Stearns and Foster Freedom Pkwy, mattress set

Seriously considering this mattress and am interested if anyone has this mattress and their opinions. It is in the Stearns and Foster estate line. Of course, shopping for a mattress is like shopping for carpet. The stores assign their own names to the mattresses. I understand Sleepy's has this mattress under the name Market Street or Market Square.

It is $2499 for the set and the prices are set, so not much haggling the price like you might be able to do with Simmons, Sealy and Serta. The stores have a 10% off internet coupon that can be applied for a minimal savings.

I thought Stearns and Foster was part of the Sealy company.

Yes, they bought Stearns several years ago, but, according to Stearns, they maintain a separate facility and still make an upscale bed. They are more expensive than the Sealy beds. You can feel the difference, too. I finally had my husband check out the bed since I had been doing the shopping alone. He is about 185# and could feel the difference in the lesser quality beds immediately, while I could tell a slight difference due to my lighter weight - I am 114 pounds.

WhiteRiverSooner, first be sure you have a California King. It is just an oddball size, 72 x 84. Eastern King gives most folks under 6'4" greater sleeping surface being 76 x 80. Cal King helps out the basketball player types who may have toes hanging off the bed. Then make sure actually get a new mattress. Law tag speech here. Don't buy one w/o it. There are a ton of rebagged used name brand mattresses circulating sharing their bedbugs with each other. I agree you can always add a topper to a firm mattress. The following is true for you and kashka_kat. Be realistic in what you need. All but the firmest traditional innerspring mattresses have a rough time with Big Folks. And yes it is possible to get to firm of a mattress which will kink up your shoulders all night long whenever you are on your side in particular. The foam mattresses are a feel I love but like politicians folks either love or hate them. Pocketed coils offer the best of both worlds. Try a good tight firm pocketed coil bed. We have a wrapped coil unit on display which really shows how they can conform to even that arm wrapped under your pillow. Get a posturized one and you can probably get a fairly soft coil to work under a larger body. I'll stop running my mouth now.

I hope I can help since I spent over 1 year researching mattresses. Never buy any pillowtop because basically it's memory foam on top and will break down and form lumps in the top. If you want a good mattress buy one and add on a latex topper for softness. There is company called Shifman, which has been around for ages, and you can still flip it over. Most mattresses don't allow you to turn them over anymore. Sterns and Foster makes decent mattresses. Basically they change names to prevent you from comparison shopping. I bought a organic latex mattress from Savvy Rest. They are located in Va. but have stores where you can try them out. You order according to your configuration. It's not the normal type of mattress but basically you design your layers and you can have a configuration that is good for your needs. The latex layers lie inside a well made zip top cover. Is it ideal? Not really all that I dreamed of. We had our last mattress for 32 years and we were used to a firm mattress. Initially, my back was still sore cause it's a matter of getting your muscles used to something different. Latex (natural) lasts forever and isn't hot to sleep on. The organic part was a plus, but not necessarily a necessity. Some of the Sealy brands are not natural latex and some stores sell latex mattresses that aren't fully latex, but an inch or two on top and they call it latex. It's really a matter of personal taste but difficult because it's takes awhile before you really know if it's comfortable and by then you can't return it.

Susan, oh speaking of having your bed plugged into electricity, that reminds me of something else that happened. The adjustable foundation plugs into the wall and we had a very bad electrical storm here several months ago that hit close to our house and came in and fried some of our electricial/electronic things. It caused the "massage" (i.e., vibrate) funtion of the adjustable bed to go on. We couldn't get it to go off with the remote, so we unplugged it. The bed then (completley unplugged from the wall) continued to vibrate softly for about an hour, on its own. Leggett & Platt (the manufacturer) told me this was powered by the two 9-volt batteries in the bed, that serve some purpose I don't remember. But can you imagine being sound asleep and all of a sudden thunder, then vibration? And though manufacturer said electricity could not have come into the bed, I have my doubts. We did get it fixed since it's kind of handy for watching TV, but don't like to sleep with it plugged in!

We purchased the Simmons Beautyrest Black Helena Pillowtop back in Dec 2006. I truly loved it for the first few months, and then it started with the body indentations. I thought the indents were from the mattress cover, so took that off, no change, turned mattress, nothing. It progressively got worse that we had 2 ditches in this King size. I called Boston Store Furniture Gallery, 20 months into owning it. Major back and neck problems set in. They sent out an inspector and sure enough, 1 Â½ inch body indents and the sides of the mattress were busting out. Inspector told me that his report would reflect a defective mattress. I asked his opinion of how many defective mattresses he seeÂs and he said "off the record" to strongly fight for a replacement but to stay clear of this Helena as he has seen many defective mattresses. Simmons sold me on the single coils for less movement on the mattress as I flip a lot. In my opinion, those single coils are receiving a lot of strain. In order to get a replacement under the warranty, it has to be equal or greater than what I had spent. Well, I really donÂt want to get another Helena due to the problems I had on this one. The salesperson hasnÂt heard any of these complaints and actually had 3 other couples trying out the Helena as we spoke. She has sold over 100 of these w/o any other complaints. I have 21 days to decide if I want it replaced, or to try another mattress. She wants me to try it again, but I hesitate. Due to what I spent on the Helena, I would have to go with a Tempurpedic type bed but donÂt think that will work for us. Anyone else having problems with the Helena indentations? Suggestions on a Simmons or Sealy plush mattress?

I just bought a Stearns & Foster Estate set at the Macy's outlet in LA. I relied on testing and on the site I've linked below. Despite being a paid ad site, the blogger/expert seems to know his stuff about construction, number of coils etc. I wanted a firm, and while it's only 1 sided (as they all are today), it's firm. I think the quality is excellent. I greatly preferred the S & F to the Simmons Black line.

While I don't get the guarantee, I paid under $800 for the set (since I used a credit card, I'm protected by them.) My 2nd choice was buying from Costco, since they're take it back any time.

we bought our s&f mattress 9 years ago(they had the same policy then too---no real sales on s&f) and it has held up great and i still love it....very comfortable.

We purchased a S&F about 3-4 years ago and just replaced it yesterday. One salesperson told me S&F was bought by Sealy a few years ago and the quality decreased at that time. Ours developed the "sinkholes" and I'm thrilled to have it gone. Having said that, the delivery men who brought the new bed said they can always identify a S&F because the boxspring is so heavy (they disposed of te old bed). Kind of wish we'd kept it for the wood which we could hae used for projects.

I have a 5 yr old S&F set that I paid about $2500. for back then. It has not held up - sinkholes so bad now that I'm having back problems. We got a cushion firm and all the cushion foam does is pop back up to disguise the sinkholes. The rep came out last week to check it for warranty and it didn't meet the 1.5 inch depth requirement for replacement. Don't know if I would ever pay this much for a mattress again but I do know I won't be buying a S&F. BTW, the rep said they get the least amount of complaints for Simmons.

We bought a Stearns & Foster mattress in January and returned it before the 60 day trial was up. It developed deep impressions after just a few weeks.

Google them and read the comments. I wish I had done that first.

We now have a Beautyrest mattress, the one they drop bowling balls on. So far so good but I'm keeping my eye out for impressions.
