A philanderer is a womanizer. So this seems an odd choice to name a child:

It's a Greek name meaning friend of man.

I love this stuff! Every time one of you Ancestry members comes up with exciting facts from the past, I'm tempted to spring for a membership myself. But it's not as though I have genealogy skills, and it's not as though I'm on top of my other projects. Anyway..... Dbfirewife, I took your good suggestion and linked the three children to their parents this morning. I don't know why I didn't do it when I first put them on FindAGrave; I always link. I've noticed that some memorial managers ignore infants completely, and sometimes other children as well. It's as if the little ones don't count because they didn't produce children of their own. But I feel strongly that the babies deserve mention, and their loving parents who erected the stone would certainly want that for them. Joann, so Eva worked in the Hawley silk mill. I know it well. In fact, I have a connection. The enormous silk mill, which now houses a community college and some boutiques, had on the property a separate building that held about $250,000 worth of cocoons (a princely sum in those days). About 5 years ago the owners of Hawley's best restaurant converted it into an upscale coffee house, and during the planning phase hired my daughter-in-law to manage it. She was the perfect choice......not only does she have a degree in business management, but she and my son have always roasted and ground their coffee beans. :-)

Alisande, I can't remember the name of the family or the date of the children's deaths. But, I wrote it down somewhere -- I just have to find my note. When the 1900 Census was taken (in this case on 11 June 1900), the following was entered for the Hiram T. Hudson family: Hiram T., born Feb 1840 in Pennsylvania, age 60, married for 39 years. Both parents were born in New York. Angeline, born Oct 1843 in Pennsylvania, age 56, married for 39 years. Mother of 12 children, 3 of which were still living. Both parents were born in Connecticut. Ellsworth, born June 1861 in Pennsylvania, age 38, single. Charles, born Feb 1879 in Pennsylvania, age 21, single. Clarence, born June 1883 in Pennsylvania, age 16, single. (On the actual Census page, Ellsworth's name is written as Elsworth.) ----- Jim, Yes, it is common in Italy for a photo of the deceased to be attached to the headstone. Also, many Italians who were born in Italy but died in the United States have a photo attached to their headstone. I actually really like that tradition. Sometimes it's the only photo their decendants ever get to see of them.

I just made contact with a guy who takes pics of cemeteries and he has taken over 87,000 photos for one huge cemetery alone. I actually just went back and read his letter to me to check the number. I had requested some photos for very old headstones and my request was granted almost immediately. Turns out he is in the process of adding all the information for his pictures on find a grave. He just hadn't gotten to my family's photos but had them on his computer. He just doesn't take one photo but will get very close to get dates and then the whole headstone, family plot shots etc. I've sent him family information so that it can be added to the find a grave site. He even made a special trip out to take an additional photo of a Confederate Solider Marker that was barely seen in one of his photos. He brushed it off with a small paint brush (no cleaning product) and took a photo of it. Alisande - I have a couple headstones that I want to post for you to see. One has phrase "Now we know" on it and another has a strange symbol. I'll have to go through my family tree photos to find them. I just read an article from the County where I grew up. One cemetery brought in a herd of goats to eat away the brush and debris so that old graves could be found. One part of it is well kept but I guess the other part has been neglected for years. I have family members at that cemetery, so I will be interested in finding out what is found. Evidently, it took 3 weeks for the goats to eat through all the growth.

Our searches have shown that consort was an old term for spouse. The death date on this stone is 1821 and is in the period when that term was used. This term is rarely found on stones newer than 1850. We first thought that consort may have applied to a common law marriage, but found that the term may apply to either a common law or regular marriage. Common law marriages were present on the frontier in the 1700s and up to 1850. In some cases, no clergy was available and a formal court house may not have been in existence. Some states had resolutions to cover common law marriages, Typically, if a man and woman had lived together as a married couple for 7 years, then the law considered them married.

Well, the last name is Collins....seems to fit all of the ones I know. (I am married to a Collins...if anyone doesn't know.) I heard someone calling their kid in Walmart one day. His name was Phallus. Maybe they didn't spell it that way...but I thought...hmmm, with all the names, I think I could think of one better than that.

was over at another site and we were just talking about spelling and names...like my mom..her full name was georgia blanche, but those 2 aunts passed and she became plain "b"...

I had an uncle whose middle name was spelled, Phlandor. Close to the name you found.

Apparently, Philander was used more in the 1800s than today. I have seen this name in old county histories. For example, there was a man named Philander Gould who was a prominent settler in Edwards co, IL. (My sister married a Gould who is a descendant of this man.)

Philander is different from Philanderer. See the extra er?

We have a road near our house called Hodgson Road. I can't tell you how many people call it Hodgkins (as in disease). There is no "K" in it! And it ends in "son" in "ins".

An older family friend introduced himself by his surname only. His given name was Horace and his middle initial was "P".

When you name a child, try to think of how kids will twist it or rhyme it.

Of course I do, Neesie. And did. But the extra er indicates that a philanderer is one who . . . philanders.
