Funny Story (re vending machines)

OK, Sam's post about vending machines reminded me of this story. Feel free to add your own vending machine story!

Last September Joe and I went to London, England for a week's vacation. When we were at the airport waiting for our flight home there was a vending machine in the gate area. I had some British pounds and pence coins, I thought I would get some snacks from the vending machine for the flight since I couldn't change coins back into Canadian money when I got home.

There was a guy using the vending machine so after he was finished I went up and put in my money. This was in a closed room with lots of people waiting for the flight, not a big open space and everyone could see the vending machine. It was the kind of machine where you press a letter and number and the snack falls down from coiled spaces (understand? I'm not explaining it very well).

Anyway, I put in my money and make my choice and the bag of candy only falls part way and gets stuck between the coil and the side of the machine. I couldn't get my money back because the machine thought it had given me the snack. I banged on the side of the machine but the candy would not budge. I tried sticking my hand up inside but the flap would not let me do this. I banged a few more times, all the while thinking that someone was going to call airport security on me!! Then the guy who was just at the machine came up to see if he could help me. He banged on it too, we even tried rocking the machine but that bag of candy was stuck.

So he said he'd buy something and when his came down it would push mine down with it. So he put in his money and made his choice and his bag of candy hit mine. Mine fell to the bottom but then his got stuck in the same place mine was!!!! We could do nothing but laugh. Again we tried banging but it was stuck there. I offered to pay for his but he wouldn't take the 2 pounds. I was so embarassed!!!

That is a funny story and that was a nice, nice man.

I saw a funny video of a small squirrel or maybe a chipmunk sneaking into the bottom flap of a vending machine, the place where the product falls so you can grab it, and what ever the animal was, was able to steal some of the stuff in the machine. It made several trips inside the machine. I suppose stocking up for the winter. LOL Dottie

Oh NO! That doesn't sound very funny to me. That sucks.Have you heard from Verizon yet? I hate calling them. I have wasted so many hours of my life on the phone with those guys. Their fav thing to do is transfer you cause nobody ever knows anything. Guess the good news is you got your roomate to help you do something. Mine's worthless.

Candy, that's an idea. I'll give that some thought. My MIL is notorious for giving back the presents you get her. It may take several years but they always come back. Not because she doesn't like them, she just thinks we need it more than she does and hates that we spend money on her. (After 30 years in the family, I have learned to buy something that I really like.) She does all of her children that way. But I'm sure my little scissors will never find their way home because she loves to embroidery. I have several pillow cases that she has done. They are beautiful. She is blind in one eye and getting to where she can't see as well as she used to so there are some mistakes made but that makes them even more special. Some of the things we have gotten her such as embroidery thread, needles, iron on transfers and pillow cases she does not return, except the pillow cases after she has embellished them. Trust me she will not offer them back after she uses them compared to what she has been using. I have to shake my head and laugh every time I think about it. IÂm going to put this story it in my grandchildrenÂs scrap books with a picture of her embroidering. It will be a funny memory. By the way, do you hear harp music and angels sing when I mention the scissors like I do? I'm sure MIL heard them when she used them for the first time.

As a 13 yr. old brand new freshman, my best friend and I, thinking we were cool, decided to skip our first chemistry lab of the year. We had to make up the lab during lunch. During the lab, my friend stood there, mouth agape, pointing at me. I said "what's wrong? Spit it out!" At this point, the chemistry teacher ran across the room and frantically started beating me on the head. I've never seen a teacher move so fast. It is then that I realized I had caught my hair on fire in the Bunsen burner! My coolness rapidly dissipated. I was mortified. This was not how I wanted my first week of high school to go. My eyebrows were singed and my hair burnt. It smelled. I think I had to have it cut. I had been putting a product in my hair to lighten it and I think it made it very flammable. My best friend SWORE not to tell anyone. The next day, I walk into school and the first thing I heard out of someone's mouth, nonchalantly, was "Hi Torch!" And that was my nick name for the next year, to occasionally resurface throughout high school. This same best friend and I were taking advanced placement English. We had to memorize a sonnet and repeat it in front of the class. My friend volunteered to go first. I was sitting in the back of the class. I thought it would be funny to hold a sign up while she recited her sonnet. It said "YOU HAVE SOMETHING HANGING OUT OF YOUR NOSE." She stopped dead in the middle of her sonnet and said "What are you doing?" All eyes turned to me holding that sign. I wanted to crawl under my desk. That one sure backfired! Then there was the time I passed a note to a friend that said I'M BORED. The teacher intercepted the note. "You're bored, huh?" He said and proceeded to pull my desk and chair with ME in it all around the room, out the door and into the hallway, around the hallway and then back into it's spot, while the whole class watched wide eyed. "Are you still bored?" He asked me. I couldnt even answer. And then there was the time in seventh grade as an 11 yr. old that i had to bake something for English class and read the recipe out loud. I wanted to make M and M cookies. My mother refused to help (she was not the best mother, to be honest.). I tried to make them myself. But I believe I mixed up baking soda and flour. The cookies finished and looked yummy, sprinkled with bright M and M's. But they tasted like soap. I was in tears all night and dreading school the next day. I got up in front of the class and read my recipe and passed the cookies out. The kids eagerly reached for the cookies. I really hoped that a miracle would happen. But no, it was pretty sad to see the whole class gagging and spitting out the cookies.

