Son got a new job. Did I tell you?

I know I asked for you all to cross your fingers. He had two interviews the same day, one in Seattle and one in Tacoma, for the same job opening for the state of Washington. He said that the Seattle interview was awful. lol They never looked him in the eye, had some kind of attitude against him and were quite rude. There were 6 people across the table from him and only one man asked the questions. The others just stared at their papers. He got to the Tacoma one an hour and a half early and just got more prepared. He called afterwards and said he aced it. I guess he did, because they called and offered him the job and offered him a permanent job right a way. Out of 40 that they interviewed, they hired 12 and only 4 or 6 got permanent jobs! Yea! A pay raise for DH too, we were paying cobra insurance for the kid at 500 bucks a month! He now has benefits. woohoo!

The personal training job that he was doing is one of the reasons that he did so well in the interviews. He isn't a big talker. He learned so much as a personal trainer. he had to sell products, memberships and training sessions with his self. So he had to sell himself!~ It was an awesome learning experience. I'm very proud of him. In this economy, it's taken him a long time after graduating, but he kept plugging away! yea! And thanks for crossing your fingers!

Hooray! Congratulations to Ry and parents. The personal training job was what he needed to build his self-confidence and prepare him for a great opportunity. Working for the state is great, and probably offers good job security and benefits.

I've had both kinds (sinking stomach and great) of jobs, too, so I'm very, very happy for you. It is strange how sometimes the best jobs come from places we don't expect. It has happened to DH and me more than once. Congratulations!

"Absence makes the heart grow fonder" Not only is this true with kids, but when a parent is totally gone, the child can also fantasize about how wonderful the absent parent is. They can create the perfect parent in their mind if they want. I was 22 when I got together with my BF that had three kids. They were 1, 4 & 6. Their mom was on drugs and left and never came to see them but maybe once a year. I spent my 20's raising his kids without benefit of marriage and when it didn't work out, I was 29 and he wouldn't even let me talk to his kids anymore (unless I would come back to him). I had no legal rights. In a way, I spent my youthful years taking care of his kids while he worked on his career. (he went from a street deputy to detective Sergeant while I was with him, because my being there allowed him to work any shift and not worry about his kids) A house was purchased (in his name only) but I paid on it and helped with improvements but ended up walking away with nothing. (I sometimes think I was lucky to leave with my sanity intact) I get the impression that you think that you and he will have a wonderful little family, especially if the boy is calling you mom. I didn't think of that before gigglemonster said it, but if he is, I can certainly understand why BM would be jumping on you. I'm not saying she's right to, but I could understand that here's her little boy calling you mom and you are trying to make the family she was supposed to have with this 'prize' of a guy and not only that, but he's thinking the kid might forget about her. I'd be fighting mad too. My guess is that the mom is also fairly young, early 20's??? There's a lot of emotions and immaturity too that could be contributing to all the conflict. and I guarantee that she'd tell her little boy to stop calling you mom if he is. He is too young to understand why it's upsetting to anyone, he'd call you both mom if he loves you both... they don't know the difference or think about how the 'real' mom will feel. They are so innocent but that's being ruined by immature people that put him in the middle of all this conflict. I'm really sad for the little boy in this.

I think you're very right in keeping your options open & making the decision on which job to accept based on *your* needs & situation, weighing the pro/con of each offer carefully. Don't forget to look @ what the opportunities are offered for career growth & advancement. I have to say that their not interviewing you is a bit concerning to me. You deserve an interview... that doesn't strike me as being very professional. Part of a job interview is a chance for you to ask questions & get a feel for what kind of place it is to work for. Nevertheless, perhaps you are familiar enough with the facility & know other workers enough to not have that lapse be a barrier for you. Best wishes for today's interview. I hope you get an offer there too. Nothing like 2 or more offers to boost the confidence.

Hey Joanna- Congrats on the new job! Brody's a cutie, he looks like your DH. I love the captions too! Naked Nap time! lol I can't believe he's 14+ pounds already! Katie is so little-I worry she's not gaining enough. Katie rolls over, but she spends a lot of time on her tummy, so she has a crazy strong neck. Olivia was about 4-5 months when she did it. Good for him! He worked on developing his 'people skills', and it's paid off. Any government job has both 'up' and 'down' sides. Regardless, it's going to be on his resume; he's been *employed*! Hooray!

It sounds to me as though the first job hire had already been decided and they were just 'going through the motions' to comply with hiring laws.

I'm so happy for you both, Kat! It does seem our world dings the shyer and quieter among us, doesn't it? I have two shy kids and the other one has a much easier time with job interviews, etc. Getting the first job under his belt gave Ryan a good stepping stone, along with the experience of dealing with people. If I have to interview for another job one day, I'm going to have a verrrrrry hard time. I'll bet the Seattle job was a foregone conclusion and that they already had someone else nearly hired (inside the company,) before Ryan even went into the room. Sounds like they were just going through the motions and that was maybe why they couldn't look him in the eye.

We had to pay dd's Cobra for a year (before the age limit was raised,) and that was also a lot of money--I feel your pain on that one.

congratulations to Ryan! and to you too cause I know how much this means. You know he can do it and now he has a chance .
My son is working a new job now too, while still going to college. We are happy for him AND US. We pretty much turned off the cash a while back and hired him to work for a check. That wasn't ideal at all. He needed to work for someone else!
Getting that right job isn't easy, I'm so happy Ryan got one!

lol..when we were there we always called it stinky tacoma cause of the paper mills...guess it isn't anymore...(way back in 1988)

Congrats to Ryan! Sure helped that he became better able to present himself and talents as a result of the earlier experience.

My early rememberance of Tacoma is having seen pictures of the bridge over the Narrows, that fell after fluttering in a high wind ... many years ago.
