I favor a mantel. lol. I thought you were going to get one? You can have so much fun decorating mantels because nothing's permanent and you can change decor for the seasons.

Love everything else you've done & chosen, but I have to side with your wife on this one. I dont think it adds to the room.

I think it could work. Can you add a mantel shelf to the fireplace? I think that the picture would be nice above a shelf with a few objects that pick up some of the painting's colors.

Art is very personal. I don't care for it, but that isn't the issue. As far as working in the room, art is not supposed to match your furniture or colors necessarily, so that doesn't matter. But I will say that a large piece in a prominent place should be something that you both can enjoy.

When are you replacing the ceiling fan/light fixture?

Just re-read my post, and realize it asked when you were replacing the fixture, rather than with what. Duh - I should be sure to engage my brain before typing, eh?

If you like matching artwork to wall color it works. I'd rather buy something I really liked.

I would be inclined to paint the fireplace a darker shade of your wall color so the art doesn't jump out at you so much.

Art is a VERY personal thing and if you love it, keep it. For me, it feels just a tad bit too 80s, with the teal and the kind of fabric batik design. I also don't think it does much for your room, if that's what you were going for.

Thanks for all the responses..it's going back to Pier 1 tomorrow :) We don't know how to pick out or size artwork for a space. The designer we worked with at the furniture store wants to come out and pick out something for us but we don't care to spend $600 plus on a picture.

I'm a firm believer in this forum and we know it's always going to be our decision since we have to deal with it but I love to read the responses to get new idea's..everyone has been so helpful so far so why stop! ha ha

We're not going to install a mantel at this time as we like the clean look. She has two built-in's she can fill up with whatever on the other wall..haha If/when we do add one I think it will be a simple mantel shelf.

I also like the piece my wife picked out. We both looked online for around 3 hours yesterday and we're always worried of it being too bold, or the total opposite, "matchy matchy"

I just can't believe we've come this far in a few weeks! We knew this was going to be our second largest update expense (kitchen most so far) but we've been saving for a couple months so we could make this happen in a short time.

I love your new ceiling fan! It's certainly an interesting choice to mix with the more traditional elements in your room. As for art, I think you will want something that is special to you, not something generic. You don't have to have one large piece. You could use four (or more) smaller pieces grouped together in simple frames. Think about what interests you as a couple and consider art in that theme or print photographs that you love in black and white and frame those.

walt: Look at the ravens thread about art work. Please do wait and live with the space and look , in person, for art work. It doesn't have to be expensive to mean something to you. There have been several threads on here about getting to know something ...a feel if you will, before you bring it home to stay . PLease give it time. c

I love the ceiling fan. I've never seen anything like it. I like the fireplace the way it is without the mantel. Both pictures are too bold for me, but I like things to look very soft and serene, so that doesn't mean they wouldn't work for your room. I can relate to looking online for hours...been there, done that and still done have any art work.

I like the colors in the artwork but think the shape is too similar to the TV (if that's staying where it is now). The ceiling fan is very cool!

I think the scale is too wide for the firebox.

Where did you find that divine fan???? I don't like the art work there, sorry but you asked. How about looking for a scene that takes you away so that when your eyes go to it you can imagine walking in to the scene. Just an idea. The room looks soooo good now.

trailrunner has offered the same advice as I'd give. Don't rush artwork.

Live with your space, look around, and come to agreement with your wife.

600 for a piece of good, original art that is ready to hang on your wall is cheap. 200 for a print from Pier One is too much.
Although I don't know what you paid...I would consider going to art fairs and shows and find a piece of artwork that speaks to you and your wife. It will become something that brings you joy when you look at it and something you'll always have.

I happen to like William Hawkins on ebay- nothing special- I just like his paintings. They usually go for around 400 and then you have a nice oil painting.

I do like Pier One's paintings though, and if I had no other choice might hang one.

This VanGogh art.com print is likely not your style, and sorry I can't make it fit the perspective of your photo from this angle, but your interesting fan reminded me a bit of a windmill...just couldn't resist the idea. I think this shape works better in your space in relation to the firebox. JMHO and I love what you've accomplished!

I found the fan during one of my "online search marathons" ha ha. It's a Fanimation Mariano.

Also, the $600 would NOT be an original...

We actually tried three different pieces over the weekend but I lost some of the files so all I have to share is this one. Due to the large space we felt like it needed to be something substantial but they were a little overwhelming.

The wife sent me an email first thing this morning with a subject of "HINT HINT" that contained pictures of four different mantel shelfs, go figure. I'll be honest and say that I feel we will have more decorating choices with one...right now we will be hanging one larger picture or grouping.

Sooooo, I guess I'll be starting another thread when the flooring is installed and furniture arranged and go from there!!!

I don't think any painting is going to work in that location because there isn't a mantle to ground it. Maybe a piece of ironwork?

Or maybe just leave it blank. Finish the rest of the room and then decide if you really need something on that brick.

A great place to look for art and original pieces is Etsy. I love the fan and you have come a long way!

I think the pic is okay. If it's not the expensive--maybe get it for now and you can take your time looking for the "perfect" one. However, I thought the pic in your other post was a better fit.

Make sure to post a pic of the fan once installed--I love it and am curious to see how it looks in the space.

The fan is wonderful. I believe any picture you hang should be about the width of the firebox and hung about 3 brickrows above the firebox, not the 6 rows the picture of the horses is hung.

IMO the fireplace looks great without a mantel.

Is the TV going to remain where it is?

Here is the other pic I put up just to see since it's the largest we own. It was cheap and has a plastic front which produces a terrible glare:

The TV is going to stay but will be placed on a proper stand. We've been improvising during our move and remodel.

Just for fun, here are the mantels the wife liked. We could chose what color and stain and that would be another story! ha ha Anyway, they would all be 72" long (fireplace is 75" and we could order any length if we wanted) 10" shelf and 7" high.
