QOD 1/26/10 - What would you give it up for?

Today's question: if you had to choose between quilting and something else, what would make you give up quilting? In other words, if you were offered a billiion dollars to choose between quilting and something else, what one thing would be worth giving up your quilting for the money?

Knitting with any and all yarn available! My yarn habit is just as bad as my fabric habit and they are battling for space.

I'm not sure I understand the question correctly. I'd give up quilting and a billion dollars for guaranteed good health for my family. Notice I didn't say happiness - they are responsible for their own happiness - but I really want good health for them. (Am I being too serious???)

Just a few highlights.... Our guild is called Quiltessence Quilters. They meet the 3rd Saturday morning monthly, we are located in Shillington, PA (Lancaster and Reading areas is close to our members)The cost is $24.00 per year. The club is limited to 50 members. Our guild has a variety of speakers and programs, we do charity quilts for a womans center. In addition we have a summer picnic, holiday dinner, a variety of swaps, show and tell, raffels, and as many of the things mentioned above. To raise funds for speakers and other programs we make and raffel off a queen/king size quilt by selling tickets at various quilt shows. This year we will attend the NQA show in Columblus, Ohio. (A four day trip) - There is also a retreat in the winter months. As with other guilds there are smaller groups that meet as suited by those groups. I have learn so much from such a fun bunch of women in the guild. I would recommend this experience to everyone. Barbara

Oh no! I had typed a long response, it seems to have been lost. I'll try to restate quickly: I agree with kaismom and liriodendron. To add - this may be crazy, but what about have the kids/dh area where the fridge is in plan 22, perhaps add a bar fridge for juice, fruit, snacks and a toaster and simple cheap microwave there? Then you have total flexibility to design the work area to suit you. Windows versus wall oven? I vote for windows, but it depends entirely on how you use your kitchen. I had a raised wall oven in my last kitchen, loved it - clearly this is the perfect kitchen ideal. Wanted one in my current kitchen, but it would have meant compromising my long run with no uppers or my clean up run. I wouldn't do it - so decided to put the wall oven under my cabs on the peninsula. Do I miss my raised wall oven? Not a bit, totally irrelevant. Why? Because I don't use it much. I have a small family, two adults, two kids. We don't often cook huge meals. I rarely bake. We use the speed oven constantly and it is big enough to prepare almost all our meals. So in my situation it is a no-brainer, of course I should put the oven under counter. Ask yourself those same questions: do you have a very large family? Are you an avid baker? Do you have back problems? Do you cook for a living? All are home all day all week cooking? If you answer yes to a few of these questions you might want it raised. Otherwise, go for windows - assuming as kaismom pointed out that you have good balance, a good view, no privacy issues, etc. You asked about my prep sink. I use it to wash veggies, fruit, drain pasta, fill pots, fill water filter, etc. I do some prep to the left of the prep sink and to the right of the hob, but mostly I prep on the temporary table/island I have right across from the prep sink and hob. With the island I think I have a pretty ideal work area between the prep sink, hob, island and fridge. Traffic flows on the other side of the island, so I'm alone there when cooking, but there is plenty of room for others to wash dishes, prep elsewhere, get snacks on the other side of the island, etc.

What interesting responses! I want the fork pins!! I saw them when I ordered the small patchwork pins, but they were shown used instead of the safety pins. I have a Pfaff with an attached small walking foot & I have sewn forever with one, so I take the even feed for granted-plaids match perfectly& easily if you cut your pattern is correctly. I never thought to hand baste a difficult intersection. On this stack-n-whack, I followed Bethany Reynolds' directions explicitly on when to press seams open & when to press to one side, as well as when to cut off the bunny ears. She states this all helps to match & nest the intersections & points, which are every 5" in all directions. She was right. Next to sewing, pressing is so rewarding to me. That's when you realize how good (or bad) your sewing is :) I think nicely pressed seams are essential for accuracy. I remember "pounding seams" in materials that you can't press because they were too thick or would melt -wools, leather, furs, upholstery,etc.

