My mother had Desert Rose, but my sister managed to get them.

Dessert, today was strawberry brownie layered cake. shhhhh I ate one and a half pieces.

Do you like the neighborhood? What are the values of the homes surrounding it? It's beautiful!, and the Birds Eye view looks good too, but what a lot of work in store! I'm used to dealing with much smaller numbers, so forgive me for thinking that's a lot of money for that much of a fixer upper. But I live in Texas and just bought in Oklahoma, where the prices are quite a bit lower. How many other places in the area have you looked at? What are the values of the homes in the neighborhood? You didn't say how much you've been looking. Having just completed house hunting, I know what it's like to fall in love with a place that just isn't reasonable. I did so, and still covet the land I fell in love with, even though I know it wasn't right for us, and the place we ended up buying is much better. Knowing all that, I'm still in love with the place on the river, one of the first places that we looked at and fell in love with and that we'll never own, because it was way over priced. Waaaaaay over priced for the condition of the out buildings and the home. It was and is a heart breaker, but we just couldn't justify spending that much on that particular home, no matter how beautiful that land was. The first time we saw it, it was sunset, and elk were grazing on the lawn. The birds were singing, and nothing could have been more beautiful. I was ready to buy the place right then. But then we took a closer look, and another closer look, and brought in some experts we trusted, and they took an even closer look, and they found serious problems. In spite of making the mistake of falling in love with the first place we saw, we had to turn away. No place has made my heart pitter patter the way that land did, but the house was just bad. Just plain bad. And the barns were bad. It was so over priced it just wasn't justified. I'm happy with what we ended up buying. I don't know what fair market value is for the place you're looking at, but be sure to figure in what the land is worth and what the building and location is worth, on top of what improvements are required to the property and buildings. kelly~ After posting on another thread to see more of your house photos, I did a search and this thread came up. OMG!!!! Your house turned out SPECTACULAR. It is soooo gorgeous. I love it all. There's not one thing I see that I think should be different. It is perfect. I too love the kitchen, the wood ceiling, the stone walls, and both of the showers. That slate is amazing! That's the most gorgeous application of slate I've ever seen (and I happen to adore slate!!). I am so happy that you have moved in. How goes the progress? Are you hosting the holiday's in your gorgeous new home? It would be a crime to keep that beauty all to yourselves. LOL. :o) Is that an outdoor shower? My goodness. I could just look at your photos all day. The trees in the front are gorgeous. The view looks amazing. The colors are perfect. The wood is sublime. Girl, you couldn't have done it better. It's stunning. And I too can see why you have oodles of equity in it already! Many happy years in your new home. :o) SusanL~ I too bought the Harrod's Creek plans from Cornerstone. We ended up not building that plan (too expensive for the area we were in... it was "overbuilding" for there). We purchased a home in your state and are having it finished. So now we're "neighbors". I hope you'll post photos of your house as you progress. It was my favorite home, and I still hope to build it somewhere, someday. :o)

Ok, I've answered some of these points above already but once again to clarify: 1. There wasn't enough room at the table, so we did fix a plate but it wasn't just a matter of taking our seats. There were no seats to take. Going to the kitchen was a last resort - I didn't know what else to do. 2. The hostess had not yet eaten by the time we arrived. So she couldn't remain sitting at the table and eat without getting up. She wasn't already sitting at the table. She was standing, fixing herself a plate. 3. I didn't realize how late we were till we got there - there was no set starting time and she lives an hour away, we sat in the Friday-Afternoon-Heading-Out-Of-Town traffic which I don't know if you can imagine unless you live in a place like Houston where it's unpredictable at best and can be horrific. 4. My children, ages 17 and 20 WERE includded - it's a holiday. (for those who aren't Jewish, maybe that's not meaning anything to you, but would you go to a friend's house for say, Easter Lunch, and leave your kids at home, no matter what age? This would be comparable to that. In any case the invitation which was sent via email said, You and your family. There's NO question, the kids were included. 5. She made no attempt to sit near us. She put her plate down as if she meant to sit near us but came back before ever sitting anywhere, picked up her plate, and went to the other table. I don't mind if she sat with us or not, it's just the way she acted as if she was going to, then apparently changed her mind. Even THAT wouldn't have mattered had it been a table with others in addition to just our family. It was just weird, the four of us, sitting alone in the kitchen, no other guests sitting or eating with us, the rest of the entire party in another room, and no attempt to integrate us into the party. Yeah, we're guilty of being late. But as hostess, it's her duty to make us comfortable and welcome, late or not. That's what I think you'd learn in an etiquette class. 6. And again - we were about 20 minutes late. Is that really late enough to turn around after being in the car one hour and not show up at all? If someone were 20 minutes late to my house and let that convince them to blow off my party, I'd be horrified. 7. I HAVE gotten over this, WAY over this. I wasn't going to answer lizzynola's post for that reason and because most of her questions/comments had already been covered in my previous posts. But since the discussion continues, I'm answering. I am glad I was able to vent here. I'm no longer mad or hurt. I'm still good friends with her. She had no ill intentions. I thank you all for your comments. May

