The type of shower depends on the age of the Mother and the amount and ages of people who attend; I hosted a baby shower for a coworker last year. It was coed so it was not too silly. A couple of things I did: I had a book set up on my desk a little out of the way and asked everyone to put in good thoughts or suggestions for the mother. I then had beads and string and people put the beads on the string to represent good thoughts and the Mother wore it (or had it in her hand) during delivery. It was a big hit. We didn't play games as it was a big group and most people wanted to socialize. I just had guess the baby food and how many pieces of candy in the bottle but they were off to the side ie people saw the items and guessed as they passed through; it wasn't everyone sit down and guess. Unwrapping the gifts takes quite a bit of time and we had cake. Time-wise it worked out well. Good luck.

Perhaps the difference between "couple shower" and "couples shower" is a matter of the ear.....they sound very much the same.....actually it's a lot more difficult to say "couples shower"....so the error was likely mine. And also men are invited....both men who are part of a "couple" and single men friends....with or without a date. Anyhow I think it's a lovely custom....the party given fro my daughter at a friends house on a lovely summer evening, featured jugs of wine set in ice filled copper boilers around the yard and the deck, and similar onef filled with beer. Dinner was a chicken casserole...probably a salad and rolls....don't remember dessert but if I know the friends who gave the shower, probably wedding cake. There were about 80 people invited and each couple was asked to contribute a small amount and the hostesses bought a lovely Wallace silver coffee service. tray coffee pot, tea pot, cream and sugar. It sits on my daughter's buffet server and is used for Christmas Easter, Birthdays and other occasions I am sure. I don't know how the custom got started but it's been the custom among my circle of friends. I have given several, one time it was a back yard hamburger cook out and the gift was a very nice grill, another time it was a fancy cocktail buffet for 80 people ( my house was bursting!) and the gift was the bride's china...not all of it but a couple of place settings of Lenox, another time we did a garden party with oven fried chicken potato salad, beans slaw and strawberry shortcake and the gift was a piece of antique oak furniture. All the parties were given by 2 ior 3 couples and we did all the cooking. We had lots of fun! Linda C

Everyone gets a little toy pacifier (or some other item) on a string to hang around their neck and if they say the word 'baby' the first person to catch them say it confiscates their pacifier (and any others that person collected from anyone else). The person with the most pacifiers at the end wins. Identify the baby food - take the labels off and number them and the person who guesses the most right wins. Bring out a tray or basket of baby supplies for a short length of time then take it away. The person who can list the most items after the items leave the room wins. Trivia - either general baby questions or questions about the mom-to-be. The person who gets the most right wins. Word Scramble - pre-print a list of scrambled baby items and the person who unscrambles the most wins.

Grumpy young woman here. I dislike showers. Honestly, the very idea of a baby shower has always seemed offputting to me. Why am I buying your baby stuff again? And if I do, I just grudingly send the gift and forgo the shower. Same thing with bridal showers. The inane games, the precious weird food, and the utter tedium of sitting and watching a grown person opening gifts forever. Not fun. I stopped going to all non family showers years ago. HOWEVER, I appreciate the fact that lots people enjoy them and the tradition,especially the mother/bride to be. I am no help regarding activities that may make it fun. I wish you luck with that. Better yet,maybe have NO silly games and make it a fun party. I think I (and many others) would enjoy showers if they did not include some pushy person or persons INSISTING that everyone take part in the games and activities instead of letting people enjoy the company. The showers in my family have always been game free,with great food and no sitting and watching people opening gifts. They were enjoyable get togethers.As Kathy mentioned, lots of people make requests for books with special messages written in them,including the last mother to be that sent me an invite to her shower. (I did not go, but I sent her a giant box of diapers, another of wipes, and 6 or 7 different baby shampoos, soap, etc. ) I did not send the book though. This was a coworker and since it is unlikely I will be close with or even have much if any contact with the child, i was unsure what message to write. My only advice would be to at least make sure the food is good. Its the least one can do for people who show up and participate in such an event. I have never had good food at a shower,except those that i did the cooking for. ;) Maybe have a raffle for a pretty gift basket or some other useful door prize rather than some cutesy trinket for everyone that likely will go to waste. I was going through a closet the other day and came upon a stash of useless cutesy garbage that i got at showers. In the trash it went. And with all things in life, I believe that the more pink one can have around,the better. A baby shower for a girl seems the perfect excuse. And sparkles. Never enough sparkles. And hearts. Pink sparkly hearts always bring a smile. To me anyway. I have seen very cute wreaths made of pacifiers and bottles that were cute. The aforementioned coworker dipped into MY stash of mod podge that I use for my halloween bottles to create very pretty glittery bottles that she turned into centerpieces for her shower. Is it an autumn affair??? Paint some pumpkins pink! Use them to mark the house. Instead if tying balloons to the mailbox, tie em to the pink pumpkins. Or, if you know the babies name, use tiny pumpkins. Paint them pink and then paint her name on them, one letter each pumpkin. Bottom line, pink.
