This sounds like a complicated way to do a round robin.

I'd love to be involved in one, but not this year. I've heard of making a center block, and each next person adds a pieced or appliqued border of her choice that compliments the center block.

I'm too busy right now, but maybe in the future. Sorry Vicky, but I agree that your plan is too complicated. I think Cheryl's way makes more sense. Actually I might agree to do it if one gets going. I think you could have a nice round robin with as few as 5 or 6 people.

I think a rr is a great idea but I would prefer a different method. Have you heard for row robin? Everyone makes a row and adds it on.

I like the idea of a row robin, also.

The way I suggested is not going to work for us here. I would go for a row robin. Does anyone know how they work? It's got to be pretty much the same in moving them around once a month. Maybe Red would like to reinstate her Log robin?

Our Round Robin group of friends in my guild has done a Row Robin in the past. It is better if the "owner" of the row specifies a row size (width and height) and a theme if she desires, such as springtime, fall, cats & kittens, kitchen/food designs, teatime, etc.

Each swapper should include enough fabric in her package to allow for a good selection to make the rows. More fabric is better, and half yards and fat quarters are good sizes. Seven fabrics is better than three. A traveling card should state the theme, size, and any pertinent information such as "please do not add any orange to the row you are making for me!" or "I want my rows to have a wintry feel - so please stick to winter blues, grays, whites, etc."

You can see by my row quilts that small rows that are not so tall are better than great big rows, then the owner can add more rows if she wants.

I've not heard of sending along fabric; that sounds like it would get expensive.

I did a round robin a year ago with some sewing machine collector friends. We made a center medallion and then just counted on the other participants to do a good job with their rounds. Some of us chose to include some fabric (never more than a yard) with our centers, others didn't. I was really impressed with the end results. Take a look.

Absolutely fantastic, Annie! What great work you all did! Some of the quilts I love for their colors, and others for the ingenuity of the borders people added. The one with all the LOL's made me laugh when I realized that the black winding line appliqued over the colorful border was really a computer cord! (It was cute, too, the way the computer in the center somewhat resembled the sunbonnet on the girl.)
Each participant only had to do one round of each size, right?
But I'm afraid I can't commit to a round robin just now--too much else going on in our lives. I hope anyone who does do it will let us see pics, though!

Our round robin was set up so that we each made a medallion and then the blocks were sent in rotation. So, I did the first round on the first center I got, the second on the second center, etc...

We did find that we needed to extend our time allowed as the rounds got bigger. I think we took one month for rounds one and two, two months for rounds three and four, and three months for round five. Most of us ended up with very large quilts--mine is nearly full-sized and Judy's and Kelly's are queens.

You can limit your medallion size and border widths to keep them more manageable but we are all good friends and decided to let anything go.
