Fun NYTimes Article on Southern Heirloom Bulbs
Comments (3)I've placed an order with them from reading this article. I ordered oxblood lilies, red spider lily, and some jonquils. I'm all for supporting Texas companies. Too many of them are way north, and their stuff struggles to survive down here in Texas....See MoreRemember the Bishop children's gravestone?
Comments (19)I love this stuff! Every time one of you Ancestry members comes up with exciting facts from the past, I'm tempted to spring for a membership myself. But it's not as though I have genealogy skills, and it's not as though I'm on top of my other projects. Anyway..... Dbfirewife, I took your good suggestion and linked the three children to their parents this morning. I don't know why I didn't do it when I first put them on FindAGrave; I always link. I've noticed that some memorial managers ignore infants completely, and sometimes other children as well. It's as if the little ones don't count because they didn't produce children of their own. But I feel strongly that the babies deserve mention, and their loving parents who erected the stone would certainly want that for them. Joann, so Eva worked in the Hawley silk mill. I know it well. In fact, I have a connection. The enormous silk mill, which now houses a community college and some boutiques, had on the property a separate building that held about $250,000 worth of cocoons (a princely sum in those days). About 5 years ago the owners of Hawley's best restaurant converted it into an upscale coffee house, and during the planning phase hired my daughter-in-law to manage it. She was the perfect choice......not only does she have a degree in business management, but she and my son have always roasted and ground their coffee beans. :-)...See MoreSome gravestone pictures I took this weekend
Comments (12)Couple of things I forgot to mention...... A large area of one of these cemeteries is covered in poison ivy. I didn't realize it until I'd been walking through quite a bit of it. I'll the person in charge of the cemetery to let them know. It would be an easy matter to spray it now, before it gets completely out of control. Also, I came across a gravestone for a father and his two daughters. No mention of the wife. Both daughters lived into their forties, and both died in the same year. No detailed dates were mentioned, so it's possible they died at the same time. Stones like this make me want to hear the whole story....See MoreGravestone photographers, how are we doing?
Comments (13)I, too, get frustrated when family members are not linked. Especially when the husband's and wife's name are both on the stone, and the contributor creates a memorial page for each and uploads the same photo to both pages. Why not link them? It's sooo easy! I have submitted (probably literally) hundreds of editing requests to link family members, whether I know the decedents or not. It just seems like the right thing to do. Thankfully, my requests have been taken care of. Also, with the relatively new availability of birth and death certificates for Pennsylvania, I have submitted bunches and bunches of edit requests to add the pertinent info to existing memorial pages. I keep thinking to myself that these contributors must have an interest (to some degree, anyway) in genealogy, otherwise they wouldn't be out there taking and uploading the headstone photos. Wouldn't THEY want to get as much (complete/correct) info as possible when they look up a grave site for one of their ancestors?...See MoreRudebekia
