I've never heard of ham base. Maybe it's something not used much in Texas???

In fact,when I first made Ham,Green Beans and Potatoes and took to work,no one there had ever eaten it.Maybe it's a northern thing? They sure do like it now though! LOL! That's what made me go on a hunt for base,they requested some for tomorrow(I make a crockpot full and take it to work) and now I'm out of base,I used my last bit up today!

I've lived all over the USA and never heard of Ham Base as food either. When I clicked on this topic I thought it would be a discussion of a ham radio home base. LOL

What does it look like when you buy it? Is it canned or in little jars like bouillon? If I know what it looks like I will keep my eyes open for some for you.

Hmmmmm....it's like bouillon only better.I'm from PA originally too and it was everywhere in the stores around my area.I lived close to Altoona.

It's in little plastic jars....like this one but it's Ham Flavored.The one I always got was in a white jar and the brand was Alliant.I think it's in the area where you would find the Taco mixes and Chili mixes in the little foil bags.....

Last jar I got was Millers from Amish country about a yr ago! Back then it was 3 something for 16 0z---Don't know what it is now! If ya want, I'd be glad to pick you up a jar (if they still sell it) next time I go!!

I haven't bought the ham base but I buy smoked pork hocks and make my own. I try to keep some in the freezer.

I do make my own broth with a ham, but then add the base to it also.Makes for a very rich tasting wonderful broth.I made such a big pot today....HAD to add some base or it tasted watery and I don't like watery broth...:)

Most boullions are so full of sodium...how about that ham base?

I buy this at the grocery store in town. It is great for ham gravy, bean soup, pea soup, it says excellent for basting baked ham...never tried that though. If you ever need any let me know.
The guy at the grocery store said its a gourmet type product for them.

I never checked the sodium in it Granlan...it's probably loaded with it! But it sure does taste good....

I've seen it but never used it, I was always afraid it would be salty. Is it, CR? I'll have to look at the brand when I see it again.

You have to watch how much you use.If you use to much it is strong....not sure about the salt content in it.I put a little in the broth...taste it...add more if needed.I never just dump a bunch in....it can overpower very easily.But it has such a good hammy taste if used moderately.Not salty tasting to me anyway...just a good rich ham taste.

I've used Goya ham flavoring. It comes in packets in a small box. I've seen it in most stores around here. It makes things taste like it has ham in it without the fat. My BIL uses it all the time. I think it's usually on the aisle where the dried beans and rice are located. If that sounds anywhere near what you're talking about, ask at your store.

Hmm...maybe it is the rural areas ...you know us country folk...always make the best eats around! LOL! We don't make gourmet food,we're simple folk...yep...that's us!

Hey Donna,you sound like me...write notes and lists and then forget them or lose them! LOL!

I use it too (in Texas!)but can't recall the name & am just too pooped to walk to the kitchen & look. I get it at Brookshires & Wal-Mart.

It's great in all beans, including those wonderful green bean 'n potatoes like Chubby Rat mentions...also makes LA. red beans, smoked sausage & ham chunks taste super.

I've never heard of it, but sure will look for it the next time I go to the grocery store. I save bacon grease and use it when I cook beans to give them so flavor, but the ham base sounds like it would be a good alternative.
