I have dialup.

The only other option is satellite. The slowest satellite is $60/month plus a pretty hefty setup fee - not worth it right now. It really isn't that much better than what I have now - not at 3x the price anyway.

I do have a good dialup connection though.

We have dail up. BUT not by choice. It really is sloooow.

Dial up here, only other choice is satellite and can't afford that. My kids, when they visit, get very upset at how slow it is and I just tell them that it teaches us to be patient. lol

Sometimes, when it's slower than others, I just have a magazine nearby to glance at while waiting. Most of the time it's not too bad.

Until 3 months ago, I had dial-up. Often, I connected at 50 KB/S which was fast enough for texting and email with limited attachment sizes. It's the graphics that bogged my connection down, and forget about a video.

Also, after re-installing Win XP, there were megabytes of updates to install. These took forever and sometimes collected errors on the lengthy loads. Same for the anti-virus software. With DSL, these downloads are a snap.

I paid for DSL by not re-subscribing to the dial-up and canceling the second phone line. With filters on each phone, I can surf and use the phone at the same time.

One caveat: In my neighborhood, one should be within 2 miles of the telephone exchange building for DSL.

Satellite DSL is too expensive.

As of this time Satellite I don't think is available to me, and if it were, we live in a woods and the dish would have to be installed quite a way out back near the garden area, so don't know how that would work with that much cable running to the house. One daughter has it, our oldest daughter has dial up and the 3rd daughter has DSL. At my husband's business he has some sort of high speed internet connection. He doesn't even know how to use his computer so our son in law uses it to look things up they need.

DSL is not available here either. Usually my high connection is around 28.8kbs. It is normally around 26 something. After it being even much lower than that and having a hum on my phone line, the phone company eventually fixed the problem down the road from us.

We don't have another phone line at home anymore. Yes, trying to watch a video, not always possible.

Dial up here, by choice. We could have high speed but it would have to be with our cable co. & i don't like them. Besides it would be a LOT more expensive. I pay abt $13.00 a month and what i really like is if I have any problems with the computer I can call tech help and the guy lives in my town. My late son always gave me hard time about how slow dial up is and I always told him....I'm retired, I have time! Dottie

And too cheap for satellite.

As I've said before, I'm trying to chop household chores into about 30 second chunks, so that I can do them instead of twiddling my thumbs.

Asked for advice on that issue here ... didn't get much result.

There is no cable out here in our woods. We are WAY too far from town to ever get DSL. Satellite is possible but no one who has had it out here, liked it at all. I thought I was doomed to have dial-up forever until I learned about Axcess Mobile thru my cell-phone provider. My cell phone hooks up the computer via a USB cable and I have much faster connections, I can watch most videos, download updates and photos quickly, upload things quickly, and just generally do almost everything a cable connection can do. It's like DSL speeds, I'm told.

To justify the cost of the cell phone and hook-up, I got rid of both land lines, our ISP and our pay-as-you-go cell phones. I have unlimited internet access for $24.99 and we have 2 cell phones. Cost per month is $107, including taxes. That's about the same as I was paying before when you added everything together, but I now have high-speed internet and never have to pay for any long-distance calls.

So if you really want something faster and can get cell service at your home, I would recommend you call your carrier and see what they offer. I am SO glad that I did!

For the past year I've had high speed wireless and love it!

My dial up wasn't too bad, but can't compare to what I have now. I pay $30 more than I did before and if I got rid of my land line that would equal it out. My son likes to take his laptop outside to use and I can take mine out on the front porch. It's so nice not to be tied to a plug in the wall!

it's been atleast 10 yrs we've had cable modem, i could not live w/ anything else lol. 2-3yrs before that we had DSL i'd never even go back to that, i would pay up for satellite which is close to what we pay for cable modem. i'm looking into going to sprint aircard which i've had for work in the past, if we can get it cheaper that brighthouse roadrunner.

my DH attends college full time and uses more than 1G a week to view some of his lectures online and we must be on atleast cable modem for that. it has 15 minutes lag time to view, so if you don't have medium grade cable modem (high DSL level) you can not watch the courses and get no credit for it. basically you can not be a college student these days w/o a fast internet connection. my DH has had to take exams online, submit 4G projects, all homework is done online, view classes as well as participate via webcam in courses. our whole lives involve the internet, we bank, manage investments, communicate, do research, alot of our shopping is online etc... we have multiple laptops w/ printers & 2 desktops as servers w/ wireless everything, it's the only way to live ~ liz
