Accu Cutter Go received!!

The cutter came today and I spent the afternoon cutting squares for HSTs. I really like it!!!!!!!

I think it is going to be great for scrap quilts.

The instructions are to read the instructions completely before using and I still was confused.

I looked at a video online and it is soooooo simple! (duh LOL)

It cuts cleanly and I easily cut 4 at one time. I tried 6 layers and it was hard to turn the roller.

I did not realize that the 5 inch square needed a different size mat and I didn't order it.

JoAnn has it on sale so I ordered it. They also have the cutter on sale for $349. I only paid $303 for it with 2 dies and shipping from ShoppersRule.

One more thing to find a space for in my small sewing room.

How fun is that!?! I didn't know what the Accu Cutter was so I went to AccuQuilt and watched the video. It looks amazing. It actually looks like a lot of fun. I really do not enjoy the cutting part of quilting. I do not quilt enough to warrant getting one of these, but I sure think it is neat! Congratulations!

Houston had a really bad drought last year. Several million trees died, primarily pines and magnolias, but a lot of oaks, too. About 6 pines on my block are dead (that's 100% of the pines on my block). A lot of houses that lost trees are rent houses, and believe me, most renters don't give a fig about the landscaping. I told the renter next door to me that he needed to water or the trees would die and he blew me off. Now there are 2 dead pines in his yard, and supposedly he's buying the house, but doesn't have enough money to get the dead trees cut down. I hope they don't fall anytime soon. It takes a LOT of water to keep a pine alive, since they have a really deep tap root. Also, people on limited incomes (like me) can't afford a huge water bill. I was saving water from my a/c just to keep my roses and other plants alive. These trees weren't just in peoples' yards, but were on city rights-of-way, city parks, and large natural parks that don't have any water unless it rains. The 200 acre arboretum, which is mostly forest, has thousands of dead trees and looks terrible now. Plus, we had water restrictions. And the city quit watering trees on their property to conserve water. Plus, water lines broke all over the city because concrete and asphalt buckled, and a lot of water was lost that way, too. Crews had to come from other cities to help repair the leaks. It isn't as easy as just dragging the water hose around.

I think the trick is to do as much ahead of time as possible, stick with fairly simple recipes and have one or two Martha-y touches. And as others have mentioned - decor is a good place for the Martha touches, since you can do that way ahead of time. Mashed potatoes are a great option since they fill up a big bowl on the table, most people eat them and they are a snap to make. Why not use vegetable stock and a bit of roasted garlic instead of dairy products? (I know that chicken stock is the generic substitute for butter with dieters, but I think that vegetable stock has a bit more flavor) I'd serve a simple veggie that can be steamed or blanched at the last minute - broccoli, asparagus, green beans - whatever your family likes. Add a bit of lemon or margarine or olive oil to keep the dairy out. (another big bowl on the table with minimal effort) Fruit salad was a great idea. A green salad would be good too. You should be safe with almost any oil-based dressing. Throw in some star fruit or pluots or something to make it seem fancy shmancy. Breads and rolls were my favorites as a kid - and certainly what I see being snatched up at the kid's table at our family gatherings. Bread doesn't need to contain dairy - you could ask what kind of bread the kids normally eat or call your local bakery. Since they are more likely to use real ingredients rather than chemicals, they'll be able to tell you what's safe. Or if wanted to be kind of Martha, you could make your own bread - not a big deal if you have a bread maker or make the dough the day before and slow the rise in your fridge until the day of the party. You've got pies coming. If you want another dessert, there is a great recipe for oatmeal chocolate chip cookies that the kiddos would like in The Garden of Vegan. Vegan or kosher recipes are good ways to keep the dairy out. A veggie tray or hummus and pita bread or some spiced nuts are super easy things for guests to nibble on until dinner is ready. I think we forget how delicious things can be with simpler flavors or just a few ingredients. If you fill your menu with stuff like that, you will have more time for one or two knock your socks off details and more time to spend with your guests.

I am still on the fence about this. The dies are expensive especially the ones I would want...like the alphabet. Some of the others are not too bad, Amazon has some of the best prices. I don't have a problem cutting strips with my ruler and rotary cutter, I don't use "shapes" much in my quilting or sewing for that matter. I guess I will just wait and see. If I come across a project that calls for a specific shape and a lot of them, I will look again. Thanks for the input. Now, do any of you have that bias tape maker???? From the reviews, it doesn't work so well for the tips not included with the machine. I think I would get more use out of that than an accuquilt. It does pay to stop and consider whenever you get a "wild hair" about something you see! :) I am glad I have learned this.

