Cabela's Kidz Wrap is pretty cool. I think I might get one for my son, he'd probably love it.

I know wool military blankets, they're pretty itchy. If you really want the authentic experience, put one on an army cot. That could be the extra seating in the room, as opposed to the actual bed. The pillow should be as hard and thin as possible, LOL.

Hang up some netting, stick in some leaves, tack up B&W soldier pics, hang some dog-tags and canteens, a few "letters from home", can you tell yet that I'm an Army brat?

I had really good luck finding duvet covers at overstock.com. They come in a bunch of different solid colors. You could pick a chocolate brown or hunters green. I just put mine over the existing comforter. Then you can do your camo-pillows,mix them in with some solid ones and maybe a bright red small square one to add color. You could use your military blanket as a throw! The duvet cover comes with pillow shams also. LOL!

You're a good mom for letting him do this! It could look very cute if it's done right.

Does he want "hunting" camo or "Military" camo? They are totally different. I hate the hunting camo and wouldn't dare put it in my house but I love the Army one. Maybe I'm used to all their army clothes (I have five family members in the Army/Marines).
If you don't want to do a camo comforter, then do a solid as suggested above with pillows and maybe a rug like in the link. You can paint the walls (or at least an accent wall) in Army green. You could also buy some Military memorabilia (either ebay or at army surplus stores) to decorate the room.

Just the usual comment here about it 'matching the rest of the house'. I think kids deserve to have a room that is about them, not about the rest of the house. It should be a place that speaks to him, that is a place of refuge from the world (and his family sometimes). Who cares if the camo look doesn't match the living room - guests aren't going to be sitting in his bedroom, and you can always close the door! LOL

As a mom of 21 and 17 year old sons (one a jr. in college, one a jr. in high school) I will tell you that the next five years with him will fly, and soon enough he will be gone, and you can redecorate.

I too am one who hates hunting camo. That being said, I come from a family of men who love to hunt. We also bleed purple and gold (LSU) so I combined the two feels to give him a true Louisiana boys room with a gentleman's touch while not being trendy.

Again not sure if your talking Mossy Oak or Desert Storm, but this what I did in my son's room in our old home. I painted the room BM Woodstock Tan (a deep sort of brown). I bought a duvet and had a cover made from an army green colored cordouroy (sp) with wooden buttons for the enclosure (also had a sham made). I used RL leopard sheets on the bed with the Mossy Oak camo panels on the windows. What I didn't account for when making the duvet cover was the weight of the cordouroy (it is really heavy) nice in the winter, but I take it off in the summer and just use the white duvet. It lightens things up a bit (can get dirty if not careful). Also, I swap out the camo panels in the summer for white ones as well. The other camo accent that I had in that room was a portrait of him in camo with his gun from my father sitting on an old shotgun shell box.

His furniture is different from that you will have as his is all antique from my grandmother's, but I am sure this can be retrofitted to match your furniture.

The great thing about these colors is that they are pretty neutral so accent colors stand out well. Like the purple and gold LSU newsprints that I have matted in purple in his room and other LSU paraphanalia. Red also looks good against these colors.

All of these colors and patterns may sound a bit busy, but used properly they compliment each other really well.

We have since moved from this home, but I continue to use variations of this since it is something that works well with all ages and can grow with them.

Thanks for the JCP link. I like it. Unfortunately ds doesn't share my enthusiasm at all. Oh, and I love the idea of a cot w/ the blanket. Great ideas!

And I understand that teens especially need their own space, but I'm holding out hope that we can find something we can both live with.

ok then go Lodge style not redneck hunter style (sorry if I offended anybody's DH). Does he hunt? I hate to suggest it but you can put a fish or deer head on the wall. How about fishing poles mounted on the wall. Anything can look nice if done with style. And don't forget that it's better to have a HAPPY 13 yr old than a room that matches your house.

You mentioned Cabela's--did you know that Cabela's has camo bedding? Some of the designs aren't too "over the top."

uxorial--I've been shown Cabela's bedding several times by my son...that exact link yesterday, in fact. LOL!

I bought a Cabela's comforter set for my teenage son. We got the original "shadowgrass" pattern which is the camo pattern used in waterfowl hunting clothing. Not sure if this one is still available. I think it's a good choice and not overpowering with a lot of the more typical camo colors. I would say this has more golden tan colors.

The dust ruffle (of course not actually ruffle-y, lol) is a solid color which helps tone things down even more. I decided against curtains because I thought they would be way too much. I found a cool folk-art looking duck print to go over the bed. It all turned out pretty well.

We've had it for almost 2 years now (never took a photo!)and I finally decided to change up the look of his room for summer. To me the hunting pattern is just so fall/winter looking. I bought another comforter set recently and switched it out. Just something simple with tans and a few splashes of yellow, so nothing dramatically different. I'm going to get a surfing type print or poster to use in place of the duck. Ok, so neither waterfowl or surfing is a theme I'd choose for the rest of the house, but it's his room and I don't think it matters.

I wondered what he's say about the new stuff and was quite willing to take it back if he didn't like it. However, he's rarely home and barely noticed the switch. I'm glad I gave in and let him get what he wanted initially since now he really doesn't care about his room except as a pit stop on the way to somewhere else!

I finally found the picture of my son's room to post. This picture is from the house we lived in previously.

The house we are in now is a variation on this. When we remodel (soon I hope), it will again be another variation of this (a more modern one as his furniture will be different).

Like I said this look is something that is so easy to adapt to their age and let it evolve as they grow. I now have LSU pictures on the walls and his on sport's memorabilia from All-Star's, etc.

Anywho, I hope this gives you an idea of what you can do with camo without it being grossly overcamoed!!!!
