Lightening Strike Near Pool, need new Pool Lights

Lighting hit near our pool. A bunch of our pool's equipment breakers flipped (and some burned out). The only pool equipment that was damaged, was the pool lights. They are ColorLogic LED lights (I don't know the exact model number).

The pool company is going to come out to replace them next week. They don't know the cost yet.

Now, the question. How much should I expect to pay for this (obviously labor charges could vary). It pains me to have to pay "retail" for these lights, plus install charge. I would rather buy them online myself and have them install (if possible)..I know this is going to be expensive...

So, what is a reasonable price for replacement for the bulbs? Can these lights just have their bulbs replaced (if so, how much)?

Also, is this a faulty install if the lights can be affected by lightening strikes? Or is all the "bonding" to prevent humans from being struck through pool equipement/water?

BTW, this all happened this morning. The pool is relatively new (finished building in October, then shut down for the winter).

This is the value added of every independent retailer/dealer. What you propose in buying them on the web and having a pro install it is like bringing your own burgers to Burger King.

If you were installing it yourself, the web is nice. Doable.

There are no bulbs, per se`. These are lit with LEDs, quite a lot of them. They are sealed and usually not further serviceable. Expected life is measured in decades.

If your pool is under your homeowners, you may be covered after the deductible.

Yup, your right, this is going to cost. If you had Color-Logics 2.5 lights, you can now take the opportunity to go to CL 4.0-s.

Yeah, I guess the reason I was thinking about buying them myself, is because the pool builder told me the cost to fix (parts only) some non LED light (don't have the model off hand) and she said it was $950/light, which seemed extreme, considering that the color logics (which are different, I get it) go for between 500-600 online.

I payed my pool builder a lot of money to build this pool, I don't need them gauging me again for something like this (although it isn't their fault, of course).

Our home owners will cover this (after our $1000 deductible).

Not all shells are the same. Normally, you get what you pay for. Your price seems very low and it makes me raise an eyebrow of skepticism. Who makes the shell? What is the warranty's length and what is covered? How long has the builder been in business? How long has he sold this brand? How long has he been installing F/G pools? What is to be done with the dug up dirt? Is haul away included? What if you hit water or rock during the dig? Have you checked his work and consumer ratings? I don't like to see fiberglass pools with less than a 3'x4" collar. Your's is less than 1/2 that. The extra weight of the collar can be the difference between a pool floating or not in high water table conditions when the pool needs to have it's water level lowered. Will there be a rebar web attached to the pool's edge extending into the concrete collar? I expect #3 rebar and a 12" grid to lock the concrete collar to the pool. I don't see a sump to pull water out from under the shell if it needs servicing. This will happen eventually, such as when the tile needs replacing or if the water needs diluting to correct a chemical imbalance. Is the initial fill water included? The pool needs to be filled and back filled at the same time. What are they using as a base and back fill? An improperly set F/G pool is a nightmare for a homeowner. How do you plan on sanitizing? I don't see a chlorinator. What kind of pipe for the plumbing? Avoid flex pipe. While easy to work with, it sucks when it fails. Murphy dictates it will where it's hardest to get at. Using hard pipe on the pool usually reduces the likelihood of a failure. With F/G pools, the installation crew and supervisor need to be better than good for a quality job. A lot of fly by nights exist in the F/G world. There are many legit and good ones too! A F/G pool can be put in the ground and filled in a day, assuming inspections go ok. With concrete and electrical, fencing, etc., the entire installation can be completed inside a week with a good PB. What is this builder's schedule? I hope this helps. Your price seems too good. Maybe I am nuts, but maybe not. In any event, it is food for thought. Scott

We finally got started planting behind the raised bond beam! Talk about a lot of work! We had to build a retaining wall behind the curved portion of the wall with Castlerock, and those things are heavy! I haven't planted anything along the new sundeck, but hope to start that today. We also still have four Pygmy Date Palms for behind the raised bond beam, that we have to plant. Two will flank either side of the CI Date Palm for some added privacy. Here is a close up of the area we planted: I'm super pleased with the look of the ferns. We're lucky in that we only get about 1 hour of direct sun there a day, and it's from about 5:30PM - 6:30PM. Hopefully these Kimberly Queens will thrive there. I looked forever, before finding these bowls for the lower portions of the bond beam. There is a really good nursery, showcased in Southern Living, in a nearby town. They're my go-to place for hard-to-find Texas plants, and they have awesome decorative items. The bowls look amazingly like Oklahoma Wister flagstone! I've planted this combo before. It'll be white in the back (Angelonia), Liriopi in the middle as a perennial, and eventually the purple Scaevola and New Gold Lantana should spill over the front. With the Blue Plumbago in the back, the color combo should look nice. In about a month, it should be totally full. All I'll have to do is change out the annuals each season for color. The fence is in. Now all we have left is the flagstone inlay and the flagstone on the steps and we're done!