Ok. I'm going to hang my head and admit that the CM one isn't as bad as I originally thought (see my post above from March 9). I've since used it numerous times and have gotten much better at it. It's not the sinister piece of equipment that I felt it was. But it definitely takes some getting used to. I will admit that I liked the old CM CIRCLE cutter better and I got the hang of that one really quickly. This one takes a lot more practice. I'm still not comfortable enought to BUY it, but when I'm at crops, I don't panic about using it anymore. :) And Donna - I can't believe your CMC gives away stuff like that at crops!!! wow!! My CMC hasn't even been in the business for a year yet so she can't afford to give away big stuff yet. I'm looking forward to her little business to start turning a good profit so she can raffle off more than idea books and stickers. :) Patti

I do use it LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is no perfect one cutting system IMO!
It will never replace my rotary cutter the same as the little iron thingies will never replace a regular iron.
Depending on the way it is used there can be a lot of waste. The video shows just folding fabric and placing it in the cutter and I can tell you that will waste fabric. I still roughly cut mine into over sized pieces first after starching and ironing. If it is a long strip of fabric I do fold it over instead of cutting them.
I have been using the 5 inch die lately getting scraps under control. The thing I love about the cutter is the accuracy. The thing I dislike about it is some fabrics will cut to a slightly different size if not place on the straight of grain. Of course, this makes sense, but when I was cutting scraps I didn't feel like pulling each piece to find the straight of grain. It is not enough to matter for an experienced quilter, but it may throw a newbie off a little.
When I watched the video 'they' say the most popular die is the strip and I would prob never use it for strips. I prefer my June Taylor shape cut for strips.
It does take up my space on my folding table so I don't leave it out.
I have 2 books of nickel quilts so the 5 inch die is the one I like the most.
There are also applique die and I will never buy those.
It does require turning the handle to move the fabric over the die so it may be a prob for someone with arthritis.
Over all I find it to be faster than trying to measure and rotary cut squares.

I remember you getting this and wondered how you like it. I am a member of the Pfaff club at my dealer's - which cost $50.00. I don't normally pay for those kind of memberships, but I bought my machine there and I was taking classes there and okay - she caught me at a weak moment ~LOL. One of the perks is a 40% off coupon for an instock item (no sewing machines or software) they send for your birthday - which I had forgotten until it arrived yesterday. So this morning, I was making a mental note of what they had that was expensive that I would like to have. They started carrying the Accu Cutter system & I was thinking maybe It would be something I might like, if it was accurate for strips and squares and HST's. I would never get the fru fru dies. My hand and elbow always hurt already, and I like to be very, very accurate and precise.I think I am am a slow rotary cutter for this reason.And, I don't pay for the charms & precut strips - maybe I should. I did watch the videos and I questioned the off grain way they inserted the fabric (Ricky Tims & Alex). I would be surprised if the coupon can be used on this system, but it doesn't say it excludes it - so I need to make up my mind before I go in there. They are a small dealer, so if they say no, I am not going to fight them on it.
Thanks for sharing your opinion on it ~I need to look up the June Taylor Shape Cut ( I just finished cutting many, many 2.5" strips and 156 2.5 squares - boring)

I found the 'shape cut' at Wall-Mart for a really reasonable price. I absolutely love it for stips! Mine is 12" and the fabric is placed under (duh) and does not shift,. I cut 2.5 yesterday and you can cut 4 WOF at a time.
I have not had a prob at all with the 'bows' in the middle and I do when I use a rotary by itself. Starch, pin, whatever and I cut slow and STILL have to watch for the dreaded bow.

I have bought precut before and was disappointed because they were not cut as accurately as I would like.

My least part of quilting is the cutting process and if they were not so expensive I would buy kits LOL!!!!!

My B-day is Nov., anniversary Dec., and then Christmas so the cutter was my gift for all three!!!!!

My concern was the dies going dull and now that I have one I can see that the expense will be replacing the cutting mat that is placed over them.

Not that they are super expensive (about $10).

Rosa - so I 'hear' you telling me to try the shape cut for strips - my coupon is good for the month, so I have time. I do use starch and I've started using the same ruler thru out the project (that takes memory) and yesterday I found I had to trim a bunch of strips - just a smidgen, but it would have made a difference in matching - and I'm quessing it was from the slight bowing.

The dealer demo'd this when they first got it - it was sitting out and she was cutting flowers or stars or something I wasn't interested in.

I don't want to pay for precut - I want the mistakes in cutting to be my own~LOL.

I got the Accu Cutter Go for the 40% off! They only had one unopened box in stock, so I had to make the decision or risk it going to one of the other B'day members (I thought). They are so low key, no pressure people - so it was completely my decision. What the heck - it is my b'day this month (thus the coupon).
I did not get any other dies - only the bonus pack that came with the cutter - 4.5 square, 2.5" square, half square 2" finished triangle. And the 10" cutting mat.
I will still get 25% off of the other dies. I have to decide which ones I want.
I need to find a quick pattern to practice on - maybe a DNP.

What dies do you have?
