diy-ers - how much can wood putty really cover?

Hello DIYers!

I'd really like to change my cabinet hardware from pulls to knobs, or at least move the pulls to a better spot on the doors (they're a little high up on the doors instead of close to the bottom corners).

That would leave behind two exposed screw holes in my lovely mid-90s oak doors.

Is wood putty up to the task of making those holes undetectable, or will it always look like I have two little holes filled with some kind of brown spackle?

I realize this is yet another argument for painting my cabinets white, but I am just too scared to undertake such a massive project (massive for me...no garage or basement...gotta paint outside...gotta have lots of good weather and free babysitting...gotta be done by big family party in May...yada yada...).

Thanks!
