I have to tell you a funny story...a little long

First off all let me tell you that I have the BEST Mother in law in the world. She is 85 and is getting in poor health. When she is over for supper she really tries to help but ends up getting in my way. Since she really wants to contribute I try to find her an onion to peel or something she can do at the table. I also had a pair of scissors that I just LOVED!!! They were those small scissors that fold up and look like a little pair of spectacles when they were folded. The part that you put your fingers through was really wide and easy to hold.

Now for my story...

Last week we had MIL over for supper. I had been crocheting earlier at the table and there laid my scissors. . I didnÂt have anything to keep her busy and I saw her out of the corner of my eye starting to get up which meant she was heading to the stove. Once she gets up it's nearly impossible to get her to sit back down and let me cook all by myself. I hurried to the table and said to her. Look at my little scissors. I just love them. I preceded to show her how they would fold and said " see you fold them this way and that way and you can take them with you" and before I could finish the rest of the sentence with "wherever you want and wonÂt get stuck" Âher eyes lit up like a little kid at Christmas and said "THANK YOU, I sure can use those." Well... her bright happy eyes were quite a contrast with my startled I canÂt believe what just happened face. I didnÂt know what to say but from some where the words You're Welcome came out of my mouth. What!!! I didn't just say that did I?

I thought... sheÂll lay them down and when I clean the table she will forget about them.

NO that didnÂt happen. That poor feeble little old lady that moves at a turtles pace stuck those wonderful favorite scissors of mine in her shirt pocket so fast it was like a streak of lightning. I could have cried. Everything has gone through my mindÂ

The next time IÂm there do I steal them and make her wonder if she may have lost them?

NO way... I couldnÂt do that, IÂm not a thief

Do I ask for them backÂ?

NO wayÂ the look on her face was priceless when she said Thank You

What to doÂWhat to do

IÂll just go buy another pairÂNOT

I have looked everywhere and cannot find a pair like those.

That is what I was looking for in the first place when we went to Hobby LobbyÂI found Beads but no scissors like the ones I had.

I sure hope MIL loves those scissors as much as I did.

ROFL.... it's a good sitcom episode!

What if, the next time you see her, you ask if you can look at the scissors to get the name of the manufacturer off of them. Let her know you're going to try to order some for yourself. That will give her the opportunity to give them back... if she's so inclined. And if not, maybe you can find them on the internet.

Oh and sorry to dispute your claim... but MY mother in law was the best in the world :)

Candy, that's an idea. I'll give that some thought.
My MIL is notorious for giving back the presents you get her. It may take several years but they always come back. Not because she doesn't like them, she just thinks we need it more than she does and hates that we spend money on her. (After 30 years in the family, I have learned to buy something that I really like.) She does all of her children that way. But I'm sure my little scissors will never find their way home because she loves to embroidery. I have several pillow cases that she has done. They are beautiful. She is blind in one eye and getting to where she can't see as well as she used to so there are some mistakes made but that makes them even more special. Some of the things we have gotten her such as embroidery thread, needles, iron on transfers and pillow cases she does not return, except the pillow cases after she has embellished them. Trust me she will not offer them back after she uses them compared to what she has been using. I have to shake my head and laugh every time I think about it. IÂm going to put this story it in my grandchildrenÂs scrap books with a picture of her embroidering. It will be a funny memory.

By the way, do you hear harp music and angels sing when I mention the scissors like I do?
I'm sure MIL heard them when she used them for the first time.

