Making a shelf for our small foyer which is open to

the living room.

This new shelf is going under a mirror, on top of the mirror is a copper and brass

antique LI Railroad hat rack. I plan on finishing the brackets in copper to match

the railroad hat rack. I already bought gold leaf paint, which I painted

the mirror frame with, now I have to look for copper paint...I'm pretty

sure I can find it in a copper finish.

the existing shelf is 8" deep and 26" wide...the new shelf will be 9 1/4" deep

by 28 1/2" long...also the existing shelf was stained too dark, so I painted it

light beige to match the walls, and it looks ugly, so that's why we're

making a new shelf.

Does anyone have an opinion on how much space

to leave between the top of the shelf and the bottom of the mirror,

or should we butt it right up to the mirror? Right now there is about

a one inch space.

these are the brackets, which I'm going to finish

in copper to match the hat rack.

this is the mirror and hat rack...I just painted insideof the mirror with the gold

leaf paint yesterday...the outside of the mirrors frame

is brass.

we're going to take the hat rack down

to buff up the copper.

so, opinions welcomed, how much space between the mirror

and shelf?
