I don't have an answer from a functional stand point, but do you have a Home Goods in your area? Last time I was at our local store, they had almost the exact same one you've shown from Kirkland's but the cost was quite a bit less. They also have a huge variety of storage pieces that you may like better and would work just as well.

I don't have a unit per se, but I've always had tons of bookcases and tons of baskets. I tend to practicality, so I've always used them rather than just putting them around decoratively. That = clutter to me, so why not put crap in the baskets?

I have some nice, squareish baskets from Target, Pier 1 & Home Goods that are perfect in my office for papers, mail, envelopes, general office supplies, etc. I also have several of a larger basket that serve as cat beds in several rooms. If they have their own basket, they stay off my computer & off my lap.

The thing about it, though, is there's no dust protection. Unless you cover them, of course.

Something to look at is how sturdy the baskets are. The 2nd one looks like it's got a metal frame. They stand up better. That's why I've never liked this trendy thing to put open shelving and baskets in kitchens. Humidity & wear can just disintegrate them. Depends on the basket, tho.

I hate to see you spend that much $$ on a basket holder. Could you look at a more functional, small book case & pick up a set of baskets -- matching or not -- at Marshall's? Thrift Stores (great sources!), Home Goods, Target & Pier 1? That way if you decided to blow off the basket thing down the road, you'd still have a functional piece of furniture. It can hold both books & baskets.

I really am a basket woman. But they have to be useful!

Lukk, no Homegoods here ... just Marshall's and TJ Maxx. I've already checked out both and come away empty handed.

Christine, you brought up a good point with the dust issue. And there's no shortage of kitty beds here. In fact, two have already landed in dh's office. ;)

After I posted this thread I found another possibility at Harverty's. This might be a lot more practical.

I added several in both of my DDs' rooms. I find it great for them to organize all of their stuff, just toss them in and pull them out when needed and the space looks visually less cluttered. Target has several nice baskets which are reasonably priced as does Michaels--esp. if you can buy them using one of their 40% off coupons. What I like about them over a cabinet with closed doors is it gives the room a more organic/textured look and breaks up all the wood if there are several other wood pieces already in the room.

Val, you've given me something else to think about. The room already has 3 wood pieces (desk and two bookcases). There's an old trunk in there and a black 2-drawer file cabinet. Woven wood shades have been ordered. I think I'll shop locally this week and see what else I can come up with.

Val, just wanted to say thanks again for your input. I ended up getting the 5-basket system from Kirkland's. Perfect fit!