I once watched several small carrot plants get pulled under the ground one after another in a short period of time.Just like in the cartoons. I stomped the tunnel on either side of where the carrots were and trapped the gopher in the middle. It stuck it's head up out of a hole where a carrot used to be and a shovel was the last thing that critter ever saw.He made good fertilizer-at least the plants grew pretty good that year once he was gone. Putting the water hose in the hole doesn't work.they dig tunnels to drain rain water etc.so they know how to get away from water when they have to. A friend put a bunch of gopher gassers (poison smoke bombs) in several gopher holes then covered them with wood-as the instructions say-Halfway down the block people came running out of their house with smoke pouring out from under the house.They thaught they were on fire... He flooded his next door kniebors back yard where the gophers drain hole was too on another day.He had left the hose on all afternoon and the water was washing mud into the guys pool. Nothing like kicking back with a homebrewed beer watching someone at war with the gophers. Almost as good as watching the launch ramp follies at the lake every summer. I've had so many examples in the recent weeks, it's hard to remember them. A couple stand out: Was having lunch one day at a buffet and a little girl, IDK, maybe 9-10? was there with presumably her grandmother? She was a chatty little thing, not boisterous or anything, rather animated and active like healthy kids would be expected to exhibit. There was one annoying thing... talking non-stop with her mouth full of food. I suppose grandma? didn't want to cause trouble, maybe doesn't spend much time with her? IDK. But in virtually every other way she was great. Then the topper, the lady was going to go refill her milk and the little girl goes "Let me get that for you!", went and filled the glass and brought it back, resumed eating and talking and I went if that's the biggest problem, that's not a problem for me. Was at Aldi the one day and I was unusually stiff and sore, was limping badly and as I walked around my vehicle I had my hand on it to steady myself until I got going. Grabbed the bags from the back to take in with me and a car stops and a young(er) guy, maybe mid-late 20s? goes "Hey buddy, do you need any help?" I was kind of embarrassed (am I getting THAT old??) and said thank you but no, I'm fine and he goes "Are you sure, I'd be glad to give you a hand if you need anything". It really made the day go better. There's a lot of good kids out there, a lot of great ones too. Sometimes seems rare to see them but when you do, it sure gives a good feeling. Although I will say, the weather *does* seem to change peoples' moods a lot! :)

When DD was small she watched me dress, and admired the bra I was putting on - it had a touch of lace on it. Later at the grocery store she announced to the bag boy "Mommy is wearing a really pretty bra today". I nearly died, the poor teenage boy almost died from blushing. Then DD said "No, really, she does. Go on mommy, show him!". I did not, thank you LOL. Another time she saw a cashier wearing a hijab and asked me if her hair was wet, because she was wearing a towel on her head. I explained what it really was, and that it was a religious symbol etc. etc. She really seemed to understand and that was that. But later, as we left the store, she yelled out to that cashier "Good-bye! And I am sorry you have to wear that towel on your head!". When she was REALLY small, she decided that she did not like vegetables, and all vegetables were PEAS. She was offered a sample of pasta. She peeked into the little cup and saw the veggies mixed in and said "No tak-you. It a pea!". She was always very polite LOL. She was (still is) fussy about food especially anything new. She had eaten plain pasta before, but I had cooked bow tie noodles this time. She was suspicious. I told her it was the same as the other noodles, just a different shape. She carefully licked the edge of a bowtie, and shuddered. I was so mad I had to STAND ON THE PORCH! Her and DH still get a kick out of that one. Dances.

I thought that was a violin playing behind your sad story LOL

I gave my old computer to my son and bought a new one. I hated the new one. Everything that used to be so simple... was suddenly complicated.

I definitely heard the angels and harps every time I'd think about that old machine and how simple my computer life was when I used it. Sigh........

Has anybody else had an Angels & Harps experience?

I love this story!! It makes me smile just thinking of that little lady using those scissors and blessing you each time she does, because you gave her such a wonderful gift! I hope you find another pair!
I had something similar happen once. I had bought a couple of new craft books (the big expensive ones) and took them to show to an elderly relative. She thought I was GIVING them to her and she was overjoyed! Yep, I left them with her and accepted her hug as she clutched my precious books in her hands. LOL I truly do feel your pain!

I'm there with ya Momatoad patting your hand and shaking my head. I still can't believe that I wasted all that gas trying to find another pair as high as gas is and still came home empty handed.
I talked to MIL this morning on the phone and she mentioned my scissors, a a oh, I mean HER scissors, she absolutely loves them. I heard harps and angels on her end of the line and sad violin music on my side. I do believe a slight tear came to my eye.

Great!.... now I want a pair of those awesome little scissors.... but they don't exist... unless I want to knock down a little old lady and take 'em (which I'm pretty sure is politically incorrect). Seriously, if you ever do find them... let us know.

Mamatoad, try Amazon.com "used" books... maybe they'll have those big craft books. I feel your pain :)

Oh Gluecille, What a story to tell your grandkids! Have you thought of looking on Ebay for a pair of those scissors? I have found things on Ebay in the crafts and sewing section that I remembered from years ago. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you find a pair. :o)

Gardengirl!!!!!!!!!! I think you found them!!!!!!! I just hope the metal around the fingers are wide. I heard angels sing, harps playing and a ray light shined down on the picture. I'm ordering them right now!!!!!!!!!!!
