I Bought A New Sewing Machine

I hadn't planned on it, but Walmart had this little Singer Pixie sewing machine marked down to $30 so I got one. I don't know if I will keep it or not. I have not even looked over the features on the box. My knee is really hurting today so I don't feel like being up and moving around so much. I really need another total knee replacement, but don't want to go through that again. Anyway back to the sewing machine. It is rather small and I thought it might be easy to take with me if I need to take one somewhere. I have a lot of sewing machines. I will see tomorrow maybe what I think of this one. Do any of you have sewing machines? I am sure you do.

I do have lots of sewing machines - 3 antiques, a Pfaff with the embroidery unit, an industrial Consew, two sergers, and a long-arm quilting machine. I service most of them myself.

The thing that disturbs me about this machine is that there are no replacement parts - if something goes wrong, after the very short warranty period, you're completely out of luck. Service is simply not available. It IS cheap, but they also made it to be disposable, and that irritates me.

I have decided after looking at the box to return it when I go back to Walmart. I didn't open it. I too have an older Pfaff model 2221 (I think), a neat little black Singer 99, an old treadle machine I think it is a New Home, it has a nice old oak cabinet that closes up in the front, it was a Christmas gift from our son one year, a Janome with some built in stitches, 3 Kenmores, pretty new, and some odds and ends of machines I have picked up at rummages over the years. I paid $15 for my Pfaff and $5.00 for the Singer 99.

I really need to get my sewing room straightened up. Too many illnesses and things going on in the family.

I am a sewer when I have to be.....meaning I sew, not my favorite hobby but can do it if push comes to shove which it has alot along the years. Then I really get hooked on it & sew away. When my little girl was a toddler all the way thru 7 yrs. I made her an outfit, bought her an outfit. Made matching bows & hair scrunchies also. She was the best dressed kindergarten student in the class. ha! After buying an old house , we fixed everyroom up and I sewed my way around the house with swags,other WT's, pillows, table runners, napkins, etc. After selling & building, I have made a couple of WT.....DD's bathroom one & craftroom , small pillow for guestroom bed , but hired the Wt's I wanted out to a very professional lady who does a no less than perfect job. I even took for my DR an off the shelf WT & made it alittle more custom looking by scrunching the top to make it look soft & floppy then hanging on short rods. I want to update my daughter's bathroom with plain white tab tops, cutting off the tabs & replaceing with lime green ribbon hanging down & sewed. I have an inspiration photo. YOu could even use the fusing web for that projects if need be. Good luck with learning...I took some shadow embroidery lessons at one of the sewing places here. Even JR. college probably offer things like that maybe. I had to take classes in JR high & high school.......it was one of those things I thought I would never use but have! Bonnie

Thanks all to the warm welcome. I was the manager of a huge fabric store - for alot of years - in the 70's (polyester double knit days if anyone dates back that far). I had started a quilt with bicentennial (1976) fabrics and Holly Hobby prints. I have saved it all these years, and no it will never be finished! Methods, and supplies and technology and the wealth of information and help available to us thru the internet has made me decide to start quilting now; I always said that was my goal when I retired. And of course, I have to jusify my new sewing machine. Annie - I forgot the Sailrite machine for heavy canvas & the serger in my machine count. I've seen pictures of your machines and sewing room - the envy of all who sew! It made me clear space in my office for my sewing machine cabinet yesterday. Teresa- yes a familiar, nice person is always great. *waving back atcha* Thanks everyone again - I have paid attention to your suggestions and hints in other posts - some very old, and you all would be pleased at what a good student I've been.

Pins...remove or sew over?

It all depends upon the machine and year it was made. My Singer 6235 is made to sew over pins and says so in the manual. The old Lady Kenmore sewed over pins like a trouper as did the old Singers we used in junior high. We used fine silver dressmaker pins without a problem. The 6235 freaks out if it sees a horse-needle quilting pin. The older machines do not have a problem with pins and older sewers like me pin baste, press, sew, press to get through the seam faster and more accurately rather than sitting there sewing a bit, adjust, sew a bit, it's off so rip, repeat as necessary. I prefer to spend time pinning, fitting in, basting, press, sew, remove pins, press than ripping out because things weren't secured in place beforehand. My humble opinion is you get a more accurate seam pinning or basting Â½" seams first--a little more work, a lot less ripping because of inaccuracies that always show up later where you don't want them to show up. Ripping out on dark fabric is no joy to do outside the fact you have to rip in the first place. Everyone knows I hate to rip. The newer machines do not cope with pins, period. The work-around is to pin perpendicular as always, just make sure the sharp end of the pin is to the right of the seam line and out of the line of fire. This makes it easier to sew an accurate seam quickly without constantly stopping to remove pins. The new Kenmore and Singer CE-200 love this method because they don't sew over pins, I'm happy because I can pin and get accuracy.

Singer is no longer a good machine so I would not go there. Why don't you visit several dealers and spend the afternoon taking a class on anything. That way you can use a machine for 3 hours for $5 or $10 and see if you like it. Since you are a new sewer, what you like and need might not be the same as the preferences of someone who has sewn for years. Sit and try several machines -- and not just for 15 minutes. How easy is it for you to change threads? Will the machine jam if you start sewing at the end of the fabric or do you need to use a "cheater". Do you have up and down needle buttons. Do you have a clear bobbin cover? What about speed control? Will the machine thread the needle for you? Best wishes,

I have a Janome.

when we moved here I sold my Brother to my brother.
Boy, do I miss that machine.
I also have a serger that is out of order at the moment.
Need to take it to get it serviced.

I just finished a king size quilt top.

I have a Singer I bought in the 70's. I cannot imagine a sewing machine for $30. Probably not worth keeping, but it sounds like fun to have anyway.

I've got 3 Singers, an Elna and a Pfaff....all but the Pfaff are regular sewing machines - the Pfaff is a serger. A neighbor put out a machine with chair and cabinet on his lawn last weekend with a big free sign. I of course had to investigate -- one very dirty Bernina but it had all the attachments and loads of bobbins.......no one even bothered with it (I'm now thinking I should have gotten the bobbins at least) and it went to the dump. How sad.

Too bad you let the machine go to the dump :( If I see a free machine I get it, even it is not working. Sometimes just a bit of a tune up or cleaned up it will work. Sometimes the parts are good, like the pressure foot. Last year oldest daughter gave me a machine someone gave her. It looks pretty nice. Right now I can't remember the name of it. I have not even tried it out :( I must do that, put it on my to do list!