I was under the impression that Diamond Quartz was just the premixed product that the applicator mixes with Portland Cement to form Diamondbrite. We are going through the same process in Fort Worth, and have narrowed down to Diamondbrite or possibly Quartzscapes. Pebble Sheen and Pebble-Tec (and Stonescapes Mini-Pebble) were beautiful, but just a bit too rough for our little ones' feet (and swimsuits) in our opinion. Plaster is nice, but we'd like something a little sturdier after formerly owning a white plaster-finished pool. We ARE leaning toward Diamondbrite over Quartzscapes because of: 1) the premixing quality control issue you speak of; 2) the feel of the samples (Quartzscapes is a little rougher, though not bad); 3) our Pool Builder is ambivalent, but says his applicator has had good results with Diamondbrite and he is coming around on the product; 4) the color selection is more suited to what we're looking for (grey-green) than Quartzscapes - at least in the samples we got; 5) we've seen and felt Diamondbrite in a pool and the owner has nothing but positives to say about it; and 6) I've seen a few negative reviews here or at Trouble Free Pools (can't remember which) about problems with Quartzscapes blotching or not looking like the samples, which scares me even though I have a TON of confidence in our PB. Hope some of that helps. As for the light, from what I've read elsewhere, I'd guess 1 light should be enough to light a pool of that size, though it depends on what look you're going for. For instance, I expect some shadowy areas and attenuation at the edges of the pool at night, and even prefer it.

Old pool lights + new salt cell = rust stains on new surface

Rust means iron in the water of which there should be none. Its not hard to get test strips for. Are you on a well or municipal water? If discovered, a sequesterant is needed so stains can't form. They are expensive but Cu-Later pouches in the skimmer will pull the iron as well as copper out of the water in a couple weeks or so while the sequesterant prevents further staining. If the finish is affected, an ascorbic acid bath (vitamin C in mass) may be called for first to get it back in the water and be held captive by the sequesterant and then the pouches. Having an anode in the skimmer is good, especially if putting on at the pad is difficult. If the bond wire's potential for it isn't the same as the salt cells, i.e. there shouldn't be but maybe 1 ohm between the two, a small current can form. If the anode isn't connected to the bond, the stainless would attract the current because it is and the current has some place to go. With both connected, the current is absorbed by the anode which wears with time. Scott

Hi Chris, so sorry that has happened to you! What are the odds?? We had a ton of lightning where I am, and lots of wind, I was surprised to wake up and find everything in one piece. Do you know the electrician that worked on your pool? The reason I ask is that I'm sure if you contacted him/her directly the cost would be lower than if you have your PB contact them. I know a neighbor said who said they saved about $500 that way... Hope that helps! Marta

The electrician that did our pool (Village Electric) was who came and diagnosed the problem and fixed everything else. They said "Call the pool company to replace the lights." I am pretty sure the pool companies service department is going to be doing it.

We just resurfaced our pool and replaced our light that has never worked (about 12 years). So having any light was a plus and we don't use it that often. We ended up going with a ColorSplash LED because of the lightning threat. At $250 it is "relatively" inexpensive to replace.

Ok, so I have to say, I feel a little ripped off. I know a business is a business, but the Pool Company is charging me $1200 per light for the color logic (hopefully 4) lights + install. This seems a little high. The cheapest I found online was $410 and the most expensive was $594. Again, I understand this is a business, but I sort of feel like I walked in to buy a Honda Accord and got charged $60k for a 30k car, because the car dealership needs to make money.

The insurance company is covering the cost above the deductible, but this just doesn't seem right. Am I being too paranoid?

Our PB put 500 watt lights in our pool....on our pool list it say's LED lights...we caught it,but they would not put in LED, we talked to a different PB...he said they were about 1,100 for one...(we have two lights) he said we could get them for less on line...we ordered on line for 450...had them put in for 100...we did not want our PB to make more money on us....hope this helps...

Ok, so our pool company still hasn't "received" our Colorlogic 4 LED lights (which they are charging $1250 each!), so I am thinking, since most retailers are selling them from between $500-$600 with 2 day shipping, I could order them myself and just install them.

Any hints on how this is done? I suspect I would need to:

1) Turn the power off to the pool/lights
2) Go to the junction where the lights are connected (there are 2 of them, one for one light, one for the other)
3) Disconnect the light there
4) Go into the pool, unscrew the light
5) Attach a wire snake to the end of the light I just disconnected (maybe not necessary, but probably easier)
6) Pool the light out through the pool
7) Attach new light to snake
8) Pool light through
9) reconnect
1. Make sure everything is connected
2. Turn light back on
Is there anything I am missing? Is this something a home owner can/should do? I am not sure I can go all summer without pool lights and I can't wait for my pool company to "receive" these very expensive replacement lights...(well, it will save me $1200 + labor if I do it myself). Am I being a moron? Am I going to electrocute my family when I turn them on (well, I wouldn't turn them on with them in the pool, obviously).

The quality and price of pool lights vary considerably from country to country. Plastic pool lights and stainless steel pool lights also differ greatly in price. If you are looking for value for money, take a look at WAKING Lighting, a manufacturer from China, for their wide range of pool lights.
