Help me with my office...please!

We've just put in a new cork floor in our office, and although I love it, it's reading very orange right now and I'm at a loss as to where to go with paint color. Also, the room echoes...with the hard flooring and nothing on the walls, there's nothing to absorb the sound. I'll put things (books, probably) in the shelves and that will help, but I think I'll also put a huge fabric-covered corkboard on the wall opposite the windows (I just ordered a 4' x 6' board). That, of course, requires some color choices to be made too in terms of fabric...

It's a very long (10 x 20) room. One long side is almost entirely windows, the other is mainly blank wall. The two short ends are shelves (as you can see) on one side and a TV/folding treadmill on the other (behind the camera.)

I'm really hoping you all can help me with some paint suggestions and fabric suggestions...I'm struggling here! Thanks in advance!!

Since the room is large and bright -- perhaps a deep chocolate brown would make it more cozy -- then add LOTS of lime green accents (like your storage box and waste basket)

Find a bright green and white fabric to cover the new "inspiration" board .....

Check out:

Benjamin Moore - "Mink" -- #2112-10
Benjamin Moore - "Taupe" -- #2110-10

Both of these are rich deep colors and would work well with the accent tile in the cork flooring.

A rug and bamboo window blinds will do the trick for noise.

I like the brown idea. My study is brown.:)

I was just looking at the eiffel tower chairs on overstock.. I think they have an interesting modern look with a small footprint. My worry though would be how they'd stand up to daily use. As for artwork.. there are so many options but kids love animals. I'd look for some interesting artwork that your daughter will like looking at for hours a day that also incorporate animals.. I know many dislike them but I love the William Beard dancing bear prints. :) Good luck to your daughter!

It appears to be an Echeveria imbricata. It is very tall because it isn't getting enough sun; it will grow much better with full sun most of the day. Hard to do, if like myself, you live in a northern climate. Next remove all the flower spikes as they are mostly spent anyway. Next, whack the main stem about 2" below the bottom leaves. Allow it to callous for about a week to 10 days and replant in a cactus mix of your choice. Allow it to sit in the pot for a few days and only give it "sips" of water; no heavy drinks. The leaves will get soft. When they become more firm, it is a clue that you may water more frequently. If you remove all of the dead leaves from the remaining stem, give it more light, you may grow more pups. Howard

I would do this -- not having bright light behind the screens will be much better for his eyes, and he still has the pleasure of the open view by just glancing to the right. If the tall cabinet (with art) doesn't fit I woud just swivel it around to face the desk, keeping it in that corner. I'd keep that art where it is and put another piece (in either case) on the wall to the right. I recommend adding drapes, or at least drapery panels, to make the room look complete.

Thanks decoenthuasiaste! I think we will follow your advice and position the desk that way. This way I'll have the window to my left and can look into the backyard if I want, and also face the large wall where we can place a nice long & short bookcase with art. I think the reading area to my right (on wall that current has guitar and standing lamp) will look great. We are going to try a rug like this one to complement the more modern bamboo desk top and dark navy walls:

Played with this last night, and I definitely think brown will work. I will try swatches, but was wondering if you all could give an opinion on these browns. The white box is where the corkboard will be...I'm thinking of using a large-format Marimekko print there. The Mink seemed too red for the orange floor...here are two other choices:

Taupe (seems warmer than the floor, but that might be OK):

Otter Brown (matches the floor better, but seems a little blah):

Does cork act at all like marmoleum? Marmo changes color a bit as it is exposed to air. It takes about two weeks for the true color to settle in. Do you need to wait a couple of weeks before you choose your paint color, just to make sure?

Although it is my favorite of the two, I am surprised that "Taupe" is a brown color. Taupe has grey in it. It looks similar to my BM Plymouth Brown.

Good question, sarchlos...I googled and found nothing about cork oxidizing. You do have to let it acclimatize to the room, but that's about it.

And the BM's idea of taupe and mine are different, for sure!

Excellent virtuals!! Yes -- a chocolate brown seems to do the trick ...... so far "Taupe" (an odd name for such a dark brown ....) seems to work well ......

I like the first paint choice and think your idea to use a large-scale Marimekko print is brilliant. I would find one (if you can) that incorporates white, orange, the brown of your walls, and possibly taupe and turquoise. Good luck!
