After having more tests last Monday, she, my son and her sister met with her oncologist today. The news wasn't good. The cancer is growing again, and she is in a lot of pain. They are going to try some different chemo, starting next week, and thankfully they have upped her pain meds. She could use another round of good thoughts and prayers from her KT friends. Dottie, I'm sorry your family is going through this. I used to (many years ago) work in a pathology/histology lab at a major VA hospital, running an electron microscope. The reason path reports take so much time is that it really does take a day or more to process the tissue, to prepare it for analysis. It then must be thin-sectioned, stained, photographed, and then finally analyzed by the pathologist. Pathologist might then order more sections from a different area - yada, yada. They aren't trying to prolong your anxiety - really they aren't. But the tissues we prepared for EM took up to two days to infiltrate with the fixative, and then the resin needed to be cured before we could make the thin sections. Some tumors are instantly identifiable as malignant, but not all are. I know you are anxious for the diagnosis, but an accurate diagnosis is much more important than a quick one. I'll be lighting a candle for your family tonight!

Oh shoot, that's the nuts. If I may be bossy, ask her and Dok to be a squeaky wheel in trying to find the chemo that will work. It seems like there are new ones all the time, and while I know that some are targeted for certain types of cancer, it's a good idea to inquire and push for a newer one if the older ones aren't working well. Glad to hear the doctor upped her pain meds; the side effect is a dopey and sleepy feeling but I'm sure this is preferable to pain. I'll pray for you all, Dotmom.

Not good to hear this news. My prayers go out to what I hear from here, is a wonderful lady, and her family. May she be blessed with the strength to contiue the fight, and that she will soon be back to a healthy and normal lifestyle. There is strenghth in numbers and I'm sure the number of prayers coming from the KT will be heard.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dear DFN.
You are always so understanding and uplifting to everyone here (me, included). I hate that your family has to go thru this.