This one was on the table at a book club potluck last week. Everyone raved and wanted the recipe. I'm going to cross post in new recipes. Zucchini Pickles - Heidi Swanson, 100 Cookbooks There are quite a number of ways to play around with the personality of these pickles. Sometimes I shave the zucchini paper-thin, resulting in a whispy tangle of pickled zucchini and onions. Other times I want my pickles to have a bit more bite, structure, and definition. In those instances, I slice the zucchini thicker, perhaps 1/8-inch, and let them drain as long as possible, sometimes overnight refrigerated. Also worth noting, when I make them for our personal condiment stash, I used a brown natural cane sugar. It gives the pickle liquid a brownish cast that, quite frankly, weirds people out if they don't know what is causing it. So, if I'm making the pickles to bring to a BBQ or something, I'll make them with regular organic cane sugar - one that is lighter in color.  3 medium zucchini (1 pound / 16 oz / 450 g), thinly sliced  1 medium white onion, thinly sliced  3 shallots, thinly sliced 1 1/2 tablespoons fine grain sea salt  1/4 cup (small handful) fresh dill sprigs 1 small fresh red chile pepper, very thinly sliced 1/2 tablespoon yellow mustard seeds 3/4 cup / 180 ml cider vinegar  3/4 cup / 180 ml white wine vinegar  1/3 cup / 1.75 oz / 50g natural cane sugar  Toss the zucchini, onion, shallots, and salt together in a colander and place over a bowl to catch the liquids. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least a couple hours. Toss once or twice along the way. You're aiming to get as much liquid out of the zucchini as possible.  When you're finished draining the zucchini, shake off any water. At this point you want the zucchini as dry as possible. Place in a 1 liter / 1 quart jar along with the dill, chile pepper, and mustard seeds. Alternately, you can cram them into a 3/4 liter Weck jar like I do, but it's always a bit snug in the jar. Combine the ciders and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves, and continue to boil for a few minutes. Pour the liquid over the zucchini and seal the jar. Let cool, then refrigerate. The pickles are good for a week or so.   Makes one large jar. Mmmm, looks delish. Glenda, you match the dishes! I'm soooo glad you have good friends with whom to have special dinners from time to time. Wish I could invite you to my house too, though the spicy food might put you off. I love hearing about the Southern food you make, as it's often different from "California" food.

You wore the perfect color for Easter! We are having ham too. Family is due here in about an hour or so. I baked a peach cobbler this afternoon, and it bubbled over on the oven floor. I was going to put the ham in that oven. So now it is in the bottom oven, I have dripping wet paper towels on the spills to soften them, and then I'll put the au gratin potatoes in that oven instead. Ugh! I wanted to relax and unkink the aches before they came!

Glenda, and the pretty one on the left. You are one stylish lady. Know you are a great friend to all of your friends. Yes, isn't Merle Norman make up wonderful. I was first introduced to it in 1960 and never stopped using it. May have tried some others, but is always the one I go back to. I am very fair skinned and its hard to find makeup that is light enough for my skin. Merle Norman works perfect for me. Know you had a wonderful day with your friends.

Glenda...beautiful as always! And your friends are nice looking too. I LOVE the colors on the walls of their home. They scream...relax! Yes...I love that! We didn't do anything special for our dinner, as we had to check on tents at the last minute. So, it was FFY (Fend For Yourself). I am glad you had a great Easter...the ham looks yummy!
