Changing Location of Powder Room Door

Below is the layout of the first floor of my house. To the right where it says "Great Room" is a 25X21 ft. great room where our family spends much of their time. I am considering moving the entrance to the powder room from in the vestibule area to the right side wall that the powder room shares with the great room. The toilet is against that wall so you would not see it with the door open. Do you think moving this door is a bad idea? It would significantly help me with my kitchen layout. Thanks so much for looking.

So you want the powder room to open into the great room? No, I would not like that at all.

So much great advice (and no judgement - thank you!) — I wanted to update, we’ve confirmed it’s only shellac! Thankfully, and we’ll be working on removing as much as possible tomorrow, with heat off and windows open. Pics below, including my husband cleaning his mess lol. Great tips on the floor - you’re points are right on, and given the work the walls will be I’d like an easier alternative for the floors for sure. The left window is actually a door that a previous owner caulked shut, but we’re planning to open and make functional again. Otherwise there isn’t much room for anything, but it would be ideal to move the sink elsewhere to have more wiggle room in the “bathroom”. We did take a quick look today at more narrow utility sink/ vanity combos, and while not perfect should be an improvement. At this point it feels that is still quite far in the future, but hopeful the shellac removal is quicker than I anticipate. Once again THANK YOU, I have been so delighted to find such a knowledgeable (and patient) community!!!

Renovating a powder room and the door opening can only be 24" wide.

Building Code Requirement: The International Residential Code is silent as to door widths and heights of interior doors. Many communities have, however, supplemented the basic code by requiring a minimum 30" door opening in most rooms, 24" for bathrooms, at least one 36" exterior door, and a minimum door height of 6'-8" (80"). For bathrooms complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the clear door opening must be 32" wide with the door fully open which usually requires a 34" wide door at minimum. 24" may be considered adequate in your area, particularly if it is a small powder room. There are many preexisting baths in my area with 24" doors, and if that is the case in your area it may be acceptable to maintain it. It's great to have a powder room door of greater width but unless the bath or powder room is accessible itself. But actually if the entire house including the exterior entry is not accessible in a path to that powder room a fully accessible powder room is kinda pointless.

I have this type of door in my guest bathroom and master bathroom as well as bedroom door. This is lamina which is a specific type of glass configuration and not just shaded glass which can show silhouettes. They are very soundproof - tested while construction was still going on outside my bedroom during remodeling. They also are completely opaque as they don't even show a shadow when the light is on. I was skeptical when my designer suggested it so I visited a showroom where they had this type of glass in their PUBLIC rest room. The door style is great because otherwise the hall would appear much "darker" with a standard wood door.

I think the general rules are that the open or community rooms decor & finishes in a home should ”flow’ from one to the other. The closed off to the public / daytime living rooms - bedrooms, master bath etc don’t need that flow. Your powder room sounds like it’s inside another room - the laundry room. How open is your laundry room to guest view? Is the laundry & powder one large room or is Powder a separate room inside laundry room? If you pass through laundry to get to powder or if powder & laundry are actually in the same room, to me, that means I’d be snazzing up my laundry room with nicer finishes etc & Powder room might share some of the colors or finishes. So, no I don’t think a white vanity in Powder room is necessarily an issue - what’s in the laundry room?

Another no. I would rather not have people walk out of the bathroom right into a gathering of people - particularly if there are 'odors' that may follow behind, kwim?

I agree with the others - I like it in its own little hallway - seperate from the FR and kitchen.

We just did a major remodel (had to move plumbing and electrical) to do the opposite of what your considering. It was not pleasant for us or guests to use a bathroom that opened to the great room. There is just something uncomfortable about walking out of a bathroom directly into a room full of people. Since we took it down to the studs, we also added soundproofing wool insulation to the walls and floor, and we used a solid core door. SO MUCH BETTER now that the door is around the corner.

All that to say, I would answer NO to your question.