Years ago, I thought there were only 2 types of hostas. I had the plain green ones. I was pleased to see the simple variegated ones. I kept splitting them over the years & have a 20-foot run of them, and a thick cluster of them. I was happy in my ignorance ;-) It's kinda funny now...

About ten years ago I was travelling for work visiting a vendor in VERY rural Georgia. A coworker and I stopped at a small gas station, and there was an old-fashioned coke machine there. It was bottles, all lined up behind glass, with a coin box on the side.

For a lark, and because it was hot, we decided to buy a couple of cokes...mostly because we wanted to see the cool machine work. So we put in the change, and waited. Nothing happened. Nothing dropped, nothing moved, nada.

Hmmmm. We saw people drinking bottled cokes coming from this direction, so unless the machine broke, like, seconds ago it should work. More money went in. Nothing. We tried one more time, scratching our heads and wondering how the thing worked. No buttons or levers, nothing.

As we were standing and scratching our heads, a man comes up, looks us over, proceeds to OPEN THE DOOR and take a bottle of soda from the completely unlocked cooler, then plunk some change into the slot ROFLMAO!

No lock, no automation, no dropping cokes. Simply put your money in the coin box and take your coke, on the honour system.

We were there for a week. A long, hot, humid, clothes sticking to your back and bugs circling your head, no air conditioning week.

When I was in college many years ago, we had a coke machine in the dorm. One of my friends put in her nickel, this was in 1942, and to her surprise, 10 cokes came out. What a treat.

That kind of reminds me of a rotary phone that was my grandfathers, it was black table type. I kept it and it still worked and and used it in a basement room. One of my sons friends was over (he was about 12 yrs old) and needed to use the phone. I pointed to the old black phone. He picked up the
and stared at it for a minute, he had no idea how to use ..
boy did that make me feel old.

I got rid of it a few years later, wish I kept it. My sister actually went out a bought a retro looking one like it with the buttons. It just was as heavy and substantial looking as the one I had.

We had vending machines at work. I noticed a bag of potato chips stuck in the machine, I bought soething and as it dispensed it pushed out the chips. So I got BOGO that day!

izzie, we have one of the old black rotary phones. Our house in GA has a phone cubby in the hall so my granddad gave me a phone to put in it. I LOVE the ringer on this phone- it will wake the dead which is important since Eric is so hard of hearing. Trade off is that it also scares the #@$! out of the cats and me when it rings, LOL.

I was just yesterday telling my son about those old rotary phones.
How you don't push buttons, you actually dialed the number.
He said, "Wow, that's a lot of work to make a phone call.
Didn't that make your fingers tired or make them sore?"

I'm starting to feel the differences caused by the generation gap.

Casey we have had that to happen to us many times.But greg and hit hot temper,he would just bout flip the machine up side down,making my face blood red because I was so so embarrased.One time I protended I was not with him because others were around him ,seeing him trying to flip the machine,so I asked Greg,Saying it this way,"Sir would you want me to get someone to help you,knowing all the time I was looking for the security man so I could tell him to come do something to Greg.I just knew we were going to jail for breaking the machine because greg would try to flip it ALL the way over,just for .75.But greg would say,I worked hard for this money and I am tired of these machines cheating me.I would beg greg please just let me give you .75 and let us get the heck out of here.But PLease its just .75.That make greg even madder for me to say that.LOL

Also dances the coke machine you are speaking of,we had those kind around here and there is still some like that at a few places and I love those kind.Were the cokes in bottles that after you placed the money in just open the door and pull one out?They used to be in bottles you could turn the empty bottles back in and get a nickle for.We used to go around collecting empty bottles and take them back to the what we would call the gas station.We collect enough so we could get all of us 6 kids a coke to drink,alone with a "MOON PIE" some never heard of that have you?Those were the good ole days.
