Vintage table... found on curbside (pic inside)

Hi there... I found this little gem on a trash heap one day last week. All it needs is a little TLC. I don't know much about it except it is about 29 inches tall, 36 inches wide, it had leaves at some point in history, it has brass capped feet and the slides underneath are marked with "watertown slide" Would anybody what time period it's from? It's too narrow and short to be a dining table, dont you think? Went back today today to see if maybe the leaves were thrown out or maybe some chairs. No such luck.:) Thanks.

What a find! I think there's an antiques and also a furniture forum here..maybe someone there would know if you can't find the answer here.

Can I have it? :) You could put it in any room. You could make a "game table" out of it if you have room. It's perfect for playing cards, putting together a puzzle, wrapping presents, etc.

Thank you. Those are all great ideas for using this table. If I can't find any use for this table anywhere in my house you most definitely can have it;) I may cross post this in the other forum you mentioned.

OMG, OMG, OMG, Joanna---that is the IDENTICAL table! Is it listed as a Milo Baughman?? I can't believe this--I'm only on my first cup of coffee and I'm already having heart palpatitations! I am so glad I decided to post on this site and that you happened to be reading! I don't think I ever would have known what I got, because I have limited knowledge of modern furniture. Reading everyone's delight at my serendipity is almost as much fun as finding this was! Here's the story: I got it at a nearby Salvation Army. I've been on vacation since Christmas so I've been indulging my thrift shop addiction (and it truly is!). Over the years I have found some incredibly fabulous things there but stopped going because about a year or two ago a new manager was hired who appeared to be robbing the place blind (this is not unusual at these thrift shops--sometimes corrupt employees sell all the good stuff out the back door). He and another antiques dealer who got herself a part time there no longer seem to be employed, and the good stuff is coming back out on the floor. I think successfully shopping charitable thrift shops involves persistence and tenacity. My house is truly full of treasures I've found over the years, yet any friends or family that I've directed to these stores scratch their heads and say they can never find anything. Maybe the stuff just finds me, because like a stray dog, it knows who will love it! Regarding the frames on the print, I think I do agree that I should leave them as is. I do agree with Flyleft and dillydally that they are part of the art--it's even more clear IRL. But if I were to paint them, I do like Les's suggestion of a wood tone from the burl. I think I'll leave them for now--they have a real mid-century bohemian feel that helps balance some of the elements I have in this room. Amy, I can't help but think of your gorgeous decor when I look at these red prints, so I am even more inspired to keep the original frame color. And yes, we should talk--I've been meaning to check out a couple of the places I think you're referring to. I also recently found a cool little consignment shop in your town that I was thinking of consigning some stuff to. Oh, what a way to start the New Year! Thanks everyone for boosting my excitement! I wish you all similar luck in 2009!

Lots of stuff, but one thing that comes to mind is an old garden gate. I had seen some in magazines and wanted one...the kind with the hooped wire insert and curlique gate topper. I priced one at an antique architecture place for $88 and one for $55 at the flea market. Was driving down a road and saw one leaning against a patio table in someone's yard, and I was thinking..."Lucky dogs. They got a gate just like the one I want." A week or so later, I was driving past the same place...and it was SITTING OUT WITH THE TRASH ON THE CURB!!!!! What can I say? Some people have no taste. I stopped and loaded it in my car before you could say "Don't." I find a lot of stuff in dumpsters too. This was in the dumpster behind the thrift shop. It's a McCoy vase...perfect condition.

What is the height between your countertop and the bottom of your cabinets? I think 18 inches is standard, yours look a bit higher which is what we are thinking of doing in our new kitchen. 3. Thank you all for your compliments--I'm so happy that you appreciate my kitchen, and I am very touched by your kindness. Since I love spreading the DIY news, I'll share some info one the cup-shelf project: I've mentioned using scrap lumber, left over from other projects--everything was scrap! I ripped the shelf and support pieces from a 1x12 board, and used a 1/4" cove bit in the router, to trim the bottom edge of the support piece. The towel holder corbels and spice shelf are attached to support pieces, which are screwed into the wall studs, parallel to the counter. The pieces are all connected. All the screw holes were countersunk and filled. Here's a close-up showing how everything fits together: The shelf sits on top of, and is screwed into, the long support piece, and there's a screw that goes through the corbel into the shelf, toward the front. LOL, at this distance you can see the seam where the two corbel pieces are joined. Oh, well, it adds character ;). The corbels are cut on the same upper curve as the supports for the old school cabinet, across the room. They're 1.5" wide, compared to 3 inches on the school cabinets. This pic is of the underside of the corner, with a scarf/miter joint. Each piece is cut on 45 degrees, then fitted together and nailed, making a stronger joint than a butted joint. It's actually backwards, because my miter saw 'reclines' in only one direction, and I didn't want to cut the angles by hand. One could also use a biscuit/slot to add strength. This is the support for the towel holder: The corbels are attached to either side of the 'placket', which is screwed into studs. The window used to be wider, so there's an extra stud in that area. The corbels were then attached to the cabinets. The underside of a cabinet, showing how the corbel is attached--you can see the screw holes: Hope this helps!

I posted in the Antiques forum about the slides on the bottom of the table, which makes it after the 1880s because of when they started making the slides. I also said that the table was Biedermeier-esque.

All the Biedermeier round tables I have seen either have a central pedestal or legs that join in a shelf, plint or base underneath the table top.

The flush-with-top apron on the sides of this table seems Deco-inspired to me--doesnt matter really because its a great find.

Beautiful! It's dining table height. I'm now using just a round table I found at a thrift store in our sunroom so our grandson can have the other end as a play room. If you don't need more seating I'd use it for that. Or give it to me! ;^D

Wish my neighbors would leave stuff like that for me. We had trash day and our neighbors put out an entire girls bedroom set. It was scarffed up within minutes. I could not believe they did not ask around as there were several girls on our street. I would have paid them for it. They said they just did not think to ask. They could have CL'd it and got a lot for it. oh well.

Lucky you, that is a real find.

Palimpsest-Thank you for your article about the "watertown slides" very interesting. Yes, I agree with you about it being more art deco-y than bediermier-esque( I googled some examples). There are some similarties such as the tapered legs. I think 1920's or 1930's is more like it just from the images I googled.

What a wonderful find! I think it would make a wonderful game table. I can also see it placed in front of a large window and flanked by two matching chairs. But, whatever way you use it, it's a lovely piece. We're lucky to have Palimpsest around with such interesting, valuable info for us.
