which withstands household chemical cleanup, is hard to scratch, better resists water stains and buys the owner time on a colorant finish. It's higher in solids so it requires less coats (benefit to manufacturer) and in fact a high build of finish (5mil) will make the finish brittle. Most manufacturers don't go over 3mils. Cure time is immediate giving manufacturers an edge up on turnaround/efficiency. The biggest downside to PCV finish however is it's hard to repair, especially on site. The process of building conversion coating films is an irreversible process (there are various types, 2k, acid catalyzed and oil based). No process, including PCV finish is bullet proof. However, the selection of a MDF door and drawer front with PVC apparently is felt to be a leader in the industry for those choosing paint (actually colorant) based finish which lasts. This finish technique is worth discussing w.r.t. to your desire for a mitered door. The alternative and still widely used manufacturer paint finish, pre-catalyzed lacquered varnish, has the great advantage of being repairable. The chemical process is reversible (forms the film by solvent evaporation alone, for example, as using single component lacquers). The film is not normally damaged when re-dissolved, so standard lacquers are easier to repair (on site too). Builds to 3 mils to 5 mils are tolerable (but lower builds are more common, even as low as 1.5 mil by one cabinet maker I recently reviewed). The con to a lacquered finish is the cure time: it takes 3 to 4 weeks (not the same as the stack time), so it takes longer for an order to be properly finished. These points are taken from my notes, and experts will have more knowledge. When it comes to paint (now often called colorant) finish, it is helpful to know about these two techniques and use them to help pick your cabinet doors/drawers product selection (mdf vs plywood) as well as finish technique for longevity with minimal cracking. There is no perfect finish is always worth remembering. Hope this helps.

You can certainly paint two tones before the chair rail. Getting a straight line is very simple: use a level and draw a very soft pencil line. Or, use a laser level, make tick marks and tape along those. You will have 2 chances to obliterate those SOFT pencil marks, once when you paint upper, then again at the lower. You should always remove the tape immediately. Blue tape in 1 1/2 inch works well, or you can use the green tape. Even though it says safe removal after one week, I would still remove asap. Also, you can paint in the "white stripe" that mimics the chair rail (or whatever color your trim will be) as a temporary solution. And, to get that straight line from the tape that you mentioned, gently burnish the edge of the tape running along the edge with your thumb. And when you are removing the tape, gently pull the tape at an angle, pulling it down and toward you. If you've seen the Home Depot commercial where they gleefully and quickly rip the tape off the wall may leave you with some repairs! Remember to let the paint dry before you tape over it, and you'll know it's wet because the tape won't stick. And finally, you can alway re-tape an area to fix it if it's not perfect. Can you tell me about how much is the BM Satin Impervo. I actually have never heard of this paint. I will deffinately look into that. Unfortunately I don't think I have access to SW here in my area. BM, Behr and CIL I do.

Has anyone painted furniture with Aura?

BM Satin Impervo is impervious. We primed our master bath that had wallpaper with a primer suggested by BM, and then we painted over it with BM Satin Impervo.

I had a cleaning company clean my house after our flood and one of the ladies asked me (since she felt after seeing my home that I might know a little bit about walls) how do you take down wallpaper? She described it as being on the wall perfectly, no tears or loose edges. I asked why she did not paint over it. She told me it would look awful and then alluded to the fact she wanted her walls to look like mine. I took her for a closer look and showed her that there was wallpaper there. She was almost speechless, so it does a great job. In fact I used it on my cabinets when I painted them but I had the color tinted to a beige white. I really do not like bright shiny white cabinets, just one of those little hang-ups I have. It looks as though if I had them I would have to be a neat freak and I am not.