The 2 walls are 13' each (the L part of kitchen). The sink wall has 5' of counter space on each side of 36" sink. The Island is 5 x 7.5 feet. The counter on the left of sink has 3' visible space and 2' that goes into that big swing door. (I hope this makes sense!) I also have 40" from island to sink and cabinet wall. If I could suggest one idea in your plan for more storage: is there any way to add cabinets under your island on the side where the seating is. You could reduce the space between island and sink wall to 40" (if this works for you) this could be an extra 8" added to the depth of island. Then if you can extend the island top a bit more, and add cabinets to the back side as well, this would increase storage space for those things you don't need everyday. I'm not sure if you can tell from the pic but there are 3 big cabinets under my island where the chairs are, just like I describe above. As far as getting the look without a KD- I think if I had a good custom cabinet maker that was open to new ideas it could have been done. I am also working on another project with no KD, just the salesperson from cabinet dealer and it has been a challenge. Thank god for my home builder/GC who is very good at making my standard size pieces look custom, and by coming up with ingenious ways to fix those measuring errors made by cab salesguy! Well for a billion dollars, I would give up quilting to start up my own charitable organization like Bill & Melissa Gates did! And of course I would have to have a very nice boat to run this organization from. But I would always miss quilting and there would be days I would say "I gave up quilting for THIS!?!"

But I am at the point in my life when I've had to look at giving up some things. Partly because the finances aren't there to do everything I want to do, partly because I don't have time to do everything and partly because I don't have the physical energy to do it all anymore. But as I've given up other things it's quilting that becomes more and more important to me. The garden is slowing shrinking and getting less attention while the fabric stash and quilt project list is growing. My knees believe I have made the right choice although my car still thinks it should pull into every plant nursery it passes!

rivergirl, not too serious, no. If it's guaranteed good health for your family, then that's your choice.

I think I am in the same boat as you, Kate. I don't have the knees to play sports any more, and even running after the grandkiddies is too tough on them. Sitting at the machine, on the couch with some handwork, or just on the floor folding and re-folding (or, as DH says, "fondling and re-fondling") my stash is more important to me now than it ever was.

If I HAD to choose between quilting and something else (and be rewarded with a billion dollars for choosing the "something else"), I think I would like to finally take pastry classes and open my own wedding facility where I could offer all kinds of services including locations for receptions/parties, places to hold weddings, the catering, photography, dresses, tuxes, flowers, you name it! A One-Stop Wedding Shop! But that just sounds like a lot of work.

So I'll stick with the quilting, thank you very much!

I can not think of a single thing I'd give quilting up for. I've done it for such a long time now that not doing it would be like losing apart of myself.

First of all, to simplify this and to remove all guilt, let's just say that this is OTHER THAN peace on earth and the good health and welfare of our loved ones! So if were 20 again I would have said raise, train and ride horses, but I'm old now and even though a billion dollars would help pay for the exorbitant price of dealing with these beasts, it won't buy the strength, courage and energy it takes, so other than that my next passion would be to suddenly find some rich patron who is crazy about my landscape paintings and hooks me up with galleries and other rich patrons, leaving me free to paint and go to all the wonderful places I'd love to paint in, such as France, Italy, and all over the USA. That would be Heaven on earth for me. Not to mention eating all the wonderful food everywhere, which is a close 3rd passion of mine!

If I didn't have old folks to care for, and could afford it, I'd give it up to travel and be on a cruise ship or plane to somewhere exotic constantly.

Odds are it's never going to happen so if I travel, there's going to be applique in my bag!

Can't think of anything. Without my sewing, of which quilting is a large part I would be lost. Not all that fond of having lots of money anyways. Jayne

I can't think of anything either. I have given up lots of other hobbies for quilting. I have no interest in doing other crafts, etc. since I started quilting. I don't think I would be happy, even with a billion dollars, if I could not quilt.

Even if (when?) I don't have a lot of money, I still have enough to buy some fabric now and then and....of course, there is my stash, now joined by a small yarn stash for my weaving. So between quilting, weaving, embroidery, sewing clothes and home dec projects, I have enough stuff to last me a long, long, time. But if I traded it all in, it would be to travel the world in moderate style - staying in one place several weeks or longer before moving on to the next new place.

Seems to me I could make a lot of people's lives less stressful than my quilting ever could with that kind of money. And, as long as I'm dreaming, it has to be forever tax-free wherever it goes. Like that's going to happen!

Frankly, the money would be enough. I'd just switch to full-time knitting. 8^) I do love quilting, but I love knitting just as much and if I wasn't a quilter, I'd have time to learn spinning!

I can see you as a spinner, Annie! Then, of course, you could use some of the money to buy yourself a small flock of sheep, learn to shear them, and have a renewable source of wool for spinning and knitting!

For a mere million dollars, I'd stop quilting to hybridize daylilies full time. HINT- I already spend an obscene amount of time and money on my daylily hobby.

Petalpatsy, mine and my husbands daylily habits turned into a business three years ago. We had to start selling them to feed the habit! Be careful, LOL!
